Soilless growing systems can improve water-use efficiency, especially in closed soilless growing systems. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different transplanting conditions, and determine how supplying H2O2 as an oxygen source to the rhizosphere of strawberry plants in a soilless growing system affects plant growth, fruit yield and fruit quality. Strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) cv. ‘Fortuna’ were cultivated in 12 L pots filled with peat substrate, and maintained under conditions of natural light and temperature. Treated plants were supplied with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (H1) and control plants did not receive H2O2 (H0). In terms of the transplanting conditions, the plants were transplanted in October (T1), and either maintained in a culture chamber (T2), or refrigerated (T3), for one month, before being transplanted. A completely randomized block design with two treatment factors (transplanting conditions, and H2O2 treatment) and five replications was established. Then, we determined the fruit per plant, yield per plant (g plant−1), fruit weight (g fruit−1), fruit size (mm), SPAD values, crown number, crown diameter (mm), flower number, firmness (g cm−1), pH, total soluble solid (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) and TSS/TA. During the early crop cycle, there were not significant differences between treatment and the transplanting conditions that significantly affected the fruit weight and fruit size, although T3 produced the highest values. During the late crop cycle, the H2O2 treatment affected fruit per plant, yield per plant (g plant−1), and crown diameter, with H1 producing the highest values. Furthermore, the transplanting conditions affected yield per plant (g plant−1), old SPAD values, crown diameter, firmness, TSS, TA and TSS/TA.

The present studies were carried out in Experimental Block, Department of Fruit Science, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) during the year 2015-16. Nine years old trees of uniform size and vigour planted at 4.0 x 2.0 m spacing were selected for the studies. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 11 treatments. The maximum increased in fruit set (87.70%) and yield (20.16 kg/tree) were observed significantly higher under 75% RDF + vermicompost 15 kg/tree. Maximum fruit length (64.06 mm), breadth (61.89 mm), fruit weight (129.51 g), total soluble solids (13.33 ºB) and total sugars (7.51%) were recorded under 75% RDF + vermicompost 15 kg/tree, however, highest fruit firmness (6.56 kg/cm2) and lowest titratable acidity (0.50%) were found with 4 applications of jeevamrut.

ABSTRACT At present, Brazil is among the world's largest tomato producers. This production is directed both for the industry and for fresh consumption. Among the different tomato groups, production of mini-tomatoes has grown in recent years because of their high commercial value and mainly greater price stability. However, there are few studies investigating the proper management of this group, as it is recent in the country. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the viability of mini-tomato hybrids in different training systems, in greenhouse conditions. The experiment was set as a randomized block design in a 2×2×4 factorial arrangement with two numbers of stems (one and two stems per plant), two training systems [conventional (vertical) and horizontal], and four hybrids [AF 18196 (Sakata Seed); AF 13106 (Sakata Seed); Nina (Takii Seed) and Cocktail Mascot (Agristar/Top Seed Premium)], with three replicates and four plants per plot in the usable area. The evaluated variables were production per plant, fruit weight, transverse and longitudinal fruit diameter, number of fruits per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of fruits per cluster, precocity, production cycle, chlorophyll index, soluble solids, and crop cycle. The most promising hybrids are AF 13106 (2.71 kg/plant), AF 18196 (2.63 kg/plant) and Mascot (2.38 kg/plant), managed with two stems (2.63 kg/plant), in the vertical system (2.94 kg/plant).

Fertilization outside the season of Siam Orange (Citrus microcarpa L.) with Induction of Flowering and Dormancy Breaking Substances. The Siam orange (Citrus microcarpa L.) produces seasonal fruit with the on-season harvest from July to August while the off-season harvest, i.e. from February to September there is hardly any fruit, or very limited supply. The purpose of this study was to examine the response of flowering induction and dormancy-breaking substances to produce off-season fruits of Siam orange. This research began in April to December 2016. The experiment was arranged factorially with two factors using a randomized block design (RBD), with nine combination treatments and six replications. Flowering induction factors consist of three levels, namely Ik = Control, IP = Paclobutrazol at a dose of 7.5 g/l, and Im = cutting the tip of dormant twigs. Dormancy-breaking substances factor consists of three levels, namely Dk = Control, Db = BAP 200 ppm, and Dn = KNO3 300 ppm. The results of the experiment showed that the highest fruit weight per tree at off-season production was obtained by induction with paklobutrazol (28.86 kg) and the lowest was in control (12.75 kg). Flowering induction treatments was not significantly different effect on fruit quality of Siam orange, represented by weight per fruits, fruit diemater, total soluble solid and vitamine C content was not siginificant different among levels of treatment. Dormancy-breaking substances treatment also not significantly effect on fruit quality of Siam orange. Based on this research it is recommended to induce flower for off-season produce of Siam orange by pruning the tips of dormant twigs or by using paklobutrzol.

Fig production and quality are associated with the number of branches per plant and may vary among regions according to the climatic conditions and crop management. In this work, we studied the influence of the number of branches per plant on the production and fruit quality of 'Roxo de Valinhos' figs under semiarid conditions. The experiment was carried out at the didactic orchard of Federal Rural University of Semiarid (UFERSA), Mossoró city, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. Fig plants were grown with 6, 12, 18, or 30 branches in a completely randomized block design with four replicates and four plants per plot. Plants without thinning were also cultivated as controls. The number of fruits per plant, productivity, fruit length, fruit diameter, and fruit weight were evaluated. Additionally, fruit firmness, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids content (SS), maturation index (SSC/TA), and vitamin C content were analyzed. The results showed that plants cultivated with 12, 18, and 24 branches produced fruits with higher weight, more fruits per branch, and more fruits per plant and thus were more productive. Additionally, fruits showed a high vitamin C content and maturation index

Abstract The objective of this study was to assess the effect of planting densities, irrigation levels and bunch trimming on yield, fruit grading and water-use efficiency (WUE) of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants. The following factors were combined in a randomized block design: three irrigation levels (IL), 50, 75 and 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc); four planting densities (PD)- 1,666; 2,083; 2,666 and 3,333 plants ha-1; and two bunch trimming treatments (BT), removal of either one or two hands from the bunch. The treatments were arranged in a split-split plot design. Irrigation level was assigned to main plots, PD to subplots and BT to sub-subplots, with four replicates. Measurements were made in the first production cycle. Removing two hands increased number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index, fruit weight, fruit diameter, total hand weight and mean hand weight of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants. A plant density population of 3,333 plants ha-1 combined with an irrigation level at 75% ETc improves plant development and yield while maintaining fruit size and saving water, regardless of removal of one or two hands from the bunch.

A total of 25 indigenous lines collected from different agroclimatic zones of Jharkhand were evaluated at Ranchi during rabi season of 2018-19 in randomized block design with three replications. The aim of present study was to assess the extent of genetic variation and identify most promising germplasm for improvement programme. Seventeen quantitative and forty qualitative characters were analysed as per DUS guidelines. Significant differences were recorded in most of the characters. The genotype RKML-11 exhibited highest number of primary branches (6.67) and produced maximum yield (38.54 t ha-1). Maximum fruit weight was recorded in RKML-28 (262.8 g). RKML-35 showed maximum value of fruit diameter (33.9 cm) but had minimum number of fruits per plant (6.7). However, RKML-21 showed maximum fruits per plant but had smallest fruit size (8 cm). RKML-26 exhibited precocious bearing habit, it was also second-best genotype in terms of yield (37.7 t ha-1). The lowest yield was recorded in the genotype RKML-25 (8.8 t ha-1). These accessions could be used as potential donors for hybridization program to develop high heterotic hybrids.

<p>Ketersediaan varietas baru melon yang sesuai dengan permintaan konsumen akan membuat komoditas ini lebih berharga sehingga dapat meningkatkan pendapatan petani. Secara umum, karakteristik melon yang diinginkan adalah manis, renyah, beraroma kuat, kulitnya berjala, dan tahan simpan. Sampai saat ini ada dua kandidat melon hibrida yang sedang dievaluasi. Pada tahun 2012 dilakukan uji penanaman dua calon varietas melon tersebut. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk melakukan evaluasi dua calon varietas unggul baru (genotipe MB1 dan MB2) di tiga lokasi tanam dan juga untuk memperoleh calon varietas melon baru. Penelitian dilakukan di Kebun Percobaan Sumani (Solok, Sumatera Barat), Subang (Jawa Barat), dan Banyuwangi (Jawa Timur). Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak kelompok dengan empat perlakuan, yaitu dua calon hibrida: 86H (MB1) dan 78M (MB2) dan dua varietas pembanding (Tropika dan Glamour), dengan enam ulangan. Setiap unit perlakuan terdiri dari 30 tanaman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat interaksi nyata antara genotipe x lingkungan terhadap karakter berat buah dan total padatan terlarut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada karakter berat buah dan total padatan terlarut, genotipe 86H/MB1 memiliki koefisien regresi (βi) &gt; 1, artinya genotipe memiliki stabilitas di bawah rerata (mempunyai daya adaptabilitas spesifik pada suatu lingkungan yang menguntungkan), sebaliknya untuk genotipe 78M/MB2 memiliki koefisien regresi (βi) &lt; 1, yang berarti genotipe 78M/MB2 mempunyai stabilitas di atas rerata (tidak responsif terhadap perubahan lingkungan). Berdasarkan hasil pengujian di tiga lokasi diperoleh informasi berat buah semua aksesi tertinggi pada lokasi tanam Banyuwangi, yaitu genotipe 86H/MB1 dengan berat 2,35 kg, Tropika 2,68 kg, genotipe 78M/MB2 2,05 kg, dan Glamour 2,21 kg, TSS buah pada lokasi tanam Sumani, yaitu genotipe 86 H/MB1 dengan TSS 12,47ºBrix, Tropika 11,71ºBrix, genotipe 78 M/MB2 12,88ºBrix, dan Glamour 11,89ºBrix, sedangkan persentase jaring kulit melon genotipe MB1 lokasi Sumani adalah 86% dan Banyuwangi adalah 88,67% dengan tekstur jala halus, sedikit di bawah dari pembanding Tropika 89,5% dan Glamour 89%.</p><p>The availability of new varieties of melon that suitable to the consumers demand will lead this commodity more marketable so that can increase farmers’ income. In general, expected characteristics of melon are sweet, crisp, strong-scented, rind nets, and long shelf-life. There are two candidates of melon hybrid that are being evaluated. The evaluation test of two candidates of melon varieties has been done in 2012. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the two candidates of new varieties (MB1 and MB2 genotype) in three planting locations and to obtain new candidate of melon varieties. The research was conducted in Sumani (Solok, West Sumatera), Subang (West Java), and Banyuwangi (East Java). A randomized block design was used in this experiment with four treatments [two hybrid melon candidates: 86H (MB1) and 78M (MB2)] and two other melon varieties (Tropika and Glamour) as comparator, and each treatment was replicated six times. Each experimental unit consisted of 30 plants. The result showed that there were interaction between location and genotypes on the weight and total soluble solid (TSS) characters. Fruit weight character and total soluble solid of 86H/MB1 genotype had regression coefficient (βi) &gt; 1, it mean that genotype had below average stability, while 78M/MB2 genotype had regression coefficient (βi) &lt; 1, that mean genotype above average stability. Based on test results in three locations obtained information accession with highest weight on the planting location in Banyuwangi namely genotype 86 H/MB1 2.35 kg, Tropika 2.68 kg, genotype 78M/MB2 2.05 kg and Glamour 2.21 kg. The highest TSS fruit on planting location Sumani namely genotype 86H/MB1 with TSSºBrix 12.47, Tropical 11.71ºBrix, genotype 78M/MB2 12.88ºBrix, and Glamour 11.89ºBrix. Furthermore, the net percentage of skin melon genotype MB1 on Sumani location is 86% and Banyuwangi is 88.67% with net texture smooth, slightly below of varieties Tropika 89,5% and Glamor 89%.</p>

Aims: Fig plants produce fruits in branches of the year, which grow after emission of buds from the leaf armpits. And the lopping system is one of the most common practices among the green fig farmers to increase production. Thus, the present work aimed to improve the physical, chemical and productive characteristics of fig trees in the semiarid region of Brazil. Study Design: A complete randomized block design was used in a 3x2 factorial scheme (three pruning intensities: 5, 10 and 15 cm in length; and two lopping systems: with and without lopping), constituting six treatments with four replicates. Each experimental plot consisted of five plants, but only the three central plants were used. Place and Duration of Study: The experiment was conducted in the didactic orchard of the Federal Rural University of Semiarid (UFERSA), Mossoró, RN. Methodology: The treatments were: 5 cm pruning without lopping; 5 cm pruning with lopping; 10 cm pruning without lopping; 10 cm pruning with lopping; 15 cm pruning without lopping; 15 cm pruning with lopping. The following variables were analyzed: fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), pulp firmness (N), soluble solids content (ºBrix), titratable acidity (%), vitamin C content (mg ascorbic acid 100 g-1 pulp), fruit yield (number of fruits plant-1 and kg plant-1). Data were submitted to analysis of variance by the F test at 5% probability and means were grouped using the Tukey test at 5% probability. The analysis was performed using R software version 3.5.2. Conclusion: Pruning intensity 10 cm in length and the use of lopping system influenced the physical, chemical and productive characteristics of fig plants in the Brazilian semiarid region.

ABSTRACT Tomatoes are an important component of the human diet because they are rich in minerals and antioxidants that sequester free radicals in cells, preventing various disorders that affect human health. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen sources and concentrations on antioxidant capacity and physical and chemical quality of tomato fruit. The experiment was conducted in Vitória da Conquista, state of Bahia, Brazil, in the experimental field of Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia. The experimental setup included a randomized block design with four replicates in a factorial layout of 3 × 3 + 1 (control), for a total of 40 plots. The three treatments comprised different nitrogen sources (calcium nitrate, urea, and ammonium sulfate), applied in three doses (140, 280, and 420 kg ha-1). We evaluated firmness, pH, titratable acidity - TA, soluble solid - SS, SS/TA ratio, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and DPPH inhibition, were evaluated after samples were harvested. However, increasing concentrations of N adversely affected the acidity and led to an increase in the SS/TA ratio. Increasing the N concentration also reduced the content of bioactive compounds. excluding carotenoids, which consequently impaired antioxidant activity.

The objective of this study was to estimate the coefficient of repeatability and the number of measurements required for production and quality variables in a strawberry crop. An experiment was conducted with two strawberry cultivars from two origins grown in four substrate mixtures, totaling 16 treatments, evaluated in a randomized block design with four replications. Mass (MF) and number (NF) of fruits per plant were evaluated as measures of production, and total soluble solids (SST), titratable acidity (AT) and firmness (FIR) of fruits during the crop cycle were evaluated as measures of quality. Subsequently, the repeatability coefficient was estimated by the following methods: analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis using a correlation matrix (PCcor), principal component analysis using a variance-covariance matrix (PCcov) and structural analysis (SA). The number of measurements was adjusted for each studied variable based on determination coefficients of 0.80, 0.85, 0.90, and 0.95. The repeatability coefficients ranged from low to medium. The ANOVA method gave the lowest r values, while the PCcov method presented the highest values of r. When using the PCcov method, 3.6, 2.9, 6.2, 3.2, and 3.8 measurements were needed to reach 80% confidence for the variables MF, NF, SST, AT, and FIR, respectively, and this increased to 7.3, 14.0, 29.6, 15.4, and 18.1 for 95% confidence in the results for MF, NF, SST, AT, and FIR, respectively.
