Experimental Study of the New Criterion of Lighting Quality Based on Analysis of Luminance Distribution at Moscow Metro Stations

The article presents the experiment in studying a new criterion of lighting quality based on spatial and angular distribution of luminance proposed by the Lighting Engineering sub-department of NIU MPEI. The experiment studies correlation between expert evaluations of lighting quality at 21 stations of the Moscow Metro with analysis based on the criterion of quality of RAW-format luminance photographs of the stations made by means of a camera and adjusted according to luminance measured by a luminance meter. The obtained photos were processed using the proposed criterion. The article presents design of station models and calculations made by means of DIALux software and the programme developed (as part of the work) on the basis of local evaluations. It is demonstrated that the proposed criterion allows us to take account of extended veiling reflections and may be considered as enhancement of the unified glare rating UGR.

The article proposes a new criterion for lighting quality that extends the existing UGR. The proposed criterion is tested in an experiment on real lighting installations - Moscow metro stations. At metro stations, the spatial-angular distribution of luminance is measured using a camera that shoots in RAW format and a luminance meter. A luminance meter is used to normalize the image to absolute luminance values. In the experiment, observers evaluate the quality of station lighting and compare the results with the calculation of a new criterion. A high correlation of the results obtained by observers and calculated using the new quality criterion is shown. For a few stations, a 3D model is built, and the criterion is calculated according to the model. The article concludes that the quality criterion is applicable to the assessment of lighting quality. Moreover, the proposed criterion can be considered an extension of the existing UGR.

Currently, programs for lighting calculation based on computer graphics (CG) allows us to move to a fundamentally new approach to a assessing the quality of lighting. A designing based on illuminance can be complement with designing based on synthetic images or on lighting design. Modern CG programs can calculate the spatial-angular distribution of luminance (SADL). However, to make the assessment of the quality of lighting using SADL a new criterion is needed. This paper considers constructing a physiological model of the visual perception scale based on experimental data and on neural network for simple scene as light source viewed on a uniform background with different luminance levels. Scale based on threshold contrasts of luminance for each sensation can be a fundament of new criterion. The article offers the method of construction the map for each sensation using the example of «discomfort» and «unpleasant» maps that can easily applied in programs.

The article has considered the calculation of the unified glare rating (UGR) based on the luminance spatial-angular distribution (LSAD). The method of local estimations of the Monte Carlo method is proposed as a method for modeling LSAD. On the basis of LSAD, it becomes possible to evaluate the quality of lighting by many criteria, including the generally accepted UGR. UGR allows preliminary assessment of the level of comfort for performing a visual task in a lighting system. A new method of "pixel-by-pixel" calculation of UGR based on LSAD is proposed.

Background: Infertility has been more common problems among couple of reproductive age. One of the factors causing this disorder is unhealthy environmental factors including exposure to cigarette smoke. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cigarette smoke can cause testicular atrophy, while the free radicals can inhibit the stages of spermatogenesis, and nicotine in cigarettes affects the brain dopamine levels affecting the levels of GnRH, and subsequently affect the levels of FSH and LH needed in spermatogenesis. The use of Mucuna pruriens seed extract containing antioxidants and L-dopa is expected to improve the quality of sperm after exposure to cigarette smoke. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of Mucuna pruriens seed extract on the sperm quality in mice exposed to cigarette smoke. Methods: This study was an experimental study with a post test only control group design. A total of 20 mice were divided into 4 groups of five mice each. All groups were exposed to cigarette smoke. Group 1 was the negative control exposed to cigarette smoke. Groups 2, 3, 4 were exposed to cigarettes smoke and given Mucuna pruriens seed extracts at the dose of 250; 300; and 350 mg/Kg BW/day. Parameters of sperm quality included concentration, morphology, motility and viability. Results: Post hoc tests showed there were significant differences among treatment groups. Conclusion: the administration of Mucuna pruriens seed extract affects the sperm quality of BALB/c mice exposed to cigarettes smoke. Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.20(4) 2021 p.768-773

Luminance measurements are used in a vast range of lighting technology fields. The author’s research has proved that measuring the luminance distribution on light source surface is the most challenging part of this process. The research has been conducted for a commercially available digital luminance distribution meter, with the goal of analyzing the influence of image focus settings and exposure parameters on the measured luminance values. It has been concluded that the incorrect image focus and inadequately matched exposure parameters (distance from the workpiece) contribute to quantitative changes in the information on luminance distribution on the LED surface and affect the precision the maximum luminance determination. Deterioration of the packing material is a major problem in cooling towers. In this experimental study ceramic tiles were used as a packing material. The packing material is a long life burnt clay, which is normally used as a roofing material. It prevents a common problem of the cooling tower resulting from corrosion and water quality of the tower. In this study, we investigate the use of three different types of ceramic packings and evaluate their heat and mass transfer coefficients. A simple comparison of packing behaviour is performed with all three types of packing materials. The experimental study was conducted in a forced draft cooling tower. The variations in many variables, which affect the tower efficiency, are described.
