Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine that causes disorders of the rib cage. This makes it difficult to design clothes for affected people without following the shape of the rib cage. This paper presents a new 3D clothing design method based on virtual reality for women with physical disabilities such as scoliosis. The current design method is a variation of the draping techniques commonly used by fashion designers to design clothes on a mannequin or human body. However, the current design process highly considers the skeleton and body scan of the person. The skeleton is used to detect the anthropometric points of the patient, while the body scan allows us to detect the morphological contours at the onset of scoliosis. Thus, both allow us to accurately track the patient’s morphology and atypical shape. The position of the morphological contours is indicated by reference marks that are closely associated with the skeleton. This helps to automatically adapt the garment to the evolution of the patient’s pathology over time. The process of creating the 3D garment was processed based on the 3D model of the thorax, which helps to easily determine the anthropometric points and the morphological curves. Using this data, the geometrical model of the garment could be created with 3D ease allowances. The 2D block pattern was then obtained by flattening the 3D patterns using flattening methods. Finally, various tests were performed considering the evolution of pathology to predict the future garment. These tests validate our geometrical model of the garment with 3D ease allowances by comparing the results with previous work.

This paper presents a garment pattern generation process and modelling of virtual garment design method in 3D. This work characterize our global project on virtual clothing design contains of the conception of virtual adaptive mannequin, and also of the creation and modelling of garment in 3D. According to the ideas of mass customization and e-commerce, as well the need of numerical innovations in garment industry we employ our model of virtual garment and methodology enabling to conceive the virtual clothing directly on a mannequin morphotype in 3D. This method gives us possibility to create a perfect garment and taking into account all peculiarities of human body. In 2D method we made two patterns: left and right side separately to obtain best result and to get possibility to compare two cases: when symmetric pattern is used and when we use pattern consisted of two parts specially made for each side of the body. In the present context we use the example of a basic women's shirt: bodice and sleeve. We used the method of making pattern employed in Russia compared with French method. Finally the superposition of virtual and real pattern was done in order to visualise the right results.

The concept of schifflerization of 90° equal-leg angle is presented and its application in triangular-base latticed steel towers is explained. The similarities and differences between schifflerized angles and regular 90° angles are discussed. The current design practice for schifflerized angles is reviewed and its limitation is highlighted. A design method which includes the effect of the torsional-flexural buckling mode of failure is proposed. For ready use of designers, the factored axial compressive resistances of schifflerized angles are tabulated for both the present and proposed design methods. Key words: buckling, compressive resistance, design criteria, schifflerized angles, stability, standards, steel, struts, towers, guyed towers.

The joint domain of beam-to-column connection is very complex parts under loading, which plays an important role in transferring internal forces in light steel structure, such as moment, shear, axial force and so on. Considering the influence of its shear deformation in the structure calculation can help us to reflect the actual mechanics performance and evaluate precisely practical bearing capacity of the structure. According to the actual characteristics of beam-to-column connection, the author established some models of its joint domain, and used the finite element method to analyze and calculate shear deformation of these models. Meanwhile, the author researched the influence of the changes of various parameters to its shear deformation, and provided beneficial suggestions for revising the current design method of light steel structure finally.

We have studied two groups of eight preterm infants, relating chest wall afferent information to respiratory timing. Rib cage and abdominal motion were monitored by magnetometers and flow and tidal volume via a face mask. In the first group, studies were done in REM sleep when spontaneously occurring distortion of the rib cage occurred and a significant linear relationship between the rate of distortion of the chest wall and shortening of the inspiratory time (Ti) was found in all infants. Reduction in this distortion by the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or continuous negative pressure at the body surface (CNeg) was associated with a significant (P less than 0.01) lengthening of Ti. Absence of changes in Ti when pressure was applied in quiet sleep suggested that lung volume or chemical changes were not involved. In the second group of infants we artificially generated the afferent inflow by using vibratory stimuli applied in one intercostal interspace and produced a significant (P less than 0.05) shortening in Ti. We suggest that the distortion of the rib cage in REM sleep generates afferent information from intercostal muscle spindles that is related to the rate of distortion and this, via a supraspinal reflex, inhibits phrenic motoneuron discharge. It may then be of importance in the etiology of apneic episodes in these infants. Applied pressure may be of benefit because it reduces an inhibitory afferent inflow.

ABSTRACT The sterilization chamber is designed to sterilize the body using a filler formulation that is not harmful to the skin surface. Formulation, namely the composition of filler fluids (type, dose and amount) using substances that are safe for the body accordingly, certainly provides benefits. The use of the sterilization booth uses the correct and safe filling fluid. The sterilization chamber uses a mist nozzle sprayer (with the appropriate discharge) to spray the filling liquid so that the user is safe. This sterilization booth is named "White Box". This "White Box" research aims to design (functional and structural) and test (function test and performance test) on a system and mechanism for condensing the condensation of a humidifier that can fill the sterilization room optimally. The design method of the "White Box" sterilization booth uses a qualitative method with the following phases: (1) The preparation stage, namely the functional design and the structural design of the "White Box"; (2) The implementation stage is analyzing the use of tools and materials and making sterilization booths; (3) Post-implementation stage, namely testing the sterilization chamber, including the function test and performance test of the sterilization chamber. The design activity of the "White Box" sterilization booth was carried out by testing various variations of the prototype, including variations in the dimensions of the distribution pipe, the shape of the distribution pipe, and variations of the piping system. The validation process includes: (1) The diameter of the pipe against humidifier dew bursts; (2) The shape of the piping against humidifier dew spray; and (3) the length of the pipe passage to the humidifier dew spray. Current design practices for addiction treatment facilities reflect that of the western perspective on health, providing sterile, monolithic and cold environments. The quest for cleanliness, static and conditioned spaces robs the user of the richness of an engaging experience, isolating them into a sealed box. We further numb and anesthetize patients, disembodying them from the world and hindering their abilities to achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual awareness. This disengagement of the natural, human and spiritual realms proliferates the problems facing people with addiction. This thesis proposes an engagement of Anishinabek healing and wellbeing principles to inform the design of addiction healing spaces that stimulate the users, re-engages and enhances one’s awareness and understanding of one’s self, other beings and place in the world. By incorporating these principles into design, architecture can begin to re-engage the mind, the body, the heart and the soul of people suffering from addiction wellbeing issues.

Since 2000, design practice in the UK has changed dramatically. Boundaries between design disciplines have dissolved, and many contemporary design studios now defy classification. These studios are reconfiguring the design landscape, yet a uni-disciplinary structure still dominates undergraduate education. This is creating a disconnection between practice and education and posing critical questions for the current design education system. This article outlines the findings of a PhD research study exploring this disconnection, and although situated within the UK, the findings have international relevance. An initial scoping exercise draws on interviews with leading commentators from the UK design sector, examining the evolution of design practice over the past 10 years, and possible future directions for undergraduate education. Findings highlight that UK policy for creative education has placed undergraduate design courses in potential crisis. Arguably, the current university system for design education is outdated. It is now necessary to redefine the skills and processes twenty-first-century designers need. The body of the research is situated within five internationally renowned creative studios which defy classification. In-depth ethnographic studies cross-analyse the creative processes of these studios and their views on education. Findings identify key components of each studio’s processes, while also exploring studio members’ educational experiences, and reflections on future implications for pedagogy. This article argues that this growing disconnect between practice and education calls for existing pedagogic models to be challenged, proposes alternative approaches and highlights the need for policymakers, practitioners and educators to work together to best prepare young designers to meet today’s challenges.

Abstract: In this paper, the traditional trunk lid was analyzed using finite element method firstly, and then the basic mechanical properties of the lid were obtained, which were used as the topology optimization constrains of the trunk lid outer panel, then the aluminum alloy frame structure that could satisfy the static mechanical stiffness properties was designed; According to the requirement, the trunk lid inner panel was redesigned, the material properties determined in advance were given to the inner and outer panel respectively, after being assembled, the best panel thickness could be obtained by ways of size optimization. Compared to the analysis results, the new aluminum-plastic structure can meet the requirements in performance, and has significant effect on light-weight. This paper provides some reference for the development of the aluminum-plastic structure of the body design method.
