Successful ASR Prevention in Germany: Influencing Factors and Adequate Measures

Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) in concrete pavements has become a real problem in Germany in the end of the 1990s / beginning of the 2000s. In an extensive research project, the background for such ASR-damaging has been examined intensively at the Ruhr University Bochum. ASR in concrete pavements is not only influenced by the reactivity of the aggregate, but rather by a superposition of different influencing factors. For concrete pavements for example, there are specific conditions that increase an ASR significantly. On the one hand, concrete pavements are microstructurally damaged by the superposition of cyclic stresses induced by traffic and climate changes, and on the other hand they are exposed to alkaline de-icing agents during the wintertime. Thereby, an ASR-promoting external alkali supply is given. Three absolute preconditions are necessary for an ASR to occur: potentially reactive aggregates, sufficient supply of alkalis and an adequate degree of moisture. In Germany, there have been numerous measures taken in the last 10 to 15 years in order to prevent ASR-damages in concrete pavements. Already in 2005 the alkali-content (Na₂O-Equivalent) allowed in cements for concrete pavements has been limited to 0.8% by mass. Additionally, in each case the aggregates intended to be used must be assessed beforehand in a special procedure. Since these requirements were established by the highway-authorities in 2005 (with modifications in 2013) there have been no new damages related to ASR observed on concrete pavements, which have been constructed in compliance with these guidelines.

Coral reefs are highly productive marine ecosystems that harborahigh biodiversity. The forming organisms of these reefs are the scleractinian corals, which form symbiotic interactions with multiple microorganisms. One of the best known symbiotic interactions in these systems is the one established with the microalgae Symbiodinium. The microalgae produce through photosynthesis up to 90% of the energy required by the coral. On the other hand, Symbiodiniumreceives from the coral an appropriate niche, that protects Symbiodiniumfrom the external environment, from the competition with other organisms and predation; it also provides abundant nutrients produced by other coral symbiontshighlighting the bacteria. As well as this, multiple symbiotic interactions confer metabolic capabilities to corals, which have enabled their capacity to adapt to climate changes for millions of years. However, in recent decades coral reef ecosystems are being extensively decimated. Given the new characteristics of an environment with significant changes sometimes somewhat erratic, probably the interactions that initially provided ecological advantages to corals are no longer sufficient to overcome environmental adversities or that as a result of the changes generated in the environment. The diversity of microorganisms capable of interactions that can be formed with the few remaining microorganisms do not confer to the coral, sufficient adaptative advantages to face the challenge of climate change. In this essay, we argue about the possibility that a decrease in the stock of microorganisms capable of interacting with corals, as a result of marine pollution, is a cause of the loss of biological aptitude of corals to survive in the current global climate change.

The authors investigate the features of reforming the succession law in Russia and the European Union. It was revealed that: (1) the topic of cross-border succession  is becoming increasingly important in Europe, given that substantive laws in EU Member States vary significantly with respect to the form of will, the admissibility of succession  agreements, the rules of calling for inheritance, etc.; (2) these problems should have been adopted by Regulation No. 650/2012 on succession  adopted on July 4, 2012, which has been applied in all EU member states since August 17, 2015; (3) The Regulation introduced the European Certificate of Succession (ECS) - a document that must be recognized in all member states without any special procedure; (4) on the one hand, ECS has simplified the procedure for accepting and registering an inheritance; on the other hand, problems have been identified that arise as a result of applying the laws of individual states; (5) the reform of the Russian legislation on inheritance, which took place in 2017-2019, was aimed at ensuring the interests of heirs by introducing such institutions as: succession fund, succession agreement, joint testament of spouses; which made it possible to conclude that Russian legislation is increasingly intensively keeping up with the times and becoming more flexible in terms of inheritance.

Within the legal regime of climate protection, there is a gap between the amount of space and resources devoted to mitigation on the one hand and adaptation to climate changes on the other, clearly to the detriment of the latter. Nevertheless, at least some climate changes seem inevitable and therefore it is certainly necessary to take some adaptation measures. That is especially true in the case of the energy sector, which plays a crucial role in the entire economy. The article deals with legal instruments aimed at adapting the energy sector to climate change. It analyses the general legislative approach to adaptation, the expected negative consequences of climate changes for the energy sector, as well as the current legal regulations in this matter – in order to conclude as to the legal instruments that could be useful for the adaptation of the energy sector to climate changes.

Girth welds of hydro-carbon transporting pipelines play important role of the life and the lifetime, during both the construction and the operation. In consideration of the huge number of girth welds, the highlighted attention to those is worthy and necessary. The aims of the article are twofold: on the one hand, collecting the influencing factors on the failures of girth welds; on the other hand, answering the question assumed in the title of the article: how to prevent damages of transporting pipeline girth welds? The answers build upon the demonstrated influencing factors, using examples, and systematically respond to those.

The first question to be answered, in seeking coordinate systems for geodynamics, is: what is geodynamics? The answer is, of course, that geodynamics is that part of geophysics which is concerned with movements of the Earth, as opposed to geostatics which is the physics of the stationary Earth. But as far as we know, there is no stationary Earth – epur sic monere. So geodynamics is actually coextensive with geophysics, and coordinate systems suitable for the one should be suitable for the other. At the present time, there are not many coordinate systems, if any, that can be identified with a static Earth. Certainly the only coordinate of aeronomic (atmospheric) interest is the height, and this is usually either as geodynamic height or as pressure. In oceanology, the most important coordinate is depth, and this, like heights in the atmosphere, is expressed as metric depth from mean sea level, as geodynamic depth, or as pressure. Only for the earth do we find “static” systems in use, ana even here there is real question as to whether the systems are dynamic or static. So it would seem that our answer to the question, of what kind, of coordinate systems are we seeking, must be that we are looking for the same systems as are used in geophysics, and these systems are dynamic in nature already – that is, their definition involvestime.

Abstract. Two experiments examined the influence of stories on recipients’ self-perceptions. Extending prior theory and research, our focus was on assimilation effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in line with a protagonist’s traits) as well as on contrast effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in contrast to a protagonist’s traits). In Experiment 1 ( N = 113), implicit and explicit conscientiousness were assessed after participants read a story about either a diligent or a negligent student. Moderation analyses showed that highly transported participants and participants with lower counterarguing scores assimilate the depicted traits of a story protagonist, as indicated by explicit, self-reported conscientiousness ratings. Participants, who were more critical toward a story (i.e., higher counterarguing) and with a lower degree of transportation, showed contrast effects. In Experiment 2 ( N = 103), we manipulated transportation and counterarguing, but we could not identify an effect on participants’ self-ascribed level of conscientiousness. A mini meta-analysis across both experiments revealed significant positive overall associations between transportation and counterarguing on the one hand and story-consistent self-reported conscientiousness on the other hand.

SummaryThe prognosis of patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) has improved considerably by introduction of aggressive consolidation chemotherapy and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Nevertheless, only 20-30% of patients with AML achieve long-term diseasefree survival after SCT. The most common cause of treatment failure is relapse. Additionally, mortality rates are significantly increased by therapy-related causes such as toxicity of chemotherapy and complications of SCT. Including radioimmunotherapies in the treatment of AML and myelodyplastic syndrome (MDS) allows for the achievement of a pronounced antileukaemic effect for the reduction of relapse rates on the one hand. On the other hand, no increase of acute toxicity and later complications should be induced. These effects are important for the primary reduction of tumour cells as well as for the myeloablative conditioning before SCT.This paper provides a systematic and critical review of the currently used radionuclides and immunoconjugates for the treatment of AML and MDS and summarizes the literature on primary tumour cell reductive radioimmunotherapies on the one hand and conditioning radioimmunotherapies before SCT on the other hand.

In recent years, political and social conditions have changed dramatically. Many analyses help to capture these dynamics. However, they produce political pessimism: on the one hand there is the image of regression and on the other, a direct link is made between socio-economic decline and the rise of the far-right. To counter these aspects, this article argues that current political events are to be understood less as ‘regression’ but rather as a moment of movement and the return of deep political struggles. Referring to Jacques Ranciere’s political thought, the current conditions can be captured as the ‘end of post-democracy’. This approach changes the perspective on current social dynamics in a productive way. It allows for an emphasis on movement and the recognition of the windows of opportunity for emancipatory struggles.

Two aspects of Schumpeter' legacy are analyzed in the article. On the one hand, he can be viewed as the custodian of the neoclassical harvest supplementing to its stock of inherited knowledge. On the other hand, the innovative character of his works is emphasized that allows to consider him a proponent of hetherodoxy. It is stressed that Schumpeter's revolutionary challenge can lead to radical changes in modern economics.
