Abstract The potential for perennial lupins to underpin grass/ legume pastures was the subject of a research programme for merino farmers in areas where more conventional legumes struggle to thrive. A previously uncultivated pasture on an acidic soil, (pH 5.0; Al = 5 mg/kg), and dominated by browntop, sweet vernal and Kentucky bluegrass, was sprayed with herbicide, burnt and top-dressed with 3 t/ha lime on half the area in the autumn prior to direct drilling on 12 Dec 2012. A blue perennial lupin and a multi-coloured (Russell) lupin were sown at 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 32 kg/ha and cocksfoot at 2 kg/ha. Yield at four months after sowing had increased with the lupin sowing rate; up to 5.5 t dry matter (DM)/ha at 32 kg seed/ha. The annual yield for the following growth season was greater than 10 t DM/ ha with little response above 8 kg lupin seed/ha. There was a small but inconsistent response to the lime by the Russell lupin. Overall, lupin contributed 79% of annual yield and >90% of the spring yield at sowing rates >8 kg/ha. The sown cocksfoot and resident grasses showed a positive lime response at the lower lupin sowing rates. Key words: Lupinus perennis, L. polyphyllus

In a greenhouse study, two Mesisols, a woody and a sedge peat, were enriched with calcitic agricultural limestone at rates of 0.5–30 t/ha to increase their pH from 3.0 to 5.8. The general fertilization included 50 ppm (20 kg/ha) of Cu (wt/wt). Maximum yields of potatoes were obtained at a soil pH of 3.4–3.6 (4–6 t lime/ha rate) but harvest index of potato tubers (mass of tubers as percent of total dry matter produced) indicated that the 10-t/ha rate would be more suitable. The Cu concentration of potato leaves and tubers did not exceed 16 ppm, and was thus less than phytotoxic level (20 or 30 ppm), even at soil pH lower than 3.4. After further addition of other fertilizers and 25 ppm of Cu, carrots gave maximum yields at the 30-t/ha rate. Copper concentrations in carrot tops and roots were below 16 ppm even at the 10-t-lime/ha rate (soil pH 3.8 or 4.0). Onions, grown after repetition of the fertilization for carrots, gave highest yield, particularly of bulbs, at the 30-t-lime/ha rate but this corresponded to an undesirably high soil pH of 5.7 or 5.8. The Cu concentration in bulbs exceeded 16 ppm only when yields were unacceptably low at the 6-t/ha and lower rates of liming. In all crops, Cu concentrations generally decreased sharply as soil pH rose above 4.0. The Ca:Mg ratio in plants usually increased with liming but, within the range observed here, did not closely parallel increases in yield. Plant concentrations of N, P and K generally decreased with liming at the highest rates (20 or 30 t/ha). Key words: Liming, peat, potatoes, onions, carrots, copper

This study deals with politeness strategies in political language. The aim of the study is to describe how Indonesian politicians realize politeness in their language. The subject was taken nine parties who have representatives. They come from different parties: Democrat, Golkar, PDIP, PKS, PPP, PKB, PAN, Gerindra and Hanura. Data were classified and verified with reference to the criteria of politeness strategies as determined by Brown & Levinson (1987); cover the bald on record strategy, positive strategy, negative strategy and off-record strategy. The finding show that there were four types of politeness strategies used by Politicians in different of types of illocutionary acts; positive strategy, bald on record strategy, negative strategy, and off-record strategy. The most dominant type of politeness strategies used was positive strategy. The most dominant type was due to fact that speakers in interaction try to get closer the hearers. They use the group identity marker in addressing someone so there is no distance relationship between the speaker and hearer. They also gave the reasons when they speak in order to satisfy the hearer. Key words: politician; political language; politeness strategy

Palabras clave: educación, valores, fuente de valores, integración, cultura EDUCATION AND VALUES ABSTRACT The article offers a reflection on education and values. After a reference to the different senses in which one can pose the problem in terms of how you can understand the relationship between the two nouns “education” and “values”, reflection focuses on some problems related to the values in the contents of education. First, it concerns the problem of the criterion against which to determine the values of education, concluding that the criterion could be neither a priori in nature, not empirical, but “synthetic”. Herein, the problem of principle is faced, the source of values, or the realization of the criterion of the values of education, understanding that these should be determined from the subject of education. It concludes with the reference of a requirement of the values in education, setting up a unitary and interactive whole. Key Words: education, values , power values , integration, culture

Whole barley was treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in laboratory trials. Dry matter disappearance from nylon bags in the rumen of whole barley treated with 2.5, 3.5, or 4.9% NaOH for 30 h was 59.6, 72.4, and 93.0%, respectively, compared with 82.2% for untreated ground barley. In a subsequent lactation trial, 24 Holstein cows (eight per treatment) were fed high moisture ground ear corn, high moisture rolled barley or high moisture whole barley treated with 3.5% NaOH. Milk persistencies tended to be greater for cows fed high moisture rolled barley, next for ground ear corn and least for NaOH-treated barley. Milk composition was similar for all treatments. Dry matter intake was greatest for cows fed ground ear corn and lower for those fed the barley diets. Alpha-linked glucose and pH of feces were similar for cows fed ground ear corn and high moisture rolled barley diets, but fecal pH was lower and alpha-linked glucose concentrations three times greater for NaOH-treated barley. Digestibility percents of dry matter, acid detergent fiber and nitrogen were 61.4, 25.3, 64.7 for ground ear corn; 64.4, 38.0, 67.1 for high moisture rolled barley; and 56.8, 43.2, 54.8 for NaOH-treated barley, respectively. Rumen grain turnover estimated by excretion of ytterbium in feces was greatest for NaOH-treated barley (9.09%/h), intermediate for ground ear corn (6.10%/h) and lowest for high moisture rolled barley (4.93%/h). Key words: Dairy, sodium hydroxide, high moisture grains

Forest soil pH in southwest Finland was measured with identical sampling and analysing methods in 1970 and 1989. The acidity of the organic humus layer increased significantly as pH values measured on water and on salt suspensions decreased between the two sampling dates. For the mineral soil layers, no unambiguous trend was found. pH values measured on salt suspension tended to be unchanged or lower, while pH on water suspension in some soil layers were even higher in 1989 than in 1970. Key words: pH, repeated sampling

Five timothy (Phleum pratense L.) cultivars, Clair, Champ, Milton, Climax and Bounty, were harvested at first flower stage during 2 consecutive years and in the regrowth for 1 yr. The forages were each offered as hay to 15 young rams to evaluate voluntary intake. Five animals were used to determine initial harvest dry matter digestibility. The cultivars varied significantly in voluntary intake at first flower stage. The highest intake (g kg−0.75 d−1) averaged for the years was obtained in the early cultivar Champ (65.9), which was 10% more than that of the medium-late cultivar Climax. The cultivars did not differ significantly in dry matter digestibility. In the regrowth, the relative intakes of the cultivars were essentially reversed from that of the initial harvest. The voluntary intake was substantially higher but the differences among forages were less marked. Climax regrowth voluntary intake was higher (P < 0.05) than all cultivars, except Bounty. A 15% range in digestible dry matter intake was present among cultivars. The ranking of the culivars for digestible dry matter was different than for dry matter yield. Key words: Timothy, Phleum pratense L., voluntary intake, dry matter digestibility

The article examines the concept and basis of responsibility in international sea freight. The relations arising in international cargo transportation by sea have a direct impact on the subject area of the institution of responsibility in this area. First of all (prima facie), the carrier and the consignor have mutual rights and obligations. However, the legal relationship between the consignee and the consignor also affects the legal relationship with the carrier, and the carrier acts as the main subject of the relevant liability. Accompanying the guilty and innocent carrier in international cargo transportation by sea is the responsibility. In both cases, the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan contains appropriate forms of liability. However, there is a need in the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan to bring absolute or objective responsibility in line with international law. In particular, the liability provisions of the legislation on sea freight must include an "institution of liability", formed in accordance with the "immunity catalog" or "exclusion catalog". In this case, the carrier is absolutely responsible for everything that does not belong to the "immunity catalog", and the problem of liability for guilt is not the subject of discussion. Key words: conosament, liability, international carriage, carriage of goods by sea, Hamburg rules, legislation, conventions norms, Rotterdam Rules, law
