This paper is an analysis of the expression hospa, which is a part of the name Certyfi kat „Super HoSpa” (“Super HoSpa” Certifi cate), a distinction awarded to the best Polish hospices by the Rak’n’Roll Foundation. The neologism hospa is described in terms of its formal structure (as a contamination compound) and at the conceptual level (as a cognitive amalgam) using G. Fauconnier and M. Turner’s conceptual blending theory. Based on dictionary and corpus data as well as texts concerning hospices with the title “Super HoSpa”, the author reconstructs the representation of a patient-friendly hospice. What serves as a background for the description is the issues of palliative medicine and care and the stereotypical image of hospice established in the society, which the creators of the certifi cate are trying to “disenchant”, also through language.

Abstract. Recently, Sui, He, and Humphreys (2012) introduced a new paradigm to measure perceptual self-prioritization processes. It seems that arbitrarily tagging shapes to self-relevant words (I, my, me, and so on) leads to speeded verification times when matching self-relevant word shape pairings (e.g., me – triangle) as compared to non-self-relevant word shape pairings (e.g., stranger – circle). In order to analyze the level at which self-prioritization takes place we analyzed whether the self-prioritization effect is due to a tagging of the self-relevant label and the particular associated shape or due to a tagging of the self with an abstract concept. In two experiments participants showed standard self-prioritization effects with varying stimulus features or different exemplars of a particular stimulus-category suggesting that self-prioritization also works at a conceptual level.

Youth literature within the German Democratic Republic (GDR) officially enjoyed equal status with adult literature, with authors often writing for both audiences. Such parity of esteem pre-supposed that youth literature would also adopt the cultural–political frameworks designed to nurture the establishment of socialism on German soil. In their quest to forge a legitimate national literature capable of transforming the population, politicians and writers drew repeatedly upon the cultural heritage of Weimar classicism and the Bildungsroman, Humboldtian educational traditions and Soviet-inspired models of socialist realism. Adopting a script theory approach inspired by Jean Matter Mandler, this article explores how directive cultural policies lead to the emergence of multiple scripts which inform the nature and narrative of individual works. Three broad ideological scripts within GDR youth literature are identified which underpin four distinct narrative scripts employed by individual writers to support, challenge and ultimately subvert the primacy of the Bildungsroman genre. A close reading of works by Strittmatter, Pludra, Görlich, Tetzner and Saalmann reveals further how conceptual blending with classical and fairy-tale scripts is exploited to legitimise and at times mask critique of transformation and education inside and outside the classroom and to offer young protagonists a voice often denied their readers.

Walter Pater's late-nineteenth-century literary genre of the imaginary portrait has received relatively little critical attention. Conceived of as something of a continuum between his role as an art critic and his fictional pursuits, this essay probes the liminal space of the imaginary portraits, focusing on the role of the parergon, or frame, in his portraits. Guided by Pater's reading of Kant, who distinguishes between the work (ergon) and that which lies outside of the work (the parergon), between inside and outside, and contextualised alongside the analysis of Derrida, who shows how such distinctions have always already deconstructed themselves, I demonstrate a similar operation at work in the portraits. By closely analysing the parerga of two of Pater's portraits, ‘Duke Carl of Rosenmold’ (1887) and ‘Apollo in Picardy’ (1893), focusing on his partial quotation of Goethe in the former, and his playful autocitation and impersonation of Heine in the latter, I argue that Pater's parerga seek to destabilise the relationship between text and context so that the parerga do not lie outside the text but are implicated throughout in their reading, changing the portraits constitutively. As such, the formal structure of the parergon in Pater's portraits is also a theoretical fulcrum in his aesthetic criticism and marks that space where the limits of, and distinctions between, art and life become blurred.

The journal of Ksenofont A. Govorsky “Vestnik Yugo-Zapadnoy I Zapadnoy Rossii” (“South-West and West Russia Herald”) is known in the history of pubic thought as odious and reactionary. However, this stereotypical image needs some revision: the anti-Polish discourse on the pages of the magazine was not so much nationalistic as anti-aristocratic in nature. Considering the “Poles” primarily as carriers of the aristocratic principles, the editorial board of the magazine claimed to protect the broad masses of the people. Throughout its short history, the magazine consistently opposed both revolutionary and aristocratic propaganda. However, the regional limitations of the problems covered in the magazine did not give it the opportunity to reflect on the essential closeness of the revolutionary and reactionary principles. Yu.F. Samarin and I.S. Aksakov – whose conservative-democratic views, on the whole, were close to “Western Russianism”, promoted by the authors of “Vestnik Yugo-Zapadnoy I Zapadnoy Rossii”, managed to reach that goal.

Asuhan palitif untuk pasien dengan HIV/AIDS merupakan elemen inti dari asuhan pasien dengan HIV/AIDS. Asuhan paliatif yang berbasis home care saat ini menjadi elemen penting yang digunakan di berbagainegara. Akan tetapi, tidak ada studi atau tinjauan sebelumnya yang menganalisis efektifitas dari asuhanpaliatif yang berbasis home care pada pasien dengan HIV/AIDS. Tujuan dari tinjauan sistematik ini adalahuntuk mengevaluasi efektivitas Palliative Home Care untuk pasien dengan HIV/AIDS terhadap nyeri,pengendalian gejala, meningkatkan kualitas hidup, meningkatkan kepuasan asuhan, dan efektivitas biaya.Pencarian awal terbatas dilakukan di MEDLINE dan CINAHL. Kedua database tersebut dipilih denganpertimbangan bahwa keduanya merupakan database terbesar di bidang kesehatan dan kedokteran. Kemudiastrategi pencarian lainnya dilakukan pada database lain meliputi: Cochrane Library, UpToDate, Ovid, AIDSCare, Journal of Palliative Care, dan Journal of Palliative Medicine. Studi yang diterbitkan dalam Bahasa Inggrisdan tahun 2000-2016 dipertimbangkan untuk dimasukkan dalam tinjauan ini. Data diekstrak oleh penulis dandiringkas menggunakan alat ekstraksi data dari JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute). Kami menemukan 4 studi yangmasuk kedalam kriteria tinjauan kami, satu studi randomizes control trial dan tiga studi prospectively control.Hasil dari tinjauan ini menunjukkan bahwa Palliative Home Care terbukti efektif dalam mengontol nyeridan gejala-gelaja lain, mempertahankan dan meningkatkan kualitas hidup pasien, tingginya kepuasan daripasien dan kelurga terhadap asuhan Palliative Home Care berkisar 93% - 96% dan lebih cost-effectivenessdibandingkan dengan Hospital-Based Palliative Care. Dengan demikian, penting untuk mengembangkanPalliative Home Care untuk pasien dengan HIV/AIDS terutama untuk negara dengan sumber daya yang terbatas.

Although palliative and end-of-life is a critical part of in-hospital medical care, residents often have very little formal education in this field. To determine the efficacy of a symptom management pocket card in improving the comfort level and knowledge of residents in delivering end-of-life care on medical clinical teaching units, we performed a controlled trial involving residents on three clinical teaching units. Residents at each site were given a 5-minute questionnaire at the start and at the end of their medicine ward rotation. Measures of self-reported comfort levels were assessed, as were 5 multiple-choice questions reflecting key knowledge areas in end-of-life care. Residents at all three sites were given didactic teaching sessions covering key concepts in palliative and end-of-life care over the course of their medicine ward rotation. Residents at the intervention site were also given a pocket card with information regarding symptom management in end-of-life care. Over 10 months, 137 residents participated on the three clinical teaching units. Comfort levels improved in both control (p < 0.01) and intervention groups (p < 0.01), but the intervention group was significantly more comfortable than the control group at the end of their rotations (z=2.77, p < 0.01). Knowledge was not significantly improved in the control group (p=0.07), but was significantly improved in the intervention group (p < 0.01). The knowledge difference between the two groups approached but did not reach statistical significance at the end of their rotation. In conclusion, our pocket card is a feasible, economical educational intervention that improves resident comfort level and knowledge in delivering end-of-life care on clinical teaching units. The economic crisis showed the weaknesses of the institutional system of the European Union, raising questions about its shape. The article aims to determine whether internal structures of the EU institutions and their modes of operation are chances or barriers for effective treaty implementation and the ability of institutions to face unexpected, difficult situations. The article focuses both on the formal structure of the institutions and their human resources. The article aims to conclude if the crisis may give impetus to a significant improvement in the EU institutional system.
