The choroid plexus epithelium constitutes a blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier, and is involved in regulation of the special composition of the CSF. The epithelium is provided with an ouabain-sensitive Na/K-pump located at the apical surface, actively pumping ions into the CSF. The choroid plexus epithelium has been described as “leaky” with a low transepithelial resistance, and a passive transepithelial flux following a paracellular route (intercellular spaces and cell junctions) also takes place. The present report describes the structural basis for these “barrier” properties of the choroid plexus epithelium as revealed by freeze fracture.Choroid plexus from the lateral, third and fourth ventricles of rats were used. The tissue was fixed in glutaraldehyde and stored in 30% glycerol. Freezing was performed either in liquid nitrogen-cooled Freon 22, or directly in a mixture of liquid and solid nitrogen prepared in a special vacuum chamber. The latter method was always used, and considered necessary, when preparations of complementary (double) replicas were made.

Considerable interest has been generated in solid state reactions between thin films of near noble metals and silicon. These metals deposited on Si form numerous stable chemical compounds at low temperatures and have found applications as Schottky barrier contacts to silicon in VLSI devices. Since the very first phase that nucleates in contact with Si determines the barrier properties, the purpose of our study was to investigate the silicide formation of the near noble metals, Pd and Pt, at very thin thickness of the metal films on amorphous silicon.Films of Pd and Pt in the thickness range of 0.5nm to 20nm were made by room temperature evaporation on 40nm thick amorphous Si films, which were first deposited on 30nm thick amorphous Si3N4 membranes in a window configuration. The deposition rate was 0.1 to 0.5nm/sec and the pressure during deposition was 3 x 10 -7 Torr. The samples were annealed at temperatures in the range from 200° to 650°C in a furnace with helium purified by hot (950°C) Ti particles. Transmission electron microscopy and diffraction techniques were used to evaluate changes in structure and morphology of the phases formed as a function of metal thickness and annealing temperature.

Keratinocytes undergo maturation during their transit through the viable layers of skin, and then abruptly transform into flattened, anuclear corneocytes that constitute the cellular component of the skin barrier, the stratum corneum (SC). The SC is generally considered to be homogeneous in its structure and barrier properties, and is often shown schematically as a featureless brick wall, the “bricks” being the corneocytes, the “mortar” being intercellular lipid. Previously we showed the outer SC was not homogeneous in its composition, but contained steep gradients of the physiological inorganic elements Na, K and Cl, likely originating from sweat salts. Here we show the innermost corneocytes in human skin are also heterogeneous in composition, undergoing systematic changes in intracellular element concentration during transit into the interior of the SC.Human skin biopsies were taken from the lower leg of individuals with both “good” and “dry” skin and plunge-frozen in a stirred, cooled isopentane/propane mixture.

AbstractIn this work, we report the effects of nitrogen on electrical and structural properties in TaSixNy /SiO2/p-Si MOS capacitors. TaSixNy films with various compositions were deposited by reactive sputtering of TaSi2 or by co-sputtering of Ta and Si targets in argon and nitrogen ambient. TaSixNy films were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. It was found that the workfunction of TaSixNy (Si>Ta) with varying N contents ranges from 4.2 to 4.3 eV. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy shows no indication of interfacial reaction or crystallization in TaSixNy on SiO2, resulting in no significant increase of leakage current in the capacitor during annealing. It is believed that nitrogen retards reaction rates and improves the chemical-thermal stability of the gate-dielectric interface and oxygen diffusion barrier properties.

м.н. Каливраджияна Э.С. The development of technologies based on the use of low-toxic materials will make it possible to begin their application in medicine in the near future. The use of nanoparticles of silver, copper, silicon, zinc, titanium, cobalt as a modifying additive will make it possible to actively influence the structure of the starting materials and change their properties, namely, improve the physicomechanical, physicochemical and toxicohygienic properties of materials. Nanosized silicon particles introduced into fixing dental materials lead to an improvement in the physicochemical, physicomechanical properties of crystallizing materials, and the low thermal conductivity of silicon can increase its working time and reduce heat generation during the crystallization reaction. Since the volume of manipulations depends on these characteristics, when fixing orthopedic structures on abutment teeth, it would be advisable to bring the working time of hardening to a pure hardening time, which will increase the volume of manipulations with the prepared mass without deteriorating its properties. The development of high-strength, biocompatible, high-tech nanoplastics for the bases of removable plate prostheses is an urgent problem to improve the quality of life of patients. Modification of acrylic polymer with nano-sized particles of silver and silicon will improve such physical and mechanical properties as impact strength, strength, temperature resistance, barrier properties, and reduce polymer shrinkage at the stage of polymerization, in contrast to the already known domestic and expensive imported polymers. Nanosized particles of silicon, silver are cocatalysts of methyl methacrylate, affecting the reduction of the amount of residual monomer after the polymerization process, thereby increasing the sanitary-chemical and toxic-hygienic characteristics of the polymer. All of the above made it possible to formulate the goal of research on nanostructured materials under the guidance of the professor …dedicated to the memory of the professor, d.m.s. The physical, thermal, mechanical, optical, microstructural, and barrier properties of low-density polyethylene films (LDPE) containing ferula asafoetida leaf and gum extracts were investigated. Results showed a reduction in elasticity and tensile strength with increasing extract concentration in the polymer matrix. The melting temperature and enthalpy increased with increasing concentration of extracts. The films containing extracts had lower L∗ and a∗ and higher b∗ indices. The films containing leaf extract had more barrier potential to UV than the gum extracts. The oxygen permeability in films containing 5% of leaf and gum extracts increased by 2.3 and 2.1 times, respectively. The morphology of the active films was similar to bubble swollen islands, which was more pronounced at higher concentrations of gum and leaf extracts. FTIR results confirmed some chemical interactions of ferula extracts with the polymer matrix. At the end of day 14th, the growth rate of Aspergillus niger and Saccharomyces cerevisea in the presence of the PE-Gum-5 reduced more than PE-Leaf-5 (3.7 and 2.4 logarithmic cycles, respectively) compared to the first day. Our findings showed that active LDPE films have desire thermo-mechanical and barrier properties for food packaging.

This study designed and synthesised a meta-amide-substituted dianiline monomer (m-DABA) as a stereoisomer of DABA, a previously investigated para-amide-substituted dianiline monomer. This new monomer was polymerised with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) to prepare a polyimide film (m-DABPI) in a process similar to that employed in a previous study. The relationship between the substitution positions on the monomer and the gas barrier properties of the polyimide film was investigated via molecular simulation, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD), and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to gain deeper insights into the gas barrier mechanism. The results showed that compared with the para-substituted DABPI, the m-DABPI exhibited better gas barrier properties, with a water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) and an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) as low as 2.8 g·m−2·d−1 and 3.3 cm3·m−2·d−1, respectively. This was because the meta-linked polyimide molecular chains were more tightly packed, leading to a smaller free volume and lower molecular chain mobility. These properties are not conducive to the permeation of small molecules into the film; thus, the gas barrier properties were improved. The findings have significant implications for the structural design of high-barrier materials and could promote the development of flexible display technology.
