The paper analyzes the poetics of Ivan Franko’s story “Poluika” — the work that was included in the second thematic collection on the oil industry of Boryslav named “‘Poluika’ and other stories about Boryslav” (Lviv, 1899). The researcher focuses on the modern, in particular impressionistic, principles of displaying the working and industrial environment. The narration is performed through the life story of an old oilman who, being at the end of his life, recalls a custom of ‘poluika’, which existed among Boryslav oilmen thirty years ago. The new elements of “Poluika” poetics help in the deeper revealing of the inner world of a character, his values, and psychology. The story shows a number of new changes at the level of formal features of poetics. It presents still unknown aspects of Boryslav life and reflects the eloquent features of the modernistic type of I. Franko’s creative work. The story is based on retrospection of the events that happened thirty years ago, and this approach also makes its plot and composition peculiar. The origin, primary meaning, and expressive content of the word “poluika”, used as a title, have been clarified. The industrial landscape wasn’t new in contemporary literature but the writer tended to use it in an innovative way. The workers presented by Franko gain such new features as social, moral, and professional maturity. The researcher also pays attention to the peculiarities of applying the first-person form of narration tested by Ivan Franko in his works from 1870―1880. In general, “Poluika” has the genre features of a story but the structure of the work also reveals evident elements of a short story. Thus, the genre of “Poluika” is defined as a short story of social psychological content.

The paper attempts to perform philological commenting on one of the most well-known Leonid Andreev’s short stories "Petka at the Dacha". Linguostylistic analysis enabled the author to discuss the specific features of the images of time, space and the characters in their language representation. The system of the conceptual oppositions "non-childhood – childhood", "dirty – clean", "gloomy – light", "dead – alive", "slow – fast", "ignorance – awareness", "existence – life" is the centrepiece of the inner text composition. The description of the boy’s behaviour, his relationships with those around him and the changes in his inner world creates the basic opposition of the two spheres in the protagonist’s life – "childhood" versus "non-childhood". Shifting viewpoints, subjectivation of the author’s speech and the use of imperfect predicates are important for the narrative structure organisation. Studying the key images of the work and comparing the elements which comprise its circular plot structure (the introduction and ending) allow the author to conclude that the ending strikes an optimistic note and generates a life-asserting pathos.

Research on Strindberg's short story “Ett halvt ark papper” has ascribed a therapeutic effect to the protagonist's memorialization of the past two years of his life. In this view, the story ends happily, as the narrator tells us. In contrast, the aim of this article is to show the narrator's unreliability. He not only fits together the puzzle pieces of the protagonist's life story into a coherent narration, but he also wants to meet the demands of the genre “Fairytale”, which is the title of the book containing “Ett halvt ark papper”. A coherent narration, however, can only be obtained by neglecting the uncertainties of the protagonist's life. Nobody knows what exactly happened to him. What seems to be his memories is in fact the constructed memorialization of the narrator. Additionally, there are strong textual signs indicating an ironic attitude of the narrator towards H.C. Andersen's fairytales and his “fairytale sound”. Does this mean that it is the narrator's goal to make a fairytale out of the protagonist's tragic fate?

This paper aims to analyze the transitivity patterns used in one of the most prominent short stories in Philippine Contemporary Literature “The Wedding Dance” which was written by a renowned writer Amador T. Daguio. This study is based on Halliday’s framework of transitivity analysis to delve on the meaning of the story in the literary discourse. This paper used the simple random sampling among the short stories in the Grade 7 English Learning Material from the Department of Education. In addition, the story is divided into three parts according to the number of sentences. Subsequently, part of the story has been identified and selected as basis for the analysis through random selection process. Furthermore, the paper used all 15 sentences from the first portion of the short story to be analyzed and interpreted using the functional stylistics. Analyzing and interpreting a portion of the short story in the context of functional stylistics played an integral part for it provided a portion of in depth understanding and interpretation of how each process type works and functions. It is also evident that the distribution of process type varies in different yet meaningful ways. Thus, by examining the transitivity process in the text is indeed indispensable for it explained how the field of the situation is being constructed, and have clear idea how transitivity patterns reflected the nature of the text.

This article analyses the scandal that broke out in Azerbaijan after the publication of Stone Dreams, a novel by Azerbaijani writer Akram Aylisli. Stone Dreams depicted and condemned the persecution against the Armenian population in Baku and Sumgait in 1988-1990, as well as the early twentieth century massacre of the Armenian community in the writer’s home village, Aylis in Nakhichevan. Akram Aylisli touched on a taboo and in a context with weak civic and democratic institutions, the discussion of such traumatic events in Azerbaijan’s recent past proved unacceptable to both society and the ruling elite. This article reaches beyond contemporary debates, however, to cover earlier and less well-known works with Armenian-Azerbaijani themes such as Evgeniy Voyskunskiy’s novel Maiden Dreams, Seymur Baycan’s Gugark, Maria Martirosova’s Photos To Remember Me By and Levon Javakhian’s short story “Kirve”. These works are reviewed here in terms of how they address issues of conflict, reconciliation and responsibility. This article underscores the importance of literary works dealing with conflict, as they usually reach a much broader audience than academic books.

А. Бунин. The article is devoted to the problem of forming the foundations of philological analysis and interpretation of a fiction text based on the material of I. A. Bunin's short story “The Raven”. The author justifies the need to integrate linguistic, linguistic-cultural and literary analysis in order to ensure the fullest possible perception of fiction discourse by foreign speakers. The author demonstrates the dependence of the understanding of a literary text and the aesthetic effect obtained when reading it on the depth of perception of verbal and artistic images based on the material of I. A. Bunin's Novella "the Raven". The means of creating images in the story are: symbolism of the name; direct or indirect characteristics; portrait of the hero; actions and actions of the hero; images-details; description of the psychological state of the hero; image of the inner world of the hero through memories; speech. Explication of the information contained in the text can proceed along the path of decoding precedent phenomena. When using a precedent name, the author appeals to certain concepts-images that were well known to him and his contemporaries, but do not mean anything to the modern reader. Thus, decoding hidden information requires knowledge accumulated in a given linguistic and cultural community or by humanity as a whole. Implying details play an important role in the disclosure of images, which in some cases are updated through comments prepared in advance by the teacher. Of particular interest is the problem of semantic perception and understanding of the name of the heroine of the novel, which contains references to precedent texts. Decoding the symbolism of the heroine's name gives students the ability to recognize, understand and adequately interpret the meaning of an artistic test with intertextual inclusions. The encoding of cultural information, which must later be unraveled by the reader, takes place when certain lexical units are introduced into the context of the novel.

Sherman Alexie's widely taught short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistight in Heaven (1993) ofers a largely unrecognized critique of the apocalyptic temporalities of United States militarism. War planners in the United States have frequently looked to the unrealized, potential holocausts of the future for a justiication of violence in the present. Alexie's collection—like much contemporary literature by Indian writers—unsettles this military logic by revealing how First Nations in North America and peoples around the world live with the consequences of a militarism that continually envisages impending antiAmerican violence as a means of justifying violence by the state. Alexie's writing provides a way of replacing the violent, futureoriented temporality of United States militarism with a “slow” temporality that acknowledges the un folding consequences of the past. Ultimately, this essay suggests a method for rereading “ethnic studies” literature with a view toward the interventions these texts make in mainstream United States culture.

Abstract: The article entitled Structural (and) Semantic: Perspective on Structuralism and the Application of A.J Greimas’ Narrative Theory examines the relevance of structuralism as well as its contribution either as a theory, method, or paradigm, in the development of contemporary literature and cultural studies. Structural Semantic is a book written by A.J. Greimas, a structuralist whose narrative theory is widely used. This research used critical descriptive method, concreted by Greimas' theory applied to a short story entitled “Filosofi Kopi”, in order to reveal its scope and limitation based on the paradigm of the structuralism. The result suggested that structuralism, both as theory and method, could identify meaning rigidly, yet structuralism could not elaborate meaning more complexly. However, structuralism is still necessary as a stage of analysis from which elaboration is possible. Key Words: structuralism, narrative, paradigm, actan

The article analyzes the novel by I. Franco “William Tell” through the prism of musical code and musical ecfrasis. So far, none of the French scholars has paid attention to the plot-forming role of the Rossini’s opera in the short story, but in the first part of the four-part short story the young couple is going to the opera, in the following parts Franco gradually reveals the heroine’s perception of the overture to the opera, and then its individual scenes. After the end of the opera, Olya novelistically unexpectedly, on the external-eventual plane of the novel, declares that she is not in love with Volodko, but on the internal, spiritual and psychological - thanks to the verbal description of the music and its perception by the heroes - this becomes natural. With the help of musical ecfrasis, the depth of Olya’s impression of the Rossini’s opera and the heroine’s psychological sensitivity to what she heard become clear. Moreover, Franco finds his “niche” in the image of the heroine's understanding of opera music: while foreign writers of the mid-19th century most often describe the feelings and emotions that heroes evoke in music, Franco, relying on picture programmability (landscapes of his native land and ideal representations of the heroine about family happiness), which Olya accompanies the heard music, reveals the rich inner world of the girl and her ideals. Rossini’s romantic heroic-patriotic opera “Wilhelm Tell”, her musical images and stage performance become a litmus test in the novel: the relationship of the characters to the opera performance, impressions of it become an important way of revealing their characters. Volodka’s superficial attitude to music as entertainment, on the one hand, and Olya’s ability under the influence of music to see the true meaning of life, correcting her worldview from pastorally romantic to heroic-romantic, on the other hand, make it possible to understand the different life positions of the heroes - the intellectual adaptive Volodka’s service to the people of Olya, and, in fact, the ideological and artistic concept of the writer himself.

One of the strategic directions in modernizing of education is the overcoming of reproductive mass education and the transition to a new educational paradigm, which provides cognitive activity and autonomy of thinking of those who study. "The school should teach how to think and teach how to study» - these are the pedagogical imperatives of the modern era.
