As the result of the research conducted in 2018–2020 at the All-Russian Rapeseed Research Institute, a scheme of primary seed farming of self-pollinated lines and F1 hybrids of spring rape has been developed, over 45 varieties have been created, including self-pollinated lines, simple interline and three-line hybrids. A comparative appraisal of spring rape inbred lines (female parents) and hybrids of the two most common systems of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) – Polima (LHS-1, LMS-1, LMS-2) and Ogura (LCS-4, LCS-5, LCS-6), was made. Yield traits distinctiveness in simple sterile hybrids of Polima and Ogura types was studied; it has been asserted that when compared to inbred maternal lines the traits predominate in hybrids, the indices are higher by 24.8% in the hybrids based on sterile Ogura cytoplasm and by 10.7% in the hybrids on sterile Polima cytoplasm. In our studies, self-pollinated lines, the maternal components of the hybrids, are inferior to the hybrids in terms of crude fat content in seeds, it is 6.5% lower than in the hybrid forms for the CMS Pol system and 17.3% lower for the forms of the CMS Ogu system. It was determined that the seed yield of CMS systems hybrids of Ogura type is on average 22.0% higher than the seed yield of Polima hybrids. The starting material for primary seed production of rapeseed hybrids based on CMS has been developed.

During the process of maize seed production, in order to ensure the genetic purity of parental forms of hybrid maize, an important work performed is the removal of male inflorescences from plants on mother rows. Hand detasseling has high precision but is labor-intensive. Mechanical detasseling offers the possibility to cover large acreages in a short period of time, but the number of leaves removed has a varying influence on plant performance and seed yield. The aim of this study was to simulate three types of damages on plants similar to those induced through mechanical detasseling and to assess the effects for five inbred lines during the course of three years. Results show that when tassels alone were removed, the average seed yield decreased an average of 4–21%. When two leaves were removed with the tassel, yield decreased an average of 22–31%, while when plants were cut above the main ear, seed yield decreased an average of 31–66%. Environmental conditions influenced seed yield, especially high temperatures during flowering. Yield response to tassel and leaves removal varied between the inbred lines. Genotype controls maize ear and kernel characters, while environmental factors exercise a strong influence on seed yield, due to the succession of years with contrasting weather conditions in a key phenophase. Within the trend of full mechanization in agriculture, identification of inbred lines that cope better with plant damage can assist in optimizing seed production.

Experiments were carried out to determine the influence of flowering time and the pattern of pre-anthesis development on the seed yield of spring rape. The responses of six cultivars to variation in sowing date at a site 100 km east of Perth indicated that the duration of the vegetative phase and the time of the season at which seed development commenced were both important determinants of seed yield. Seed yields decreased with a reduction in the duration of vegetative development and an extension in the time between 1 October and first flowering. These data suggested that an optimal flowering time for this and similar environments would, assuming a mid-June sowing, be one that allowed for at least 100 days of pre-anthesis development and ensured that seed development commenced no later than 1 October. In a controlled environment experiment, different patterns of pre-anthesis development induced in the cultivar Target by exposure to different photoperiodic regimes were associated with substantial variation in seed yield. This variation in seed yield was primarily associated with differences in the duration of the stem elongation phase: an increase in duration resulted in the production of greater numbers of flowers (and pods) per plant and ultimately greater numbers of seeds per plant. As seed size was largely unaffected by variation in photoperiod during pre-anthesis development, extension of the stem elongation phase was accompanied by significant increases in seed yield. Substantial genotypic variation in the duration of the stem elongation phase was observed among a group of spring rape cultivars and their F1 hybrids grown in a controlled environment comparable with that prevailing in the field during this phase of development. Longer periods of stem elongation were accompanied by increased pod production and higher seed yields. Evidence from this and earlier studies indicated that there was sufficient genetic variation in pre-anthesis development to facilitate yield improvement through selection based on developmental characters. The utilization of controlled environment facilities in conducting such a selection program is discussed.

One of the primary tasks of sunflower breeding is the development of inbred lines by interspecific hybridization for the purpose of obtaining high-yielding, stable hybrids that are characterized by altered plant appearance and the ability to produce a higher number of plants per unit area under intensive agriculture conditions. Studied in this paper by the line x tester method were seven new divergent cms inbred lines (A) lines, three Rf restorers utilized as testers, and 21 F1 hybrids developed. Significant differences in the mean values of all the traits studied were observed. Highly significant GCA and SCA values were obtained for petiole length (PL) and total leaf area per plant (TLA). The nonadditive component of genetic variance played the main role in the inheritance of both these traits. This was confirmed by the GCA/SCA ratios for PL and LA in the F1 generation, which were below the value of one (0.43 and 0.07, respectively). The greatest average contribution to the expression of PL (49.9%) and TLA (57.1%) was found in the female A lines. A positive correlation was found between seed yield (SY) and PL (0.374*) and TLA (0.630**), while seed oil content (SOC) and TLA were found to be negatively correlated (-0.520**). The findings of this study can be used in the development of new high-yielding sunflower hybrids with high yields based on interspecific hybridization.

Development of two-way onion (Allium cepa L.) hybrids is difficult due to poor seed yields on inbred female parents. Seed yield of onion is affected by inbreeding depression and the seed-production environment. A standard diallel was used to estimate combining abilities for seed yield among seven inbred onion lines. Males and hybrids differed significantly (P < 0.05) for seed yields. Combinations of relatively high-by-high seed-yielding inbred parents were not always the best combinations; combinations of medium-by-medium or medium-by-high seed yielders also produced good F1 seed yielders. For the seven inbred lines, significant correlations (P < 0.05) were observed between mean seed yield per bulb and scape height. Parent-offspring regressions revealed no significant relationship between seed yields of randomly selected, open-pollinated bulbs and their S1 families. Results indicate that relative seed yields of individual bulbs after self-pollination cannot be used to predict seed yields of progeny families. However, the seed yield of inbred lines of onion may reflect the potential seed yield of F1 male-sterile lines.

AbstractSeveral biotic and abiotic stresses significantly decrease the biomass accumulation and seed yield of sesame crops under rainfed areas. However, plant growth regulators (such as Paclobutrazol) can improve the total dry matter and seed production of the sesame crop. The effects of the paclobutrazol application on dry matter accumulation and seed yield had not been studied before in sesame under rainfed conditions. Therefore, a two-year field study during 2018 and 2019 was conducted with key objectives to assess the impacts of paclobutrazol on leaf greenness, leaf area, total dry matter production and partitioning, seed shattering, and seed yield of sesame. Two sesame cultivars (TS-5 and TS-3) were treated with four paclobutrazol concentrations (P0 = Control, P1 = 100 mg L−1, P2 = 200 mg L−1, P3 = 300 mg L−1). The experiment was executed in RCBD-factorial design with three replications. Compared with P0, treatment P3 improved the leaf greenness of sesame by 17%, 38%, and 60% at 45, 85, and 125 days after sowing, respectively. However, P3 treatment decreased the leaf area of sesame by 14% and 20% at 45 and 85 days after sowing than P0, respectively. Compared with P0, treatment P3 increased the leaf area by 46% at 125 days after sowing. On average, treatment P3 also improved the total biomass production by 21% and partitioning in roots, stems, leaves, capsules, and seeds by 23%, 19%, 23%, 22%, and 40%, respectively, in the whole growing seasons as compared to P0. Moreover, under P3 treatment, sesame attained the highest seed yield and lowest seed shattering by 27% and 30%, respectively, compared to P0. This study indicated that by applying the paclobutrazol concentration at the rate of 300 mg L−1 in sesame, the leaf greenness, leaf areas, biomass accumulation, partitioning, seed yield, and shatter resistance could be improved. Thus, the optimum paclobutrazol level could enhance the dry matter accumulation and seed production capacity of sesame by decreasing shattering losses under rainfed conditions.

Abstract A single foliar spray with either antiethylene compounds or cytokinins shortly after anthesis reduced conelet abortion by half and doubled seed production. Spraying with boric acid plus Cytex® , a relatively economical form of cytokinin derived from seaweed, was equally effective,and addition of certain antiethylene compounds further improved seed yield. Abstract The experimental material for the present study comprised of 28 inbred lines (including two checks) which were developed by mutation and hybridization among the lines from AICRP trials MARS, UAS, Dharwad and on the basis of SPAD readings and stay green nature, they were considered as drought tolerant lines. These lines were used for the present experiment and were evaluated under both normal and moisture stress condition in rain out shelter to study their root characteristics. Among 28 inbreds evaluated, eight inbred lines i.e. DSR-13, DSR-19, DSR-23, DSR-24, DSR-37, DSR-66, DSR-107 and DSR-132 were identified as drought tolerant nature which exhibited least reduction in their yield under moisture stress condition. Simultaneously hybridization programme was also initiated during summer 2018 using these 28 inbred lines as testers (males) and 5 CMS lines as female lines in Line × Tester fashion. Among 140 hybrids developed, only 40 F1 hybrid combinations were further analyzed for heterosis and combining ability studies along with four checks RHA 6D-1, RHA 95C-1, KBSH-53 and Cauvery Champ. Most of the hybrid combinations showed significant negative heterosis for flowering indicating earliness, and also all the combinations showed a positive heterosis for plant height indicating tallness dominant over dwarf checks. The combinations CMS 7-1-1 A × DSR-37 (624 kg/ha), CMS-853A × DSR-19 (624 kg/ha), and CMS-853A × DSR-23 (619 kg/ha) exhibited significant maximum heterosis for seed yield (kg ha−1) over the checks KBSH-53 (496.50 kg/ha) and Cauvery Champ (486.50 kg/ha) showing maximum seed yield per hectare.

Multiple regression and response surface plots were used to analyze the effects of common lambsquarters population density and interference duration on weed growth and soybean seed yield. Under favorable growing conditions in 1986, weed biomass production at all population densities and interference durations was four to five times that produced in 1987, under less favorable conditions. However, there was no significant treatment by year interaction for soybean seed yield reduction by common lambsquarters, and production of each kg/ha weed biomass resulted in an average soybean yield reduction of 0.26 kg/ha. Utilizing 5% yield loss as an arbitrary threshold level, the regression equation predicted a common lambsquarters density threshold of 2 plants/m of row for 5 weeks of interference after crop emergence and 1 plant/m of row for 7 weeks. Seed production by individual common lambsquarters plants was highly correlated (r=0.92) with weed dry weight, and seed production ranged from 30 000 to 176 000 seeds/plant.

For five years, the effect of cultivars and vegetative stage of cutting were measured on red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) seed production. The first group of cultivars included Hungaropoli, Ottawa and Lakeland harvested in 1981 and 1982. The second group included Arlington, Florex and Prosper I harvested in 1984, 1985 and 1987. The total annual seed yield differed within cultivars and the highest seed yield was obtained with Hungaropoly and Florex. In the first cultivar group, the tetraploid Hungaropoly obtained a kernel weight higher than the diploids Lakeland and Ottawa. In the second group of cultivars, all diploids, Arlington yielded the highest kernel weight. The percentage of seed germination of Hungaropoly was higher than Lakeland and Ottawa while for Florex it was slightly higher than Arlington and Prosper I. A prior vegetative cutting is essential for good seed yield. In the absence of vegetative cutting seed weight seemed improved. The stage of development at which vegetative cutting is done has little influence on percentage seed germination. These results have shown that despite the strong effect of climatic conditions on seed production, the choice of the optimum stage for vegetative cutting and a well adapted cultivar are important aspects in successful seed production.Key words: Red clover, seed production, cultivar, stage of cutting
