Nowadays, travelers can use different modes of transport, and they usually choose the most suitable and reliable mode available. The choice of one mode of transport as an alternative to another is subjective. It is usually built upon passenger attitude toward the advantages and disadvantages of using a particular mode. This article proposes analytical methods for and research results on passenger choices for sustainable train journeys as an alternative to traveling by bus. The rank averages of all criteria and their normalized subjective weights were calculated with reference to new linear (ARTIW-L) and nonlinear (ARTIW-N) methods of average rank transformation into weight. A correlation between sub-criteria rank averages and normalized weights is presented, based on the minimum number of passengers required to be interviewed to provide reliable results. The average ranks assigned by passengers to the evaluation sub-criteria and their global weights were used for determining and describing the most and least important key criteria by applying the inverse hierarchy for assessment of main criteria importance (IHAMCI) method. The analysis shows that the most important key criterion belonged to the sub-criteria characterizing economy, while the less important key criteria included ride comfort. The least important key criteria described safety and environmental protection, whose normalized subjective overall weights were the lowest. Rail transport authorities and companies involved in transporting passengers can make this mode of transport more attractive to people by giving priority to improving the services they provide to passengers.

The choice of a particular mode of transport as an alternative to another one is subjective and usually based on an individual passenger’s approach to the evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of some particular means of transport. The paper presents the methods of analysing the reasons for passengers’ choice of travelling by train as an alternative to using air transport and the results obtained in the research. The 16 criteria (sub-criteria), describing the advantages of travelling by rail over air travel, are defined. The data of the survey questionnaire filled by 52 passengers of the Vilnius–Moscow train and the ranks assigned by them to the considered criteria are described. The average ranks of all 16 criteria and their normalized subjective weights are calculated by using a new method of average rank transformation into weight (ARTIW). The average ranks assigned by the passengers of the train to sub-criteria and the calculated global weights show what criteria are most important. Using the inverse hierarchy model based on the sub-criteria weights, the most and the least important groups of criteria are determined. The institutions and companies engaged in passenger transportation by rail, which give priority to improving the services described by the most important criteria, can make this mode of transport more attractive to people.

To improve the handling stability of automobiles and reduce the odds of rollover, active or semi-active suspension systems are usually used to control the roll of a vehicle. However, these kinds of control systems often take a zero-roll-angle as the control target and have a limited effect on improving the performance of the vehicle when turning. Tilt control, which actively controls the vehicle to tilt inward during a curve, greatly benefits the comprehensive performance of a vehicle when it is cornering. After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the tilt control strategies for narrow commuter vehicles by combining the structure and dynamic characteristics of automobiles, a direct tilt control (DTC) strategy was determined to be more suitable for automobiles. A model predictive controller for the DTC strategy was designed based on an active suspension. This allowed the reverse tilt to cause the moment generated by gravity to offset that generated by the centrifugal force, thereby significantly improving the handling stability, ride comfort, vehicle speed, and rollover prevention. The model predictive controller simultaneously tracked the desired tilt angle and yaw rate, achieving path tracking while improving the anti-rollover capability of the vehicle. Simulations of step-steering input and double-lane change maneuvers were performed. The results showed that, compared with traditional zero-roll-angle control, the proposed tilt control greatly reduced the occupant’s perceived lateral acceleration and the lateral load transfer ratio when the vehicle turned and exhibited a good path-tracking performance.

Abstract In this article, the Sinh–Gordon function method and sub-equation method are used to construct traveling wave solutions of modified equal width equation. Thanks to the proposed methods, trigonometric soliton, dark soliton, and complex hyperbolic solutions of the considered equation are obtained. Common aspects, differences, advantages, and disadvantages of both analytical methods are discussed. It has been shown that the traveling wave solutions produced by both analytical methods with different base equations have different properties. 2D, 3D, and contour graphics are offered for solutions obtained by choosing appropriate values of the parameters. To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of these techniques, a nonlinear evolution equation was investigated, and with the help of symbolic calculation, these methods have been shown to be a powerful, reliable, and effective mathematical tool for the solution of nonlinear partial differential equations.

Abstract This paper presents a systematic method for deriving the minimum number of equations of motion for multibody system containing closed kinematic loops. A set of joint or natural coordinates is used to describe the configuration of the system. The constraint equations associated with the closed kinematic loops are found systematically in terms of the joint coordinates. These constraints and their corresponding elements are constructed from known block matrices representing different kinematic joints. The Jacobian matrix associated with these constraints is further used to find a velocity transformation matrix. The equations of motions are initially written in terms of the dependent joint coordinates using the Lagrange multiplier technique. Then the velocity transformation matrix is used to derive a minimum number of equations of motion in terms of a set of independent joint coordinates. An illustrative example and numerical results are presented, and the advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed.

Purpose. Currently, the organization of sales at the enterprise is the main and continuous process that provides the enterprise with its economic efficiency and bringing the goods to the consumer. The purpose of this work is to analyze and compare modes of transport and its role in the marketing of products by an enterprise. Methodology. To build a model for the marketing activity of an enterprise, as well as when modeling the mechanism of functioning of its organizational, economic and production structure and the place of transport in the structure of an industrial enterprise, elements of economic and mathematical modeling were used. Analysis of the data obtained allows you to choose the best method of transportation, which is extremely important to ensure that the needs of the enterprise, as well as the needs of consumers, are met. Findings. Marketing and logistics services of the enterprise need, having studied all the advantages and disadvantages of all types of transport, to choose the most optimal mode of transport when transporting goods. For the sale of its products, the enterprise should take into account that over time, the costs of different types of transport may change, and the transportation schemes should be revised. The paper compares the modes of transport and the structure of freight turnover by mode of transport (as a percentage of the total). Originality. The use of a mathematical apparatus in the construction of functional dependencies that make up a general economic and mathematical model that characterizes the organization of the marketing activities of an enterprise will allow not only to identify «weak» points, but also to adjust the marketing policy of the enterprise accordingly, relying not on abstract conclusions, but on the obtained clear dependencies. Practical value. The result is, first of all, a reduction in costs in the marketing policy of the enterprise and an increase in competitiveness, an increase in profits and maximum satisfaction of consumer requirements.

The relative advantages and disadvantages of various analytical methods for nonholonomic systems are briefly presented and discussed. The techniques of Kane’s method are then used to develop a derivation of a general method which consolidates and employs the advantages of the various classical methods. These advantages include the automatic elimination of nonworking constraint forces while avoiding the computation of vector components of acceleration. The method also provides for the arbitrary choice of dependent variables so that it may be adapted to a variety of nonholonomic systems. Two special cases are considered and the method is then illustrated in the classical problem of the rolling coin.

Ferrate ions are a highly oxidizing and unstable species that are challenging to quantify and analyze. They are, however, becoming increasingly recognized as an excellent candidate for a number of applications such as for water treatment. A wider acceptance of ferrates requires an accurate assay of the produced ferrates. We report on four analytical methods (existing and new) for quantification of ferrates and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. These methods include titrimetric analysis and spectrometric techniques such as direct colorimetric measurements of ABTS or NaI colorimetric. In terms of accuracy, the cost, simplicity, and time required the modified indirect UV-Vis NaI method is shown to be the most effective of all of the four methods investigated.

This paper aims to present the role railway transport plays in European Union and in Romania. The importance of this mode of transport is shortly put to the reader forefronts, while at the same time there is presented its share in land transport market. Road transport has its advantages, but its market share cannot be motivated only by market considerations; there are other factors which put this type of transport on a predominant position. The advantages of rail transport are presented face-to-face with road transport especially for passengers’ transport, how railway transport can gain a greater share in land transport market, and how it can contribute to create the conditions of a more sustainable future.

Methodology for determining priorities in implementing irrigation plans using multicriteria analysis method DEXi is applied on the specific case study area in the sub-catchment area of river Orljava in Požega-Slavonia County, Croatia. Five potential irrigation areas are analyzed according to five selected criteria: environmental protection, water-related (4 sub-criteria), social, economic and time criteria with different criteria importance (weight). The aims of this paper are: confirm the adequacy of using DEXi method when determining priorities in fulfilling irrigation plans; present the model for preparation of the input data; apply the method and give feedback on the application.

The paper presents a real-time technique for determining the minimum number of panel-to-panel support brackets in an unpressurised spacecraft body and their installation positions employing topology optimisation in order to satisfy the dynamic compatibility requirements between the spacecraft and its launch vehicle. These support brackets connect honeycomb panels of the spacecraft body, which form the foundation of its structural design. The technique should be used at early design stages (such as pilot project and draft design) to generate structural design options in real time. We provide a general approach to using the technique as well as its detailed description based on a test problem example utilising the MSC. Patran/Nastran software package. We stated the optimisation problem mathematically and described its parameter selection. We list primary advantages and disadvantages of this technique as compared to the classical use of topology optimisation. Results obtained via the technique proposed may be used as guidelines for design engineers developing design documentation. The paper also outlines potential further development of the technique.
