Hailstorms are typically localized events, and very little is known about their effect on crops. The objective of this study was to examine the physiological and vine performance responses to natural hail, registered four weeks after full bloom, of field-grown Thompson seedless (Vitis vinifera L.) grapevines, one of the most important table grape varieties cultivated in Greece and especially in the Corinthian region in northeastern Peloponnese. Leaf gas exchange, vegetative growth, vine balance indices, cane wood reserves, yield components, and fruit chemical composition were recorded from hail-damaged vines and compared with control vines. Visibly, the extent of the hailstorm damage was great enough to injure or remove leaves as well as cause partial stem bruising and partial injury or total cracking of berries. Our results indicated that natural hail did not affect leaf photosynthesis, berry weight, total acidity, and cane wood reserves but significantly reduced the total leaf area, yield, and the total phenolics of berries at harvest. At the same time, hail-damaged vines increased the leaf area of lateral canes and presented a higher total soluble solid (TSS) accumulation, while no effect on the next year’s fertility was registered. The present work is the first attempt to enhance our understanding of the vegetative yield, berry quality, and physiological responses of grapevines to natural hail, which is an extreme and complex natural phenomenon that is likely to increase due to climate change.

В статье дан обзор современного состояния и тенденциозного развития виноградарской отрасли Афганистана. Виноград выращивается практически в каждой части страны, от Кандагара до Такара и Фарьяба. Наиболее интенсивно виноград возделывают в провинциях Кабул, Парван, Каписа, Кандагар, Гильменд, Джавзян, Герат и Газни. Но в большинстве районов страны культура выращивается не для коммерческого использования, а для семейного потребления. В основном весь виноград Афганистана принадлежит к подвиду Vitis vinifera sativa D.C.. В стране в наличии большое разнообразие доступных сортов (более 100), но самыми распространёнными являются три местных сорта столового направления использования: Шиндохани, Кишмиш белый и Тайфи розовый. При этом сорта Шиндохани и Кишмиш белый еще используются для приготовления изюма. К другим распространенным сортам винограда относятся Хусайне, Аскери, Голадан, Спен Манга, Надери и Бедана Кишмиш сиах (черный без косточек). Также вводятся в производство такие новые коммерческие сорта как Thompson Seedless, Red Globe, Cardinal, Emperor, Fantasy, Crimson Seedless, Flame Seedless, Ruby, Ribier и Black Emerald. В экспорте Афганистана виноград занимает 4%. В Афганистане виноградная лоза в основном возделывается по местной традиционной системе - на земляных курганах с головчатой формировкой. Используется также система «земля-решетчатая». Производственная система виноградарства Афганистана, его культурные практики, сортимент и послеуборочный процесс все еще традиционны. Поэтому для достижения более высоких результатов необходимо ориентироваться на международные стандарты качества, импортировать и распространять новые технологии, координировать процесс между всеми производителями виноградной продукции, повышать их грамотность.The article provides an overview of modern condition and development trends of the viticulture industry in Afghanistan. Grapes are cultivated in almost every part of the country, from the south to Kandahar and to the north to Takar and Faryaba. The most intensive cultivation areas are the provinces Kabul, Parvan, Kapisa, Kandahar, Helmand, Javzyan, Herat and Ghazni. In most parts of the country, grapes are grown not for commercial use but for family consumption. Most of grape varieties in Afghanistan belong to Vitis vinifera sativa D.C. The country has a wide range of available varieties (more than 100), but the most common are three local varieties: ‘Shindokhani’, ‘Kishmishi bely’ and ‘Typhi rozovy’. These are table varieties. At the same time, ‘Shindokhani’ and ‘Kishmishi bely’ are also used for raisin production. Other common grape varieties are ‘Hussaini’, ‘Askari’, ‘Goladan’, ‘Spen Manga’, ‘Naderi’ and ‘Bedana Kishmishi siah’ (black seedless). New commercial varieties ‘Thompson Seedless’, ‘Red Globe’, ‘Cardinal’, ‘Emperor’, ‘Fantasy’, ‘Crimson Seedless’, ‘Flame Seedless’, ‘Ruby’, ‘Ribier’ and ‘Black Emerald’ are being introduced into cultivation, too. Grapes account for 4% of the country’s total exports. In Afghanistan, grapes are mainly cultivated according to the local traditional system on mounds of earth with head training. ‘Earth-lattice’ trellis is also used. In Afghanistan, grape production, cultural practices, assortment and post-harvest process are still traditional. Therefore, to achieve better results, it is necessary to focus on international quality standards, to import and disseminate new technologies, to coordinate the process with all producers of grape products, and to increase their professional skills.

Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is globally cultivated as commercial fruit crop usually used for fruit purpose or industrial product. The objective of the current review is to review and identify the research gap on the effect of different growth media and vitrification on shooting and rooting performance of grape. Factors affecting rooting of grape cuttings can be internal or external factors. Currently, grapevines are very sensitive to disease in the conventional method of propagation. Even if tissue culture is recommended for healthy propagation of the grape varieties, still factors affecting the growth of the plant verifications were reported. This, review paper progressively revised for the existing factors and possible solutions during in vitro propagation of grapevines. Int. J. Agril. Res. Innov. Tech. 10(1): 1-5, June 2020

Developing adaptation strategies in Vitis vinifera, a crop sensitive to climate change, is crucial for resilience of traditional viticultural systems, especially in climate-vulnerable areas like the Mediterranean basin. A progressive warming is demonstrated to alter the geographical distribution of grapevine, reducing land capability for typical grapes and vine productions in most Southern European districts traditionally specialized in tree crops. Grapevine growth and reproduction under climate change require a continuous monitoring to adapt agronomic practices and strategies to global change. The present study illustrates an empirical approach grounded on a set of bio-physical indicators assessing the genotype-related response to climate variation. This approach was tested in Umbria, central Italy, to verify the response of some major international and local grapevine varieties to climate variation during a relatively long time interval (1995–2015). Long-term data for ripening time and berry quality collected in the study area were correlated to representative bioclimatic indices including Winkler, Huglin, and Cool night indicators. Results of this study highlighted the increase of air temperature (reflecting the inherent growth in thermal availability for maturation) and the alteration of precipitation patterns toward more intense precipitation. Climate variability exerted distinctive impacts on grapevine phenology depending on the related genotype. Empirical findings underline the usefulness of a permanent field monitoring of the relationship between selected climate variables and grape ripening with the aim to develop adaptive viticultural practices at farm’s scale.

The aim of this study was to compare the natural variability of the expression of class I chitinase gene in grapes of Vitis vinifera L. varieties as well as investigate their antimicrobial activity. Further, the effect of antimicrobial activity in chitinase expression was analyzed. Matured berries of thirteen grape varieties were used in the study—Alibernet, Dornfelder, Cabernet Sauvignon, Blaufränkisch, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Weisser Riesling, Irsai Oliver, Pinot Blanc, Pálava, Müller-Thurgau, Grűner Veltliner, and Feteasca Regala, grown in the Small Carpathians wine region of Slovakia, Vrbové. Chitinase I gene expression was found to be similar in most of the analyzed varieties with the except of two varieties, where the expression of chitinase I was significantly higher—Pinot Blanc and Savignon Blanc. By comparing the varieties between the lowest and highest expression fold change, they were statistically different in the level of its chitinase I gene expression. Grape pomace extracts of analyzed Vitis vinifera L. were effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts, but a weak correlation tendency was found between chitinase I gene expression and antimicrobial activity, only against Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus, Candida albicans, and Candida glabrata.

Leaf removal is a viticultural practice applied in order to improve fruit-zone microclimate and berry quality. The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effect of post-flowering leaf removal on maturation and biosynthesis of terpenes and and C13-norisoprenoids in Ribolla Gialla grapes. In the seasons 2015 and 2016, basic maturation parameters were nearly unaffected by leaf removal. Contrarily, in the second season, 2016, one week before harvest, the concentration of several aroma compounds was significantly improved by leaf removal. In conclusion, the trial here showed that leaf removal improves the concentration of aroma compounds in the grapes, but the selection of the date of harvest is more crucial in order to maintain them during vinification.
