Waste biomass and agro-industrial by-products, for production ethanol, will meet much of the great demand for this product. To reduce costs and optimize production, this study investigated solid-state fermentation (SSF) to obtain crude enzyme complex (CEC) from different agro-industrial biomasses (sugarcane bagasse, corn peel bran, rice straw bran and roasting and ground coffee residue) using cellulolytic fungi. The most promising CEC were evaluated in simultaneous hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) for ethanol production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a culture broth containing sugarcane bagasse treated by steam explosion, and roast and ground coffee residue. In SSF with bioreactor volume of 0.25 L, containing 40 g of the biomass mixture and 40 g of sterile water with resuspended cells (1.0 x108 spores/g of solid medium) and temperature of 30±2 ºC, the strains Trichoderma reesei and Penicilium oxalicum provided the best enzyme activity. The CEC of T. reesei provided a concentration of 7.5 g L-1 of ethanol in a substrate containing treated sugarcane bagasse (60%) and roast and ground coffee residue (40%), under SHF conditions (pH 4.5, 35±2 °C, 48 h). The results obtained in this study show a promising alternative for correct disposal and use of residues and agro-industrial by-products by use in the production of enzymes and lignocellulosic ethanol.

Platelet-activating factor (PAF), a proinflammatory lipid mediator, plays a crucial role in the formation of the atherosclerotic plaque. Therefore, the inhibition of endothelium inflammation by nutraceuticals, such as PAF inhibitors, is a promising alternative for preventing cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of a new functional yogurt enriched with PAF inhibitors of natural origin from olive oil by-products on PAF metabolism. Ninety-two apparently healthy, but mainly overweight volunteers (35–65 years) were randomly allocated into three groups by block-randomization. The activities of PAF’s biosynthetic and catabolic enzymes were measured, specifically two isoforms of acetyl-CoA:lyso-PAF acetyltransferase (LPCATs), cytidine 5′-diphospho-choline:1-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol cholinephosphotransferase (PAF-CPT) and two isoforms of platelet activating factor acetylhydrolase in leucocytes (PAF-AH) and plasma (lipoprotein associated phospholipase-A2, LpPLA2). The intake of the enriched yogurt resulted in reduced PAF-CPT and LpPLA2 activities. No difference was observed in the activities of the two isoforms of lyso PAF-AT. In conclusion, intake of yogurt enriched in PAF inhibitors could favorably modulate PAF biosynthetic and catabolic pathways.

Abstract Sugarcane bagasse waste biomass (SBWB) efficacy for the adsorption of Zr(IV) was investigated in batch and column modes. The process variables i.e. pH 1–4 (A), adsorbent dosage 0.0–0.3 g (B), and Zr(IV) ions initial concentration 25–200 mg/L (C) were studied. The experiments were run under central composite design (CCD) and data was analysed by response surface methodology (RSM) methodology. The factor A, B, C, AB interaction and square factor A2, C2 affected the Zr(IV) ions adsorption onto SBWB. The quadratic model fitted well to the adsorption data with high R2 values. The effect of bed height, flow rate and Zr(IV) ions initial concentration was also studied for column mode adsorption and efficiency was evaluated by breakthrough curves as well as Bed Depth Service and Thomas models. Bed height and Zr(IV) ions initial concentration enhanced the adsorption of capacity of Zr(IV) ions, whereas flow rate reduced the column efficiency.

The present research describes an application of high-pressure briquetting technology to the waste management of sugarcane processing in Vietnam. The amount of generated sugarcane bagasse was monitored during sugarcane processing within the street juice production in Hue city, Vietnam. Generated sugarcane bagasse was subjected to fuel parameters analysis within its suitability for direct combustion. The obtained sugarcane bagasse was converted into bio-briquette fuel by a high-pressure briquetting press and its mechanical quality was determined. Results proved that the proportion of generated sugarcane bagasse from whole sugarcane stem mass was equal to 35.45%. This indicated generation of an abundant amount of sugarcane bagasse worldwide in general. Fuel parameters analysis proved high quality level of low ash content = 0.97% and high calorific values (gross calorific value = 18.35 MJ·kg-1, net calorific value = 17.06 MJ·kg-1), which indicated good suitability for direct combustion processes. Indicators of mechanical quality proved the following observations: mechanical durability = 99.29%, compressive strength = 150.82 N∙mm-1 and bulk density = 1022.44 kg·m-3, with all these indicators representing positive results. In general, the observed results indicated suitability of sugarcane bagasse valorization within the production of bio-briquette fuel by using high-pressure briquetting technology. Finally, analysis of such waste biomass proved its great potential for energy recovery, thus, the advantage of its valorization within the sustainable technologies.

Fusarium xiangyunensis sp. nov., isolated from hot-spring waterlogged soil in China, which is an endoparasitic fungus of nematodes, is described and illustrated. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphology and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, EF-1α and RPB1 sequence data. Phylogenetic analyses showed that F. xiangyunensis clustered with those species belonging to the F. solani species complex and grouped together with F. witzenhausenense. This species differs from F. witzenhausenense in habitat (parasitic on Hibiscus sp.), conidia and chlamydospores. Furthermore, the nematicidal activity of its microconidia was determined and causes infection and death of nematodes in both sterile water and solid medium.

AbstractSingle cell oil is considered as a promising alternative to fish and vegetable oils. Due to the ability of oleaginous microorganisms to produce significant amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), single cell oil can be used for human and animal consumption. In this context, marine microorganisms of the class Labyrinthulomycetes are particularly highlighted in scientific literature. In order to clarify the possibilities for the use of microorganisms of the class Labyrinthulomycetes in large-scale single cell oil production, the first step is to gain awareness of the cultivation conditions required for these microorganisms. In addition, to reduce the cost of single cell oil production, it is necessary to identify potential agroindustrial waste products that are suitable for microbiological cultivation of Labyrinthulomycetes. This article examines the potential biotechnological applications of Labyrinthulomycetes in single cell oil production, the cultivation conditions, nutritional requirements, inhibitors and suitable waste products. In addition, an agroindustrial by-product availability analysis has been carried out. The article evaluates agroindustrial by-products based on their availability in Latvia, required pre-treatment, price, shelf life and efficiency.

In Egypt, animals suffer from under feeding and mal-nutrition due to the shortage of local produced feed which are not sufficient to cover the nutritional requirements of animals. The annually amount produced of agro-by¬products in Egypt are around 2.5 million ton of rice straw and one million ton of sugarcane bagasse. These wastes are usually burned causing environmental pollution. The potential use of these wastes in ruminant ration will participate in reducing the shortage of feedstuffs and subsequently increase milk and meat production in Egypt. Gas measuring technique has been widely used for evaluation of nutritive value particularly to estimate agro-industry by-products, different feed classes and energy value of straws. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to assess the nutritive value of rice straw, date stone, sugarcane bagasse and berseem hay using the in vitro gas production technique.
