Piano tuning is known to be difficult because the stiffness of piano strings causes the tones produced to be inharmonic. Aural tuning is time consuming and requires the help of a professional. This motivates the question of whether this process can be automated. Attempts at automatic tuning are usually assessed by comparing the Railsback curve of the results with the curve of a professional tuner. In this paper we determine a simple and reliable rule for tuning the high tones of a piano with the help of a listening test. This rule consists of matching the two tones in an octave interval so that the first partial frequency of the upper tone becomes exactly the same as the second partial frequency of the lower tone. This rule was rated best among four tuning rules that were compared in the test. The results found are explained using a beat-based analysis, and are consistent with some previous studies. They are also tested against the existing method of using Railsback curves, and it is shown that comparison using Railsback curves is an unreliable method of assessing different tunings. The findings from this paper can be used to create a complete automatic tuner that could make the process of piano tuning quick and inexpensive.

AbstractWe have improved previous model calculations of the prominence-corona transition region including the effect of the ambipolar diffusion in the statistical equilibrium and energy balance equations. We show its influence on the different parameters that characterize the resulting prominence theoretical structure. We take into account the effect of the partial frequency redistribution (PRD) in the line profiles and total intensities calculations.

The effect of partial frequency redistribution in the formation of Lyman α in the chromosphere has been discussed by Milkey and Mihalas (1973) and others, and it has been shown that in this case the coherency of scattering in the wings of the line substantially influences the line profile. Although there are non-negligible sources for La photons within a prominence, a large fraction of the emergent line photons are due to scattering of photons incident on the surface of the prominence so that one expects that in a prominence the frequency redistribution processes will play an important role in determining the emergent intensity.

Patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have frequently been found to suffer from damage to callosal fibers. Investigations have shown that this damage is associated with signs of hemisphere disconnections. The aim of our study was to provide evidence for the first signs of interhemispheric dysfunction in a mildly disabled MS population. Therefore, we explored whether the Interhemispheric Transfer (IT) deficit is multi-modal and sought to differentiate two MS evolution forms, on the basis of an interhemispheric disconnection index. Twenty-two patients with relapsing-remitting form of MS (RRMS) and 14 chronic-progressive (CPMS) were compared with matched controls on four tasks: a tachistoscopic verbal and non-verbal decision task, a dichotic listening test, cross tactile finger localization and motor tapping. No overall impairment was seen. The dichotic listening and lexical decision tasks were the most sensitive to MS. In addition, CPMS patients' IT was more impaired and was related to the severity of neurological impairment. The different sizes of the callosal fibers, which determine their vulnerability, may explain the heterogeneity of transfer through the Corpus Callosum. Therefore, evaluation of IT may be of value as an index of evolution in MS.

SummaryPurpose: Comparison of qualitative and quantitative sonography with the lymphoscintigraphic function test and clinical findings in legs. Patients, methods: In 33 patients a lymphoscintigraphic function test of legs combined with measurement of lymph node uptake was performed and subsequently compared with sonography. Sonographic criteria were: Thickness of cutis, thickness of subcutanean fatty tissue and presence of liquid structures or fine disperse tissue structure of lower limbs, foots and toes. Results: In 51 legs uptake values lie in the pathologic area, in four legs in the grey area and in ten legs in the normal area. The cutis thickness in the lower leg shows no significant correlation with the uptake. The determination of the thickness of the subcutanean fatty tissue of the lower leg and of the cutis thickness of the feet turned out to be an unreliable method. In 47% of the medial lower legs and in 57% of the lateral lower legs with clinical lymphoedema sonography is falsely negative. Conclusion: Early lymphoedema is only detectable with the lymphoscintigraphic function test. In the case of clinical lymphoedema clinical examination is more reliable than sonography.

ABSTRACT A retrospective investigation was made of contraception in diabetic women delivered in our department in 1969 and 1970. Seventy-nine (69 per cent) answered the questionnaires. About one third had found the contraceptive instruction insufficient. A shift from conventional to intrauterine contraception and sterilization was seen, but nearly 25% of the patients were still using conventional methods, mainly the condom. The patients consider this an unreliable method. Thirty-three patients were using intrauterine contraception. Although 10 of them had bleeding irregularities, all were satisfied with the method. Sterilization had been performed on 17 patients, all of whom were fully satisfied and had experienced no side effects. Four of 11 insulin-requiring diabetics, who have used combined oestrogen-progesterone medication have had difficulties in the regulation of the diabetes. Of 24 unwanted pregnancies 12 occurred since the hospitalization in 1969 and 1970. In diabetic women the contraceptive method should either be sterilization, intrauterine device or low dose progestagens, and only in a few cases conventional. A thorough contraceptive instruction as well as a close control of the diabetic women are of importance in order to avoid unplanned pregnancy. The best way to achieve this is by having an out-patient clinic in connection with the obstetrical department to supervise contraception in all diabetic women in the area.

This study reports a pre-experimental research on the impact of metacognitive instruction on EFL learners’ metacognitive awareness and their listening performance. To obtain the goal of the study, a group of 30 Iranian intermediate EFL learners, including 14 males and 16 females, were selected randomly. Their ages range from 20 to 24. The participants took part in 16 weeks’ intervention program based on metacognitive pedagogical sequence consisted of five stages. The metacognitive awareness listening questionnaire (MALQ), and a listening test were also used to find changes in metacognitive awareness and listening performance before and after the treatment. The results of comparing pre and posttests scores revealed that metacognitive instruction raised the learners’ metacognitive awareness and helped them improve their listening comprehension ability.

The aim of this research was to improve students listening comprehension by using Bottom-Up technique. This research is a classroom action research which has done in three cycles. The subject for this research was the tenth grade students in class X TAV. The research was conducted by using Bottom-Up technique which consists of three main stages. There are word processing, phrase processing, and comprehension. The researcher observed students improvement in listening comprehension by collecting data through field notes, observation checklist and listening test. Field note and observation checklist were used to gather the students attitude in learning process. The data of listening was collected through listening test and it was assessed through scoring rubric. The result showed that students problems in understanding the contents of listening and vocabulary had been solved by using Bottom-Up technique. In the first cycle, the students mean score was 76.7. It increased in the second cycle to 82.1, and 83.7 in third cycle. As the conclusion, the technique was able to be used in improving students listening comprehension. The researcher recommends the teacher to use Bottom-Up technique as a technique in teaching and learning process, especially in the teaching listening with the similar setting and difficulty.
