Since every mistake made in the healthcare industry can cause permanent harm or even death, some fundamental requirements should be considered when planning and designing operating rooms. Lighting is one of the most important ergonomic factors, especially for operating rooms. This paper investigates the integration of the lean approach and six sigma in measuring the efficiency of LED technology, which can also be regarded as a factor affecting the operating room efficiency. Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and Gage Control methods were applied to determine measurement variability in operating room illumination measurement process. Repeatability and reproducibility (%R&R) was found 12.89%. After calibration, %R&R value was found 8.21%, which implies that calibration helped reduce variability.

MSA takes a very important role in project application of Lean Six Sigma (LSS). In this paper, the concepts and content of MSA in LSS are introduced, and the R & R model of the MSA is discussed. The average and range analysis method and variance analysis method are elaborated, and a comparative analysis of the commonplace methods in MSA is addressed. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the application of MSA methods in data analysis of LSS improvement project. The results show the impact of different methods on the evaluation conclusions of MSA.

ANOVA gauge repeatability and reproducibility study is the most popular tool for measurement system analysis. Two experimental designs can be applied depending on the durability of the objects. If repeated measurements are possible or sufficient homogeneous nonrepeatable samples are available, crossed design is appropriate; otherwise, nested design should be used. In this paper, we investigated the adequacy of ANOVA gauge repeatability and reproducibility study from the perspective of practitioners. We proposed a Monte Carlo simulation that is close to the realistic procedure to evaluate the adequacy of both structures. During the evaluation, we considered the average performance metrics, percentage of correct decision, histogram shape, and symmetric mean absolute percentage error for the four popular performance metrics, namely, % Study Variation, % Contribution, % Tolerance, and the number of distinct categories. The experimental results show that the nested design fails to judge the precision of the gauge while the crossed design succeeds.

Healthcare systems internationally are working under increasing demand to use finite resources with greater efficiency. The drive for efficiency utilises process improvement methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma. This study outlines a pilot Lean Six Sigma intervention designed to release nursing time to care within a peri-operative environment; this was achieved by collaborating with stakeholders to redesign the process for laparoscopic hernia surgical case preparation (set up) material. Across 128 laparoscopic hernia surgical cases, the pilot resulted in a 55% decrease in overall nursing time spent in gathering and preparing materials for laparoscopic hernia surgical cases, with a corresponding reduction in packaging waste. The major impact of releasing nursing time to care within busy Operating Room environments enabled nurses to focus on continuing to deliver high-quality care to their patients and reduce pressure expressed by the Operating Room nurses. The results have led to an ongoing review of other surgical procedures preparation to further release nursing time and will be of interest to perioperative teams internationally.

For some quality inspection practices, subjective judgements based on the inspectors' experience and knowledge, such as visual inspection, may be required for some particular quality characteristics. This kind of measurement system, including its associated randomness and fuzziness, should be assessed by Measurement system analysis (MSA) before its application. For such purpose, this article represents observations with randomness and fuzziness from MSAs as fuzzy random variables, and then two pairs of descriptive parameters, i.e., expected value and variance, are derived. Then, the relationship of the total sum of squares of factors is proven to hold, so that fuzzy analysis of variance (FANOVA) in terms of gauge repeatability and reproducibility can be developed. The proposed approach has the advantage that FANOVA is developed based on the relationship of the total sum of squares of factors, considering randomness and fuzziness. A real case in the semiconductor packaging industry is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approaches to MSA.

Abstract The submitted article focuses on a detailed explanation of the average and range method (Automotive Industry Action Group, Measurement System Analysis approach) and of the honest Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility method (Evaluating the Measurement Process approach). The measured data (thickness of plastic parts) were evaluated by both methods and their results were compared on the basis of numerical evaluation. Both methods were additionally compared and their advantages and disadvantages were discussed. One difference between both methods is the calculation of variation components. The AIAG method calculates the variation components based on standard deviation (then a sum of variation components does not give 100 %) and the honest GRR study calculates the variation components based on variance, where the sum of all variation components (part to part variation, EV & AV) gives the total variation of 100 %. Acceptance of both methods among the professional society, future use, and acceptance by manufacturing industry were also discussed. Nowadays, the AIAG is the leading method in the industry.

The article discusses the application of MSA in the process of quality control of production, under the relevant requirements in ISO/TS16949. With DWST experimental platform of large electronic current as an example, it analyzes the data achievement, the application of statistics and the methods of analysis report in the evaluation of variations on bias, stability, linearity, repeatability and reproducibility. The research gives a guide to the effective implement of MSA in the production and manufacture.
