We investigated whether a 1-week stay in the mountains may have a positive impact on Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB) and cardiorespiratory endurance in asthmatic children from an urban area. Spirometry was performed before and 10 min after a 20 m shuttle run test (20mSRT) on the first and seventh day of a summer asthma camp in the Italian Alps at 900 m of altitude. Spirometry z-scores were derived from the Global Lung Initiative 2012 prediction equations, and percentiles of the 20mSRT performance were assigned according to De Miguel-Etayo’s and Tomkinson’s predictive equations. A FEV1 decrease ≥10% after the exercise was defined as EIB. Particulate matter pollution was monitored during the camp and in the urban area of provenience. Twenty-four subjects (age range 7–16 years) were included. Frequency of EIB decreased from 58% (14/24) at day-1 to 33% (8/24) at the end of the camp (p = 0.08). Most subjects with a 20mSRT in the lowest quartile at day 1 had EIB (9/11). The proportion of children with a 20mSRT <25° percentile decreased from 45% (11/24) at day-1 to 16% (4/24) at day-7 (p = 0.02). Conclusion: One-week climate therapy in the mountains improved both bronchial hyperreactivity and cardiorespiratory endurance in our cohort of asthmatic children.

The effects of inhaled terbutaline, a β2-adrenergic agonist, administered via a 750-ml spacer device were studied in young asthmatic subjects with exercise-induced asthma. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of the effects of inhaled 0.5 mg terbutaline and placebo was conducted in 10 asthmatic children (age range 6–16 years) with documented exercise-induced asthma. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) was measured at baseline, 15 min after inhaling terbutaline or placebo, and at intervals up to 60 min after exercising. Subjects exercised using a cycle ergometer for 5 min at a submaximal, constant work-load while breathing dry air at room temperature. Terbutaline induced bronchodilation at rest in all subject and fully prevented exercise-induced asthma in nine out of the 10 subjects; the exercise-induced fall in FEV1 was markedly reduced in the remaining subject. It is concluded that exercise-induced asthma can be inhibited by pretreatment with inhaled terbutaline, administered via a spacer, in a majority of young asthmatics.

Purpose of the Study. To examine parental factors that influence bronchial asthma and immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in their children. Methods. The data in this study were derived from the Tucson Epidemiological Study of Airways Obstructive Diseases since 1972. Eleven evaluation periods have been performed since that time. Asthma histories were established by questionnaire. IgE levels were obtained in 738 children, 1043 fathers, and 1261 mothers. IgE levels were determined by paper radioimmunosorbent (PRIST) technique. IgE Z scores were established. An IgE Z score is the number of standard deviations IgE differs from matched age and sex-matched subjects and log corrected. Skin tests were performed by prick technique to house dust, mold, grass, tree and weed mix and appropriate controls. Results. The percentage of children with bronchial asthma increased with the presence of asthma in parents so that 11.5% of children with asthma occurred in families with no parental asthma compared with 48.6% when both parents had asthma. The rate of childhood bronchial asthma was significantly related to parental IgE levels only when the mother and father had bronchial asthma (43% vs 20%) and much less so (22% vs 10%), when there was no parental asthma. In addition, asthma in the child proved to be a highly significant determinant of the child's IgE Z score, even after correcting for parental IgE Z score. The presence of atopy (ie, positive skin tests) was also not a significant determinant of IgE levels in asthmatic children. Discussion. The authors conclude that the inheritance of IgE is only one factor related to the development of asthma, and is limited as a predictor.

Both metaproterenol sulfate and albuterol are inhaled medications commonly used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm. Their efficacy and duration of action in controlling exercise-induced bronchospasm were compared with placebo in 18 asthmatic children (age range: 12 to 17 years) in a single-blind randomized crossover study. Standardized treadmill exercise challenges were repeated every two hours for up to six hours following the initial exercise test. With the initial exercise challenge, both active medications blocked exercise-induced bronchospasm with equal efficacy. On the other hand, when the duration of action of the medications was compared: (1) albuterol blocked exercise-induced bronchospasm longer than metaproterenol sulfate in eight subjects, (2) the reverse was true in only one patient, and (3) the medications blocked for equal duration in nine subjects. Thus, although both active agents were equally efficacious in blocking exercise-induced bronchospasm initially, the duration of action of albuterol was significantly (P &lt; .05) longer on serial testing than that of metaproterenol sulfate. Both medications were significantly better than placebo in efficacy and duration of action.

Background Physical fitness is considered an important indicator of health in adolescents. However, in recent years several studies in the scientific literature have shown a considerable lower trend and an alarming worsening of the current adolescents’ physical condition when comparing with previous decades, especially in urban populations. The aim of the current study was to analyse the temporal trend in cardiorespiratory endurance (CRE) in urban Catalan adolescents over a 20-year period (1999–2019). Methods A cross-sectional analysis study considering the 20-m Shuttle Run test (SRT) results obtained in the last 20 years was carried out. 1,701 adolescents between 15 and 16 years old (914 boys and 787 girls) were divided into four groups, corresponding to consecutive periods of five years (Group 1: 1999–2004; Group 2: 2005–2009; Group 3: 2010–2014 and Group 4: 2015–2019). ANOVA was used to test the period effect on CRE and post hoc Bonferroni analysis was performed to test pairwise differences between groups (p < 0.05). Results Results showed a significantly lower performance in CRE in both sexes. The percentual negative difference was 0.67%, 9.6% and 7% for boys and 5.06%, 14.97% and 9.41% for girls, when comparing the performance in 20-m Shuttle Run test for the first period, respectively. Conclusions Results suggest that the physical fitness of Catalan urban adolescents is lower in both sexes when comparing the different analysed periods of time. Therefore, CRE adolescents should be improved in order to help to protect against cardiovascular disease and other health risks in adulthood.

This study refined the Support Needs Inventory for Parents of Asthmatic Children (SNIPAC) (Coleman, Maltby, Kristjanson, & Robinson, 2001) to produce a more parsimonious tool to assess the importance and meet the support needs of parents of children with asthma. The original tool was completed by 145 parents of 199 children with asthma, and 74 of these also provided test-retest responses. Internal consistency reliability, construct validity, and stability over time were assessed and refinements were made. Internal consistency reliability of the revised 20-item tool ranged from .77 to .95 for the three subscales of the Parent’s Priority Scale (PPS), and .92 for the full PPS. Cronbach’s alphas ranged from .74 to .90 for the three subscales of the Parent’s Fulfillment Scale (PFS) and was .91 for the full scale. Factor analysis results of the PPS were compatible with the tool’s conceptual framework. The revised 20-item tool demonstrated adequate psychometric properties in most areas. This tool may be used for research or clinical screening without imposing undue burden on parents. Further work is required to establish the tool’s stability over time.

Abstract This study presents the evaluation of chosen anthropometric and motor parameters in group of female junior competitors throughout the course of 2-year preparation of aerobic gymnastics by means of Z-scores. The observed group consisted of 12 girls (average age at the beginning of observance 14.08 ± 1.19 years). Evaluation of anthropometric (body height, body weight, body mass index, percentage of body fat, acting body weight) and motor parameters (sit-ups in 30 seconds and 60 seconds, pull-ups to bar, modified push-ups, standing long jump, backwards tandem walking, shuttle run 4×10 m, Jacík’s test) was carried out in standard conditions in nine girls at 3-month intervals. It has been confirmed that female probands with higher Z-score of motor parameters together with lower Z-score of anthropometric parameters achieved higher sport performance during the 2-year observance at competitions, with an exception of one such proband.
