This experiment was designed to determine the effect of spent mushroom substrate, farmyard manure, and mineral fertilization with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium on the yield and quality of raw material obtained from two cultivars (“Słoneczko” and “De Dolj”) of common thyme. Unfertilized plots with thyme crops were included as the control treatment. Different row spacings (30 cm and 40 cm) represented the second experimental factor. The highest total yield of thyme raw material was found in the treatment with mineral NPK fertilization, but also in the treatments where spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and mineral NPK fertilization were applied at a ratio of 50:50%. Fertilization with SMS alone (100%) yielded smaller production effects, but they were higher than in the case of fertilization with manure. The high suitability of spent mushroom substrate applied alone or supplemented with mineral fertilization at different rates in spring was confirmed by the best quality parameters and antioxidant properties of the raw material. The use of a wider row spacing (40 cm) resulted in a higher yield of thyme raw material than in the case of a narrower one (30 cm). The narrower row spacing significantly positively affected some of the analyzed quality parameters of the harvested raw material, such as: essential oil content, polyphenol content, and antioxidant activity. The thyme cultivar “Słoneczko” proved to be absolutely more beneficial in terms of yield quantity and quality than the foreign cultivar “De Dolj”.

The purpose of the conducted study was to determine the effect of the applied organic and mineral fertilizer on the yield and the selected quality parameters of the obtained dried mass of Origanum vulgare L. A pot experiment was carried out involving two varieties of oregano (Aureum and Hot & Spicy), which were fertilized using organic and mineral fertilizer. The produced raw material underwent a drying process using the CPD-VMFD combination method, which involved convective pre-drying (40 °C and 0.8 m s−1) and vacuum-microwave finish drying at 240 W magnetron power. The resulting dry products were assessed in terms of color in CIE L * a * b * (Colour Ques spectrophotometer) and spectrophotometric analyses in order to determine the total content of polyphenols and antioxidant properties (ABTS and DPPH). Headspace solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) from the obtained products was carried out, and their composition was determined by gas chromatography (GC-MS). The organic fertilizers used have resulted in the production of dry oregano herbs with a much higher bioactive potential than that of the herbs treated with material fertilizer. This phenomenon could be recognized as an elicitation effect associated with the use of common nettle extract. The organically fertilized oregano also contained an increased carvacrol content in the headspace, which resulted in a more intense odor of the dry herbs. The use of organic fertilizers in the cultivation of Origanum vulgare L. contributes to the production of raw material for direct consumption and drying, which has a higher bioactive potential and better organoleptic properties.

In this paper we provide new data about the soil enzyme activity as a biological process, which is an indicator for impacts of factorial combinations of lime and fertilizers applications. Five plots divided into fifteen subplots were sampled for determination of the enzymatic indicators of soil quality, based on the actual and potential dehydrogenase and catalase activities. The research revealed that limed soil samples, in comparison with unlimed ones, resulted in significantly higher soil enzymatic activities (p[0.05) in the upper (0-20 cm), while in the deeper (20-40 cm) layer, only catalase activity was significantly higher (at least at p[0.02). Mineral fertilization, in comparison with its farmyard manuring, led to an insignificant increase in each of the three enzymatic activities determined, excepting catalase activity which was significantly higher (0.05]p]0.02) in the 0-20 cm layer. Based on the absolute values of the enzymatic activities, the enzymatic indicators of soil quality (EISQ) were calculated. The mineral NPK-fertilization and low dose of lime in the 0-20 cm layer, and mineral NP-fertilization and low dose of lime in the 20-40 cm layer proved to be the best variants of fertilization. The enzymatic indicators of soil quality in these variants reached the highest values: EISQ=0.821 and EISQ=0.889, respectively, indicating the presence of high enzymatic activities. It should be emphasized that a balanced application of lime, mineral fertilizers and farmyard manure leads to the formation of favorable conditions for the development of microorganisms, growth of plants and for an intense and lasting enzymatic activity.

There was grounded the expedience of using unconventional vegetable raw material, namely Pinus sylvestris needle that partially replaced hop for beer enrichment. The optimal parameters of extraction of Pinus sylvestris needle relative to anti-oxidant activity of extract: hydromodulus 1:20, temperature 60 ºС, extraction 30 min. The needle extract has pure smell, harmonic refreshing taste with needle note. The content of ascorbic acid in extraction is 0,275 mg / 100 g, antioxidant activity – 202,3 C/100 g. The quantitative ratio of hop and pine needle in beer receipt was determined by the way of mathematical modeling. Quantitative content of Pinus sylvestris needle is no more than 20 % by mass from the rated norm of hop that is enough for preserving hop bitterness and smell. The receipt of beer, including Pinus sylvestris needle, was elaborated. The quality parameters of ready drink were studied. The addition of needle increases the beer gustatory properties, decreases methanol content. The content of ascorbic acid in ready drink is 3,52 mg/100 g. Antioxidant activity of elaborated beer is 178,1 C/100 g that determines its high biological value. The influence of beer with needle extract on antioxidant system of organism of biological objects was assessed. Under conditions of acute pathological condition the beer with needle extract decreases oxidative influence of drink on brain of biological objects. The beer “Smaragd” decreases toxic effect on organism of living creature due to its antioxidant properties. The introduction of needle extract that includes vegetable antioxidants in beer is the one of the ways to increase antioxidant capacity of ready drink. It opens the prospect of studies, directed on elaboration of arrangements of stabilization of different sorts of beer. The studies may be introduced in production that has positive effect on ready product quality.

Effect of crop rotation and fertilization on quality of tomato cv. New Yorker was studied in field conditions in a long term, static experiment, conducted in Skierniewice since 1922. Tomatoes in crop rotation were cultivated on same field every third year. whereas these in monoculture were continuously cultivated on same field for 9 consecutive years (1980-1988). The fertilization treatments included: l) farmyard manure in rate of 40 t per hectare, annually, 2) mineral fertilization of 150 kg N. 100 kg P2O5 and 200 kg K2O per hectare, 3) farmyard manure plus mineral fertilization as in treatments 1 and 2 and, 4) mineral fertilization as in treatment 2 plus microelements in form of a multimineral, commercial fertilizer (Polichelat LS 7). Crop rotation had no significant influence on the content of soluble solids, colour and weight of fruits. However, tomato fruits from plants cultivated in rotation, as compared to those from monoculture, contained more organic acids and pectins, less nitrates, had lower pH and greater firmness. The effect of fertilization was similar in rotated and non-rotated cultivation. At combined manure and mineral NPK fertilization, tomato fruits showed higher content of soluble solids, organic acids and pectins than these from the other fertilization treatments. Fruits of plants fertilized with farmyard manure only had higher content of vitamin C and lower one of nitrates, soluble solids and organic acids and also lower firmness as compared these from other fertilization in trial.

In order to improve environmental sustainability of tomato cultivation and the quality of the harvested fruits, we tested (a) the digestate from anaerobic fermentation of buffalo slurries as partial replacing of NP fertilizers and (b) the biodegradable mulching to improve the nutrients and water availability for crop and to control weeds. In 2017–2018, a private farm of Campania region hosted a trial with four treatments deriving from the combination of two experimental factors: (1) fertilization strategy (standard farm NPK fertilization vs. digestate combined with reduced rates of NP fertilizers); (2) soil mulching (biodegradable mulching vs. no mulching). We measured fresh and dry aboveground biomass (fruits and stem + leaves), yields, fruits quality. Results pointed out: (1) combination of digestate with reduced rates of NP fertilizers did not decrease yields compared to complete mineral fertilization; (2) yields were improved in 2017 by synergic effects of soil mulching and combination of digestate and reduced rates of NP fertilizers; (3) in both the years, digestate combined with reduced rates of NP fertilizers and soil mulching determined the significant improving of fruits quality parameters interesting the processing industry, namely, fruit color, and firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity while antioxidant activity, contents of ascorbic acid, polyphenols, flavonoids, and lycopene showed responses variable with year or cultivar.

The study presents the effects of fertilisation on selected quality parameters of the dried material obtained from plants of lovage and coriander. During the crop production process, the plants were treated with two fertilisers containing substances potentially acting as elicitors. The dried material was obtained in course of a drying process carried out in optimum conditions and based on the CD-VMFD method which combines convective pre-drying (CD) at a low temperature (40 °C) with vacuum-microwave finish drying with the use of 240 W microwaves (VMFD). The quality of the dried material was evaluated through measurement of the total contents of polyphenols, total antioxidant potential (ABTS and DPPH method), and the profile of volatile compounds (headspace-solid phase microextractio-HS-SPME) as well as assessment of the colour. It was found that by applying first fertilisation (with organic components) it is possible to significantly increase the contents of both bioactive compounds and volatile substances responsible for the aroma. It was determined that the higher content of bioactive compounds was related to the composition of the first fertiliser, presumably the extract from common nettle. The study showed that the application of the first fertiliser contributed to enhanced quality parameters of the raw material obtained.

Salvia officinalis, known also as sage, is a medicinal plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family that spreads all over the word in several countries. The demand for the raw material and extracts of this plant is increasing due to its numerous applications in pharmacy, food and herbal tea production. The present study investigated for the first time the effect of 15, 30 and 45 cm intra-row spacing (plant density) on the main constituents of sage essential oils and rosmarinic acid content. The highest content of essential oils (2.7%) and rosmarinic acid (2.0%) were obtained in plants grown using 15 cm planting space. Likewise, close spacing resulted also in a substantial content of 1,8-cineole (47-50%, GC/FID; 55-60%, GC/MS). This work indicated that 1,8-cineole chemotype was a dominant character of cultivated S. officinalis in south of Jordan. In general, the percent of α-thujone in essential oil was not affected by intra-row spacing. However, the percent of β-thujone decreased from (2-3%, GC/MS) in plants grown using 15 cm intra-row spacing to (1-2%, GC/MS) in plants grown using 30 and 45 cm intra-row spacing. The highest content of α-and β-pinene was recorded in plants grown using 45 cm planting space (8-10%, GC/FID; 5-6% GC/MS). Based on GC/MS, camphor compound was enriched (9-10%) in sage plants grown under 15 cm spacing and greater than in plants grown under 30 (6-7%) or 45 cm (5-6%) spacing. The results make the potential use of sage extracts in the treatment of some human disorders or illness an area of further research.

In the years 2011–2014, winter wheat grain yield, qualitative and economic parameters were evaluated according to different fertiliser treatments: (1) control: unfertilised treatment; (2) farmyard manure (FYM) and (3) FYM + NPK (farmyard manure applied together with mineral NPK). The highest yields (8.10 t/ha) were recorded in the FYM + NPK treatment, while significantly lower yields (6.20 t/ha and 5.73 t/ha) were recorded in FYM and control treatments, respectively. Similarly, statistically significantly higher values of the quality parameters were found in the FYM + NPK treatment (13.55% of crude protein content and 43.56 mL of Zeleny’s sedimentation test), compared to control (10% and 22.44 mL, respectively). The modelling expert system (AGROTEKIS-Crop Technology and Economy) was used for the evaluation of economy. This software is based on technological methods of cultivation and norms of material input costs and costs of individual mechanised works. The economic benefits and profitability were evaluated for three different levels of grain market price. The highest gross profit per ha was recorded in the FYM + NPK treatment. According to the gross profit, the control treatment provided better results than the FYM treatment.
