Introduction: Physical distancing policy during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic requires adolescents to spend most of their time at home, thus increasing Internet use duration. Limited social interaction with their peers may lead to loneliness and an increased risk of mental health among adolescents. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Internet addiction (IA) among adolescents and analyze the influence of psychosocial factors toward the heightened risk of IA during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: An online survey comprising sociodemographic questionnaire, Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (KDAI), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was distributed. Overall, a total of 2,932 adolescents (mean age, 17.38 ± 2.24 years old; female, 78.7%), originating from 33 of 34 provinces in Indonesia, completed the survey.Results: The point prevalence of IA among Indonesian adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak was 19.3%. Increased Internet use duration, internalization, externalization, low prosocial behavior, and sleep disturbances were found as risk factors of IA, either directly or as mediating variables. Physical distancing, large-scale social restriction (PSBB), and health status were not correlated to IA.Discussion: Physical distancing was not established as a risk of IA. This could be due to other psychological factors such as internalization, externalization, prosocial, and sleep problems that had correlations to IA occurrence among adolescents in the COVID-19 pandemic. Sleep impairment might have resulted from the emotional and behavioral issues and directly contributed to IA development.Conclusion: The present study found the prevalence of IA among Indonesian adolescents to be higher than the adult during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several psychological measures were indicated to increase the risk of IA, while physical distancing did not elevate the risk. Thus, remote schooling is preferable in Indonesia along with proper parental supervision to minimize Internet use for entertainment purposes.

Internet addiction (IA) is typically defined as a condition where an individual has lost control of their internet use and proceeds to use the internet excessively to the point where he/she experiences problematic consequences which ultimately have a negative effect on his/her life. The authors examine what constitutes an addiction, the definition of internet addiction, the complications which exist in the various diagnostic methods of successfully diagnosing internet addiction, the criticism some of these diagnostic methods have taken and the effects of excessive internet use by both students and employees. They also highlight those individuals who are of increased risk of developing this condition including positive diagnosis of the addiction and the resultant effects it has on the individual's family life, employment, social life and personal wellbeing, before finally looking at possible methods and treatments that can be employed for treating internet addiction.

Abstract Falls-related hospitalization and injury rates are steadily increasing globally due to a growth in the aging population, and the associated health problems that increase risk of falls. One such associated health problem is sleep disturbances and disorders. Recent cohort studies have shown that subjectively reported poor quality sleep is associated with an increased risk of falls. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by the repetitive reductions, or cessation, of airflow. Some studies have shown that OSA impairs posture/balance and gait with nocturnal hypoxemia the likely main cause. Emerging evidence suggests that treating OSA by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) can improve gait, but no studies to date have examined the effect of CPAP on posture/balance. The overall control of balance relies on a complex interaction between several physiological functions including vestibular, muscle, visual, and cognitive functions. We postulate that OSA impacts balance by affecting these different systems to various degrees, with the nocturnal hypoxic burden likely playing an important role. Importantly, these impairments in balance/posture and possible falls risk may be alleviated by OSA treatment. Larger mechanistic studies are needed to properly elucidate how OSA affects falls risk and future large-scale randomized control trials are needed to determine the effectiveness of OSA treatment in reducing the risk of falls.

Abstract Background Problematic internet use (PIU) is an increasingly worrisome issue, as youth population studies are establishing links with internalizing and externalizing problems. There is a need for a better understanding of psychiatric diagnostic profiles associated with this issue, as well as its unique contributions to impairment. Here, we leveraged the ongoing, large-scale Child Mind Institute Healthy Brain Network, a transdiagnostic self-referred, community sample of children and adolescents (ages 5-21), to examine the associations between PIU and psychopathology, general impairment, physical health and sleep disturbances.Methods A total sample of 564 (190 female) participants between the ages of 7-15 (mean = 10.80, SD = 2.16), along with their parents/guardians, completed diagnostic interviews with clinicians, answered a myriad of self-report questionnaires, and underwent physical testing as part of the Healthy Brain Network protocol.Results PIU was positively associated with depressive disorders (aOR = 2.34; CI: 1.18-4.56; p = .01), the combined subtype of ADHD (aOR = 1.79; CI: 1.08-2.98; p = .02), greater levels of impairment (Standardized Beta = 4.79; CI: 3.21-6.37; p < .01) and increased sleep disturbances (Standardized Beta = 3.01; CI: 0.58-5.45; p = .02), even when accounting for demographic covariates and psychiatric comorbidity.Conclusions The association between PIU and psychopathology, as well as its impact on impairment and sleep disturbances, highlight the urgent need to gain an understanding of mechanisms in order to inform public health recommendations on internet use in U.S. youth.

Abstract Objective: The current study aims to explore precipitating and risk factors for internet addiction (IA) in university undergraduate students, and to provide evidence for interventions and the early prevention of IA in this population.Method: Four thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight college sophomores completed an online survey on their internet use-related behaviours and social risk factors.Result: Compared to female students (5.4%), more male students (8.3%) were in the moderate and severe IA groups. Male and female students tend to engage in different types of online entertainment. There are some shared and some different precipitating factors for internet use and risk factors for IA between the different gender groups.Conclusion: By understanding the differences and similarities in risk factors for IA in both gender groups of the university undergraduate students, interventions can be more precisely designed to target specific behaviours in this populations.

This large-scale study aimed to test, among Chinese adolescents, the association between problematic Internet use (PIU), non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD), and depressive symptoms, as well as the mediating effects of NMUPD on the associations above. This study used the data from the 2017 National School-based Chinese Adolescents Health Survey, and 24,345 students’ questionnaires qualified for the analyses. Generalized linear mixed models and path models were performed. In the models without mediation, PIU was associated with depressive symptoms (unstandardized β estimate = 0.26, 95% CI = 0.25–0.27); frequent use of opioid or sedative was also related to depressive symptoms (unstandardized β estimate for opioid = 2.77, 95% CI = 1.90–3.63; unstandardized β estimate for sedative = 4.45, 95% CI = 3.02–5.88). Additionally, the results of the path models indicated that opioid misuse partially mediated the association between PIU and depressive symptoms. PIU and opioid/sedative misuse were related to the increased risk of depressive symptoms, respectively. The association above might be complicated, and PIU may elevate the risk of opioid or sedative misuse and depressive symptoms, which in turn could worsen the situation of PIU and vice versa. Multidisciplinary health intervention programs to prevent adolescents involving in PIU, as well as NMPUD, are recommended to be provided.

Background: Health care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of acquiring and transmitting COVID-19 infection. Moreover, they present role models for communities with regards to attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination. Hence, hesitancy of HCWs towards vaccination can crucially affect the efforts aiming to contain the pandemic. Previously published studies paid little attention to HCWs in Arab countries, which have a population of over 440 million. Objectives: To assess the rates of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Arabic-speaking HCWs residing in and outside Arab countries, and their perceived barriers towards vaccination. Methods: A cross-sectional study based on an online survey was conducted from 14–29 January 2021, targeting Arabic-speaking HCWs from all around the world. Results: The survey recruited 5708 eligible participants (55.6% males, 44.4% females, age 30.6 ± 10 years) from 21 Arab countries (87.5%) and 54 other countries (12.5%). Our analysis showed a significant rate of vaccine hesitancy among Arabic-speaking HCWs residing in and outside of Arab countries (25.8% and 32.8%, respectively). The highest rates of hesitancy were among participants from the western regions of the Arab world (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria). The most cited reasons for hesitancy were concerns about side effects and distrust of the expedited vaccine production and healthcare policies. Factors associated with higher hesitancy included age of 30–59, previous or current suspected or confirmed COVID-19, female gender, not knowing the vaccine type authorized in the participant’s country, and not regularly receiving the influenza vaccine. Conclusion: This is the first large-scale multinational post-vaccine-availability study on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among HCWs. It reveals high rates of hesitancy among Arab-speaking HCWs. Unless addressed properly, this hesitancy can impede the efforts for achieving widespread vaccination and collective immunity.

Abstract Introduction Stress is a common precipitant of acute insomnia and likely contributed to increased reports of sleep disturbances during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many other sleep and lifestyle changes may have also precipitated acute insomnia. This study aimed to clarify which factors, beyond perceived stress, contributed to the development of acute insomnia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods The study consisted of 578 participants with acute insomnia and 741 good sleepers. Participants completed an online survey assessing insomnia symptoms, sleep, lifestyle changes and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify contributing factors to acute insomnia when controlling for demographic differences between groups. Results Perceived stress was a significant predictor of acute insomnia during the pandemic (p&lt;.001). However, after adjusting for stress, individuals who altered their sleep timing (p&lt;.001) or increased their use of technology before bed (p=.037) during the pandemic were at a 3-fold increased risk of acute insomnia. Other sleep factors associated with acute insomnia included dream changes (p=.001), sleep effort (p&lt;.001), and cognitive pre-sleep arousal (p&lt;.001). For pandemic factors, being very worried about contracting COVID-19 (p&lt;.002) and more stringent COVID-19 government restrictions (p&lt;.001) increased the risk. Anxiety (p&lt;.001) and depressive (p&lt;.001) symptoms, as well as the personality trait of agreeableness (p=.010), also contributed to acute insomnia. Discussion To reduce acute insomnia during the COVID-19 pandemic, public health messaging should promote stress reduction and mental health care, but also modifiable behaviours such as keeping consistent sleep patterns and reducing technology use before bed.

BACKGROUND Internet use during the COVID-19 pandemic has increased exponentially, resulting in increasing prevalence of Internet addiction. The negative effects of Internet addiction on health including psychological distress have become more prevalent during the pandemic. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to investigate the associations between Internet addiction and psychological distress, including the fear of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and depression, in Korean adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A population-based cross-sectional online survey was conducted from 14th to 18th May 2021. Potential adult survey respondents aged 20 years or older were randomly extracted from one of the largest online survey panels in Korea, matching Korean national demographical proportions (i.e., region, gender, and age). 1,155 participants were recruited. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the participants’ characteristics and analyze the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) respectively. RESULTS 11.17%, 15.15% and 37.23% of the Korean adults were at risk of Internet addiction, COVID-19 fear, and depression respectively. Internet addiction was positively associated with COVID-19 fear (aOR=3.25, 95% CI [2.10, 5.04]) and depressive symptoms (aOR=6.40, 95% CI [4.15, 9.86]). Moreover, the participant group with high COVID-19 fear and depression had a 10.22 times higher odds ratio for Internet addiction (aOR=10.22, 95% CI [5.88, 17.77]), compared with the group with low COVID-19 fear and depression. CONCLUSIONS Addictive use of the Internet was significantly associated with psychological distress during COVID-19 pandemic. Development of public health strategies that mitigate addictive Internet use and increase eHealth literacy will be useful to secure the public’s psychological well-being.

Introduction: In the last decades, the great technological development increased Internet popularity, emerging the concern about its overuse. The objectives of this study were to assess and characterize Internet use in adolescence, determine Internet addiction and clarify its association with sleep disorders and excessive daytime sleepiness.Material and Methods: It was performed an observational, cross sectional and community-based study. The target were students attending 7th and 8th grades, to whom was applied an online self-report questionnaire to assess sociodemographic features, Internet use, Internet dependence, sleep characteristics and excessive daytime sleepiness.Results: A total of 727 adolescents were included with a mean age 13 ± 0.9 years. Three-quarters of teenagers use Internet daily and 41% do it for three or more hours/day, mainly at home. The phone and laptop were the main devices used. Online games and social networks use were the main activities performed. Internet dependence was observed in 19% of adolescents, and it was associated with male gender, social networks use, mainly Twitter and Instagram use, self-perceived sleep problems, initial and middle insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness (p < 0.05).Discussion: The results confirm the highlight that Internet has in adolescents routine, who prioritize in their use access to social networks and online games, using single devices, less subject to parental control.Conclusion: The Internet addiction rate observed and its association with sleep alterations and daytime sleepiness emphasizes the importance of this issue.
