The effect of dietary habits on experience of oral disease symptoms in adolescents

Objectives: This study was to survey the distribution of Korean high school students’ dietary habits, body mass index (BMI) and oral symptom experiences and analyze the relevance of those to contribute to the development of a program to prevent and manage their oral diseases.Methods: The analysis was based on the raw data of the 15th Online Youth Health Behavior Survey in 2019 and the subjects were 27,919 high school students which went under complex sample analysis.Results: In the dietary habits of the subjects, the highest were ‘once or twice a week’ with 33.8% in recent 7 days’ fruit intake frequency, 42.9% of ‘once or twice a week’ in soda intake frequency, 35.8% of ‘once or twice a week’ in sweet drinks frequency, and 56.1% of ‘once or twice a week’ in fast food frequency. BMI showed the highest 52.9% of ‘normal’, 19.5% of ‘obesity’, 14.1% of ‘overweight’, and 13.5% of ‘underweight’ in order. In the recent 12-month experience of oral disease symptoms, the highest was 39.2% of ‘none’ with 25.4% of ‘one’, 18.0% of ‘more than three’, and 17.4% of ‘two’ in order. In the affecting factors on BMI ‘3 or 4 times a week’ in soda, ‘once or twice a week’ in sweet drinks were significantly high and ‘3 or 4 times a week’ were significantly low in vegetable intake (p< 0.05). The affecting factors on oral disease symptoms were significantly lower with male than female, and those on academic achievements and economic status were significantly lower in ‘mid’ than in ‘low’ (p< 0.01). ‘Once or twice a week’ soda intake and less sweet drinks and fast food were significantly low (p< 0.01). Less vegetable intake showed significantly higher (p< 0.01), and there were no significant relevance between BMI and oral disease symptoms.Conclusions: It is suggested that a program be developed as soon as possible for preventing and managing oral diseases for adolescents to grow up to be healthy adults in terms of surveying characteristic distribution of dietary habits, BMI and oral disease symptoms and analyzing the relevance among them efficiently.

Abstract Background This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep habits and oral disease symptoms in adolescents. Methods Among 62,276 adolescents who participated in the 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2017), we selected a total of 54,766 adolescents (age, 12–18 years; male, 49.9%) for the final analysis, after excluding those who did not report their sleep duration. The 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data were obtained from a stratified, multistage, clustered sample. Independent variables included general characteristics, oral health behavior, sleep types, sleep duration, and sleep quality; dependent variables comprised oral disease symptoms. Sleep was categorized according to bedtime astype A (bedtime < 1 a.m.) and type B (bedtime ≥ 1 a.m.). Data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results After adjusting for all covariates, adolescents with type A sleep had a higher risk of toothache on chewing (OR = 1.08, 95% CI 1.02–1.15) than adolescents with type B. Adolescents who slept for 6 h or less each night had a higher risk of pain in the tongue and buccal mucosa (OR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.18–1.54), gingival pain, and bleeding (OR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.19–1.45) than those who slept for more than 8 h. Adolescents with low quality of sleep had a higher risk of toothache or throbbing (OR = 1.70, 95% CI 1.60–1.81), toothache on chewing (OR = 1.73, 95% CI 1.65–1.82), and halitosis (OR = 1.51, 95% CI 1.41–1.59) than those with high quality of sleep. Conclusions Our findings indicate that some oral symptoms are related to sleep duration and quality. It is essential to inculcate good sleeping habits in adolescents by emphasizing the effects of inadequate sleep duration and quality.

Abstract Background Dietary modification shows promise as therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, it is unknown whether adolescents are interested in a dietary approach. Methods Cross-sectional survey of adolescents with IBD ages 14–21 on disease knowledge, dietary habits, and perceptions of diet therapy. Results A total of 132 subjects (48.5% female), mean age of 17.8 years and median disease length of 5 years (range 0, 16), completed the survey. Diet was perceived as a symptom trigger by 59.8% of subjects, and 45.4% had tried using diet as a treatment for symptom resolution, often without physician supervision and with limited success. Overall, subjects reported following a diet significantly more often than documented in the electronic medical record (EMR) by the physician (25.0% vs. 15.0%, p=0.033), with 72% agreement between subject response and EMR documentation on current status of diet modification (AC1=0.59, CI=0.45, 0.73). Subjects experiencing active disease symptoms as determined by Manitoba IBD Index were more likely to be currently modifying their diet compared to subjects without active disease symptoms (OR = 4.11, CI=1.58, 10.73, p=0.003). The subjects reporting unsuccessful dietary modification compliancy (25.7%, n=34) most commonly cited perceived lack of improvement in their IBD symptoms as the primary reason for stopping the diet (48.4%, n=15). Conclusions Adolescents with IBD perceive a relationship between diet and disease symptoms and are interested in dietary modification as a symptom management option. Our study suggests that a large proportion of adolescent IBD patients may already be attempting dietary modification, and therefore would be receptive to a modified dietary plan under the guidance of their gastroenterologist and dietitian. Much is still unknown about how dietary modification will fit in with current treatment regimens, but patient interest informs us that it is necessary to continue development and research of this promising therapeutic option.

Background and objectives: The primary oral disease during adolescence is dental caries. Less is known about the caries prevalence, oral health behavior, and sweets nutritional habits in Romanian adolescents. The objective of this study was to assess the actual caries prevalence among Romanian adolescents in a representative area of Romania, Cluj, and to correlate with oral hygiene behaviors and dietary sugary foods intake. Materials and methods: We have done a cross-sectional study of 650 adolescents aged 10 to 19-years-old (average age 15.3 ± 2.8). We performed the oral dental examination according to the WHO methodology, calculated the number of decayed, missing (due to caries), and filled teeth (DMFT index), assessed the oral hygiene and dietary behaviors using a two-section valid questionnaire and statistically analyzed the interrelation between DMFT, oral hygiene and eating behaviors by multivariate statistical analysis. Results: (a) The caries prevalence in the adolescent population enrolled in the study was 95.5%; (b) the mean DMFT was 3.13 ± 2.0, without significant differences between the urban and rural adolescents (p = 0.253); lower in females than males (p < 0.050), (c) more than one third (33.7%, n = 219) of teenagers are seldom or never brush their teeth in the evening; (c) 40.6% of adolescents are missing the regular annual dental check-ups leading to an increased DMFT as shown in the multivariate analysis (p = 0.038); and (d) there is an increased prevalence of caries with age (p = 0.020), and with sugary sweetened beverages consumption (p = 0.028). Conclusions: Our study evidenced a persistent high caries prevalence in Romanian teenagers. Their dietary habits and irregular dental check-up were associated with the occurrence of dental conditions.

We examined the relationship between Problematic Internet Use (PIU), sleep (sleep satisfaction, sleep duration), and experience of oral disease symptoms in Korean adolescents by gender. This cross-sectional study utilized the 6th (2010) Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Participants comprised 74,980 students from 400 middle schools and 400 high schools nationwide. Among these, 73,238 students from 799 schools (38,391 boys, 34,847 girls, aged 13–18 years) were included in the analysis (inclusion rate = 97.7%). Multiple logistic regression and analysis of moment structures (AMOS) analyses were performed to identify meaningful relationships between the three factors. The “high risk group” of problematic internet usage had increased experience of oral disease symptoms (boys: adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.92, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.63–2.28, girls: AOR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.50–2.63) compared to the general group. Boys who used the Internet for “5–6 h” had a higher risk of oral disease symptoms compared to those who used it for “less than 1 h” (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.01–1.53); however, this difference was not significant in Models II and III. For girls, the risk of 5–6 h of use (Model I: OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.40–2.04) was higher than that of the boys. In addition, the difference was significant in Models II and III for girl students who used the Internet for 5–6 h. In subgroup analysis, the high-risk group had a higher odds ratio for mild symptoms of bad breath to severe symptoms such as sore and bleeding gums. In addition, in the path analysis, PIU affected sleep and indirectly affected oral health. Direct and indirect causal relationships between the three factors were confirmed. Therefore, it is important to recognize that PIU can have a detrimental effect on mental, physical, and oral health.

The article presents the analysis of the relevant literature by international and national researches on the current state of obesity epidemic and discussed the evidence of the association between obesity and oral disease. The aim of the study was to assess the oral hygienic status and dietary habits of young schoolchildren with overweight and normal body weight and their correlation with dental caries. The study included 81 school children (1-4 primary years of the Poltava schools) aged 6-11 years. We studied anthropometric data and physical parameters, carried out dental check-up, determined saliva IL-6 content. Oral hygienic status was estimated using the simplified Green-Vermillion oral hygienic index (1964). Oral hygiene index in the children with excess body weight was unsatisfactory, while the children with normal body weight demonstrated satisfactory values. The results of the dental check-ups showed that caries prevalence made up 58.63% and 60.78% in the children with normal weight and overweight, respectively. Those figures did not differ significantly from the indicated age group of children with excessive and normal body weight. The study of the caries intensity showed that df + DMF index values were 1.48 ± 0.24 and 1 ± 0.54 in the children with normal body weight and 2.03 ± 0.36 and 1.25 ± 0.34 in the overweight children. In the children with normal body weight, the saliva IL-6 concentration was insignificantly higher and ranged from 6.12 ± 0.36 in the children with healthy periodontium, while in the children with gingivitis IL-6 concentration was 6.25 ± 0.33, which can be interpreted as early sensitive, albeit non-specific marker of inflammation, which manifests by clinical signs. The IL-6 concentration in the overweight children was within the range of 4.64 ± 0.26 (PMA = 0), and in this group of children with signs of inflammation was determined as slightly lower 4.46 ± 0.1, which may indicate stronger and more stable immune response. Thus, according to the dental findings, the oral hygiene status in all children with normal body weight was unsatisfactory, while in the overweight children demonstrated satisfactory oral hygiene status. The prevalence of caries in the studied group of children corresponds to the city values. The study of caries intensity showed that in the children with normal body weight md + MDF index is 1.48 ± 0.24 and 1 ± 0.54, while for the overweight children this figure was 2.03 ± 0.36 and 1.25 ± 0.34. The saliva IL-6 values can be used as important diagnostic indicators and the evaluation of cytokine content in biological fluids helps to obtain information about present medical condition as well as prevent inflammatory periodontal diseases.
