Global raptor conservation relies on humans to establish and improve interaction and coexistence. Human–wildlife interaction research is well-established, but tends to focus on large-bodied, terrestrial mammals. The scope and characteristics of research that explores human–raptor interactions are relatively unknown. As an initial step toward quantifying and characterizing the state of applied, cross-disciplinary literature on human–raptor interactions, we use established systematic map (scoping reviews) protocols to catalog literature and describe trends, identify gaps and biases, and critically reflect on the scope of research. We focus on the peer-reviewed (refereed) literature germane to human–raptor interaction, conflict, tolerance, acceptance, persecution and coexistence. Based on 383 papers retrieved that fit our criteria, we identified trends, biases, and gaps. These include a majority of research taking place within North America and Europe; disproportionately few interdisciplinary and social research studies; interactions focused on indirect anthropogenic mortality; and vague calls for human behavior changes, with few concrete steps suggested, when management objectives are discussed. Overall, we note a predominant focus on the study of ecological effects from human–raptor interactions rather than sociocultural causes, and suggest (as others have in various conservation contexts) the imperative of human behavioral, cultural, and political inquiry to conserve raptor species.

AbstractA central goal of studying host-pathogen interaction research is to understand how the host and pathogen manipulate each other to promote their own fitness in a pathosystem. Co-transcriptomic approaches can simultaneously analyze dual transcriptomes during infection and provide a systematic map of the cross-kingdom communication between two species. Here we used the Arabidopsis-B. cinerea pathosystem to test how plant host and fungal pathogen interaction at the transcriptomic level during infection. We assessed the impact of natural genetic diversity in the pathogen and plant host by utilization of a collection of 96 isolates of B. cinerea infection on Arabidopsis wild-type and two mutants with jasmonate or salicylic acid compromised immunities. We identified ten B. cinerea gene co-expression networks (GCNs) that encode known or novel virulence mechanisms. We constructed a dual interaction network by combining four host-and ten pathogen-GCNs into a single network, which revealed potential connections between the fungal and plant GCNs involving both novel and conserved mechanisms. These co-transcriptome data shed lights on the potential mechanisms underlying host-pathogen interaction and illustrate the continued need for advancements of in planta analysis of dual-species dynamics.

<span lang="EN">The rise of Internet access, social media and availability of smart phones intensify the epidemic of pornography addiction especially among younger teenagers. Such scenario may offer many side effects to the individual such as alteration of the behavior, changes in moral value and rejection to normal community convention. Hence, it is imperative to detect pornography addiction as early as possible. In this paper, a method of using brain signal from frontal area captured using EEG is proposed to detect whether the participant may have porn addiction or otherwise. It acts as a complementary approach to common psychological questionnaire. Experimental results show that the addicted participants had low alpha waves activity in the frontal brain region compared to non-addicted participants. It can be observed using power spectra computed using Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA). The theta band also show there is disparity between addicted and non-addicted. However, the distinction is not as obvious as alpha band. Subsequently, more work need to be conducted to further test the validity of the hypothesis. It is envisaged that with more participants and further investigation, the proposed method will be the initial step to groundbreaking way of understanding the way porn addiction affects the brain.</span>

BACKGROUND Sixty-nine million people suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year and TBI is the most common cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Traumatic SAH has been described as an adverse prognostic factor leading to progressive neurological deterioration and an increase in morbidity and mortality, but there are a limited number of studies which evaluate recent trends in the diagnostic and management of SAH in the context of trauma. OBJECTIVE The objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to the diagnostic criteria and management of traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. METHODS This scoping review will be conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology for scoping reviews. A three-step search strategy (initial limited search in PubMed and Scopus databases, a main search of EMBASE, Web of Science, EBSCO, MEDLINE, and manual searches of reference lists of included articles) will be utilized. The search will be limited to studies with human participants and published in English, Spanish, and French between 2005-2020. This review will consider studies of adolescent and adult patients who have suffered from SAH secondary to trauma. Study selection will be performed by two authors in a two-phase process; if any disagreement arises, a third author will be consulted. Data to be extracted from each study will include population, intervention, comparator and outcome measures and a summary of findings. Citation screening, full-text review, risk of bias assessment, and extraction of study characteristics and outcomes will be carried out using a web-based software platform that streamlines the production of scoping reviews. RESULTS Ethics approval is not required for this systematic review, as there will be no patient involvement. The search for this systematic review commenced in December 2020, and we expect to publish the findings in early 2021. The plan for dissemination is to publish review findings in a peer-reviewed journal and present findings at conferences that engage the most pertinent stakeholders. CONCLUSIONS This scoping review will serve as an initial step in providing more evidence for healthcare professionals, economists and policymakers in order that they might devote more resources towards this significant problem affecting both health and economic outcomes worldwide.

Numerous phenomenological descriptions of the mechanical behavior of composite materials have been developed. There is now an urgent need to study and interpret deformation behavior, load transfer, and strain distribution, in terms of micromechanisms at the atomic level. One approach is to characterize dislocation substructure resulting from specific test conditions by the various techniques of transmission electron microscopy. The present paper describes a technique for the preparation of electron transparent composites of aluminum-stainless steel, such that examination of the matrix-fiber (wire), or interfacial region is possible. Dislocation substructures are currently under examination following tensile, compressive, and creep loading. The technique complements and extends the one other study in this area by Hancock.The composite examined was hot-pressed (argon atmosphere) 99.99% aluminum reinforced with 15% volume fraction stainless steel wire (0.006″ dia.).Foils were prepared so that the stainless steel wires run longitudinally in the plane of the specimen i.e. the electron beam is perpendicular to the axes of the wires. The initial step involves cutting slices ∼0.040″ in thickness on a diamond slitting wheel.

The use of fast-freeze fixation (FFF) followed by freeze-substitution (FS) brings substantial advantages which are due to the extreme rapidity of this fixation compared to the conventional one. The initial step, FFF, physically immobilizes most molecules and therefore arrests the biological reactions in a matter of milliseconds. The second step, FS, slowly removes the water content still in solid state and, at the same time, chemically fixes the other cell components in absence of external water. This procedure results in an excellent preservation of the ultrastructure, avoids osmotic artifacts,maintains in situ most soluble substances and keeps up a number of cell activities including antigenicities. Another point of interest is that the rapidity of the initial immobilization enables the capture of unstable structures which, otherwise, would slip towards a more stable state. When combined with electrophysiology, this technique arrests the ultrastructural modifications at a well defined state, allowing a precise timing of the events.We studied the epithelium of the elytra of the scale-worm, Harmothoe lunulata which has excitable, conductible and bioluminescent properties. The intracellular sites of the light emission are paracrystals of endoplasmic reticulum (PER), named photosomes (Fig.1). They are able to flash only when they are coupled with plasma membrane infoldings by dyadic or triadic junctions (Fig.2) basically similar to those of the striated muscle fibers. We have studied them before, during and after stimulation. FFF-FS showed that these complexes are labile structures able to diffentiate and dedifferentiate within milliseconds. Moreover, a transient network of endoplasmic reticulum was captured which we have named intermediate endoplasmic reticulum (IER) surrounding the PER (Fig.1). Numerous gap junctions are found in the membranous infoldings of the junctional complexes (Fig.3). When cryofractured, they cleave unusually (Fig.4-5). It is tempting to suggest that they play an important role in the conduction of the excitation.

Shared decision-making (SDM), a component of patient-centered care, is the process in which the clinician and patient both participate in decision-making about treatment; information is shared between the parties and both agree with the decision. Shared decision-making is appropriate for health care conditions in which there is more than one evidence-based treatment or management option that have different benefits and risks. The patient's involvement ensures that the decisions regarding treatment are sensitive to the patient's values and preferences. Audiologic rehabilitation requires substantial behavior changes on the part of patients and includes benefits to their communication as well as compromises and potential risks. This article identifies the importance of shared decision-making in audiologic rehabilitation and the changes required to implement it effectively.
