Three pure swards of subterranean clover were either (a) left ungrazed with a leaf area index (LAI) of 4.6, or (b) continuously grazed leniently to leave 1 600 kg DM/ha herbage mass equivalent to an LAI of 1.0, or (c) hard grazed to leave 1 400 kg DM/ha herbage mass equivalent to an LAI of 0.6 throughout the flowering period. These swards yielded 1 250, 320 and 70 kg/ha of seed, respectively. One intensive sampling during the middle of flowering showed that seed yield was positively correlated with plant weight, leaf area per plant, and area per leaf, specific leaf area and leaf area ratio. Grazing reduced numbers of both inflorescences and burrs and hence seed yield. Whilst reduced leaf area and plant weight may have also been partly responsible, under hard grazing, only 58% of potential reproductive sites were occupied which suggests that grazing animals also reduced seed yield by consuming these. It is recommended that continuous grazing during flowering and seed maturation should be controlled to leave at least 1 600 kg DM/ha of residual herbage mass, equivalent to an LAI of 1.0, if adequate seed is to be produced to be ensure the establishment of a high producing sward in the following growing season. Seed production and persistence of the Carnamah, Northam A, Dwalganup, and Geraldton strains of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) were examined in undefoliated swards in the wheatbelt of Western Australia. The early flowering characteristic of Carnamah was not always associated with higher seed yields. Only when there was a well-defined, early finish to the growing season, or when flowering was very much earlier in Carnamah (viz., following an early 'break' to the season), did this strain clearly outyield both Northam A and Geraldton. The seed yield of Dwalganup was generally inferior to that of the other strains. Factors affecting regeneration are discussed. Under low rainfall conditions, poorer germination-regulation of Carnamah, compared with Geraldton and Northam A, would be expected to result in poorer persistence unless offset by higher seed yields in the Carnamah strain.

The significance of seed weight in the growth of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L) , of the Bacchus Marsh strain, has been assessed under both spaced plant and sward conditions at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute. Under conditions of spacing, plants of three widely separated seed size grades were grown a t a density of 1 per 25 sq. links. The dry weights of the plants were proportional to seed weight from the time of sowing (in May) till the end of October – over almost the entire growing period of the crop. Three sets of swards were grown a t a density of 25 plants per sq. link, each sward being planted with seed of one of the three sizes. Dry weight was proportional to seed weight in the early part of the season but when the swards reached a leaf area index of about 4 (i.e. when there were 4 sq. links of leaf surface on 1 sq. link of ground), a reduction in growth rate occurred. This critical leaf area index was reached first in "large seed" swards, followed later by "medium seed" and finally by "small seed" swards. Thus there was a period in which the swards were growing at different rates, and in which the dry weights came to parity, so that on the final sampling occasion (in December) there was no significant difference between the dry weights of the swards from the three seed sizes. It is concluded that a t a leaf area index of about 4, interception of incident light energy is complete.

A bxn gene, coding for the nitilase enzyme that catalyses the detoxification of the herbicide bromoxynil, was inserted into subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L. subsp. yanninicum). The agronomic characteristics of 3 transgenic lines (BXN 5, 7, 10) and their response to herbicides containing bromoxynil, were compared with that of the non-transgenic parent, cv. Gosse, in 1 glasshouse and 2 field experiments.The application of bromoxynil at 1.5 L/ha resulted in a 50% reduction in the spring herbage yield of the non-transgenic control but no reduction in BXN 5 and 7. The level of the phyto-oestrogens, genistein and biochanin A, in the leaf tissue were low in Gosse and the 2 transgenic lines, BXN 7 and 10, but the level of genistein increased significantly (P < 0.05) from 0.85% in Gosse to 1.43% dry weight in BXN 5, and biochanin A increased from 0.35% in Gosse to 0.73% in BXN 5. The application of the herbicides bromoxynil, bromoxynil+MCPA, and Jaguar (bromoxynil+diflufenican) at the cotyledon stage in a glasshouse study significantly reduced the leaf area of the non-transgenic Gosse, but did not reduce the leaf area of the 3 transgenic lines. When applied at the 4–5 leaf stage, the leaf area of Gosse was again reduced by all the herbicides, but only the bromoxynil+MCPA treatment reduced the leaf area of the transgenic lines relative to the control. The application of bromoxynil or Jaguar at the 4–5 leaf stage depressed the herbage yield of Gosse by about 62% compared with 0–24% in the 3 transgenic lines. In the field studies, BXN 5 and 10 had similar seed yields to Gosse in the absence of herbicide application, but the seed yield of BXN 7 was significantly less than the other 2 transgenic lines. The level of hard-seed in BXN 7 was also lower at 25% compared with 55–57% in the other transgenic lines and Gosse.These findings stress the need to carefully assess the agronomic qualities of transgenic lines prior to release as although tolerance to bromoxynil may be greatly increased by the bxn gene, other important agronomic characteristics, such as seed yield, hardseededness, and isoflavone content, may change as result of the gene or transformation process.

An experiment was conducted in a glasshouse to study the effects of withholding water during flowering on seed production in subterranean clover. Two strains, Northam A (long duration of flowering) and Geraldton (shorter duration) were grown as swards in boxes, defoliated weekly until flowering, and subjected to the following watering regimes: T1, a control; T2, water withheld over the whole of the flowering period; T3 and T4, water withheld for short periods only, during flowering. Regular determinations were made of soil water, leaf water potential and inflorescence number. Seed yield and some of its components were measured in all treatments. The prolonged stress (T2) reduced seed yield by about 80% in both strains. Rates of inflorescence production, duration of flowering and individual seed weight were also reduced. The shorter stress treatments (T3, T4) had no effect on seed yield in the longer-flowering cultivar Northam A, but in cv. Geraldton, T4 caused a marked reduction in seed yield. The practical implications of this differential strain response are discussed.

ABSTRACT Cassava wastewater is the liquid residue of the cassava flour processing and its application to the soil as fertilizer for agricultural crops is a good alternative to sources of nutrients for plants. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and seed yield of sunflower on soil fertilized with cassava wastewater. A randomized block experimental design with four replications was used, with six cassava wastewater rates (0, 8.5, 17, 34, 68 and 136 m3 ha-1) and six plant sampling times (15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after sowing), using the sunflower cultivar Helio-250. The evaluated variables were total leaf area, leaf area index, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, leaf weight ratio, shoot dry mass and sunflower seed yield. The use of cassava wastewater rate of 136 m3 ha-1 increases the seed yield, leaf area, leaf area index and shoot dry mass, and results in lower leaf area ratio, specific leaf area and leaf weight ratio of sunflower (cv. Helio-250) crops.

A study was made of the development and fate of individual plants growing from contrasting seed sizes in swards of subterranean clover (var. Bacchus Marsh). Three sets of swards were grown in boxes, from large, small, and mixed (large and small) seeds respectively, all sown at the same number of plants per unit area; the swards were harvested on five occasions. Leaf area in each 2 cm layer of the sward was determined separately and measurements of the light intensity reaching each layer were obtained at each harvest. Counts of the plants on each occasion revealed a steady drop of about 30 per cent. over the whole period; in the "mixed" swards, only plants from small seed sizes died, the number of large-seeded plants remaining unchanged. The data of leaf area and numbers in each layer showed that leaf area is concentrated in a relatively shallow band at the top of the sward, the area attained by individual leaves increasing with height in the sward and with time. Leaves are not retained in the canopy at heights below that at which light extinction occurs. An unexpected finding was that, as the sward developed, the leaf area index (the ratio of leaf area to ground covered) required for the absorption of all incident light energy increases, and it is suggested that this is due to changes in leaf morphology. The importance of the position at which leaves of individual plants are held in the canopy is stressed; although at the first sampling occasion, the small-seeded plants had 25 per cent. of the leaf area of the mixed sward, they were so located as to absorb only 10 per cent. of the incident light energy; at the last sampling occasion, the values were 10 and 2 per cent. respectively. It is concluded that the disappearance of the small-seeded plants from the mixed swards was due to shading from the large-seeded plants.

AbstractSeveral biotic and abiotic stresses significantly decrease the biomass accumulation and seed yield of sesame crops under rainfed areas. However, plant growth regulators (such as Paclobutrazol) can improve the total dry matter and seed production of the sesame crop. The effects of the paclobutrazol application on dry matter accumulation and seed yield had not been studied before in sesame under rainfed conditions. Therefore, a two-year field study during 2018 and 2019 was conducted with key objectives to assess the impacts of paclobutrazol on leaf greenness, leaf area, total dry matter production and partitioning, seed shattering, and seed yield of sesame. Two sesame cultivars (TS-5 and TS-3) were treated with four paclobutrazol concentrations (P0 = Control, P1 = 100 mg L−1, P2 = 200 mg L−1, P3 = 300 mg L−1). The experiment was executed in RCBD-factorial design with three replications. Compared with P0, treatment P3 improved the leaf greenness of sesame by 17%, 38%, and 60% at 45, 85, and 125 days after sowing, respectively. However, P3 treatment decreased the leaf area of sesame by 14% and 20% at 45 and 85 days after sowing than P0, respectively. Compared with P0, treatment P3 increased the leaf area by 46% at 125 days after sowing. On average, treatment P3 also improved the total biomass production by 21% and partitioning in roots, stems, leaves, capsules, and seeds by 23%, 19%, 23%, 22%, and 40%, respectively, in the whole growing seasons as compared to P0. Moreover, under P3 treatment, sesame attained the highest seed yield and lowest seed shattering by 27% and 30%, respectively, compared to P0. This study indicated that by applying the paclobutrazol concentration at the rate of 300 mg L−1 in sesame, the leaf greenness, leaf areas, biomass accumulation, partitioning, seed yield, and shatter resistance could be improved. Thus, the optimum paclobutrazol level could enhance the dry matter accumulation and seed production capacity of sesame by decreasing shattering losses under rainfed conditions.

Changes in the pre-emergence distribution of dry matter in subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) variety Bacchus Marsh were followed at 21°C, using three sizes of seed and three depths of sowing, ½, 1¼, and 2 in. Decreasing seed size and increasing depth of sowing both reduce the weight of the cotyledons a t emergence. Seed of the three sizes were sown a t three depths in pot culture a t staggered intervals so that emergence was simultaneous. Dry weight in the early vegetative stage was proportional to seed size, and total leaf area and leaf numbers showed similar trends. Plants of each seed size grew at the same relative rate. No effect of depth of sowing could be detected, and this was shown to be due to the cotyledon area a t emergence being constant for any given seed size, regardless of varying depth of sowing and hence of cotyledon weight. It was concluded that seed size in a plant having epigeal germination and without endosperm is of importance: firstly, in limiting the maximum hypocotyl elongation and hence depth of sowing, and secondly, in determining cotyledon area. Cotyledon area in turn influences seedling growth, which is not affected by cotyledon weight. Once emergence has taken place, cotyledonary reserves are of no further significance in the growth of the plants.

Research was carried out on onion landrace (Ramata di Montoro) for seed production in southern Italy, with the aim to evaluate the effects on yield and quality of four bulb planting times in factorial combination with four densities, using a split plot design with three replicates. The number of flower stalks per plant, their height and diameter, and the inflorescence diameter decreased with the bulb planting delay and density increase. The highest plant leaf area and LAI (leaf area index), seed yield, number, and mean weight were recorded with the earliest planting time, with the lowest bulb density eliciting the highest plant leaf area but the lowest LAI and seed yield per hectare. The ratio between seeds and inflorescence weight, and seed germinability, decreased with the planting delay and density increase. Seed oil, protein, and antioxidant content (polyphenols and selenium) were highest with the last crop cycle. The polyunsaturated fatty acids, predominant in oil, increased with planting time delay, whereas the monounsaturated fatty acids decreased. Linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acid prevailed among polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and saturated fatty acids, respectively. Planting from 20 December to 10 January with 3.3 cold-stored bulbs per m2 was the most effective combination in terms of seed yield per hectare, whereas seed oil content and quality were the best, with the last crop cycle starting on 21 February, independent of bulb density.

Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) is Australia’s most widely sown annual pasture legume. Its widespread use as a pasture plant requires a well-functioning seed production industry, and Australia is the only significant producer of subterranean clover seed globally. However, the sustainability of this industry is under threat due to its reliance on ageing harvest equipment and the resultant environmental impacts. In order to evaluate seed harvesting practices, technology, and issues, we report on case studies, workshops, and a survey of seed producers across southern Australia. The Horwood Bagshaw Clover Harvester, designed in the 1950s, remains the most popular subterranean clover seed harvester. We discuss its use and modifications, and document several contemporary issues facing the seed production industry. Issues are primarily soil erosion and degradation; the expensive, slow and labour-intensive harvest process; and poor reliability and maintainability of harvesters that are now at least 30 years old. We conclude the root cause of these issues is the suction harvest technology utilised by the Horwood Bagshaw Clover Harvester. Analysis of the current harvest system is provided to support the development of new approaches to harvest subterranean clover seeds.
