The 210Po/210Pb disequilibrium was attempted to reveal the small-scale particle dynamics in the eastern tropical North Pacific. Seawater samples in the full water column were collected from three sites in the Tehuantepec bowl near the East Pacific Ridge for determination of dissolved and particulate 210Po and 210Pb. Our results show that TPo/TPb activity ratios in the full water column at the three sites are less than 1, with an average of 0.56, indicating that the total 210Po in the oligotrophic sea is significantly deficient. The activity ratios of DPo/DPb in the dissolved phase are less than 1, while those in the particulate phase are greater than 1 (except for the bottom 300 m), indicating fractionation between 210Po and 210Pb in the scavenging process. A negative linear relationship between 210Po deficit and silicate proves that biological activities are responsible for 210Po deficiency in the upper 200 m. However, the deficit of 210Po in the bottom 300 m may be caused by the horizontal transport of the hydrothermal plume. After correcting the horizontal contribution, the removal rates of 210Po for the 200–1,500 m and the bottom 300 m layers increased by 7.5–21 and 26.1–29.5%, respectively. Correspondingly, the variation range of the residence time of a total 210Po became smaller. Our calculations suggest that horizontal transport is acting as a stabilizer for small-scale variation in the 210Po deficit in the eastern tropical North Pacific. Our study highlights the need to pay more attention to the small-scale variation of 210Po deficit when applying 210Po/210Pb disequilibria to trace biogeochemical processes, and the mechanism responsible for this variation deserves further study.

Reaction of 3',5'-di-O-benzoyl-6-methyl-2'-deoxyuridine (IIa) with elementary bromine or iodine afforded 5-halogeno derivatives IIc and IId which on methanolysis gave 5-bromo-6-methyl-2'-deoxyurine (Ic) and 5-iodo-6-methyl-2'-deoxyurine (Id), respectively. The CD spectra of Ic, Id and 6-methyl-2'-deoxyuridine (Ia) are compared and discussed with regard to determination of the nucleoside conformation. Unlike 5-bromo- and 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine, the 6-methyl derivatives Ic and Id exhibit neither antibacterial nor antiviral activity. Nor do they exert any antimetabolic effect on the de novo DNA synthesis in primary rabbit kidney cells.

Nowadays, there are many commercial products from natural resources on the market, but they still have many additives to increase their biological activities. On the other hand, there is particular interest in natural sources that would have antimicrobial properties themselves and would inhibit the growth and the reproduction of opportunistic microorganisms. Therefore, a comparative antimicrobial study of natural samples of aloe and its commercial products was performed. Qualitative and quantitative determination of antimicrobial efficiency of Aloe arborescens and Aloe barbadensis and its commercial products on fungi, Gram-negative, and Gram-positive bacteria was performed. Samples exhibited antimicrobial activity and slowed down the growth of all tested microorganisms. Research has shown that natural juices and gels of A. arborescens and A. barbadensis are at higher added concentrations comparable to commercial aloe products, especially against microbial cultures of Bacillus cereus, Candida albicans, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whose growths were completely inhibited at a microbial concentration of 600 μg/mL. Of particular importance are the findings of the good antimicrobial efficacy of fresh juice and gel of A. arborescens on tested microorganisms, which is less known and less researched. These results show great potential of A. arborescens for further use in medicine, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract Currently research of lactic acid bacteria focus primarily on the functional probiotics, which are major beneficial biota in the gastrointestinal tract, have been industrial manufactured. Probiotics confer health benefits on the host need adequate amounts. However, the absence of data makes it difficult to ensure the maintenance biological activities and population of probiotic. In this research, a fractional factorial design and steepest ascent experiment were used to analyze the influence of lyoprotectant as carbohydrates, prebiotics and amino acids on the survival of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The results indicated a maximum survival rate and population of viable bacteria of L. rhamnosus to be 55.84 % and 1.60 ×1011 CFU/g after freeze-dried by using a combination of 10 g/100mL Sucrose, 2.5 g/100mL Isomaltooligosaccharide, 12 g/100mL Hydroxyproline. To a large extent, the survival and viability were dependent on the cryoprotectant used and make probiotics more attractive from a practical application in industrial viewpoint.

In this work, biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests with cellulose as a model substrate were performed with the aid of three manually operated or conventional experimental setups (based on manometer, water column and gas bag) and one automated apparatus specially designed for analysis of BMP. The methane yields were 340 ± 18, 354 ± 13, 345 ± 15 and 366 ± 5 ml CH4/g VS obtained from experimental setups with manometer, water column, gas bag, and automatic methane potential test system, which corresponded to a biodegradability of 82, 85, 83 and 88% respectively. The results demonstrated that the methane yields of cellulose obtained from conventional and automatic experimental setups were comparable; however, the methane yield obtained from the automated apparatus showed greater precision. Moreover, conventional setups for the BMP test were more time- and labour-intensive compared with the automated apparatus.
