In order to improve the thermal conductivity and the insulation properties of polyethylene (PE) used as cable insulation under DC stress, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and inorganic particles have been considered as micro-filler and nano-filler, respectively. As a 2D material, the orientation of h-BN possibly affects the insulation properties of the polymer. It is important to understand the influence of the filler orientation on the insulation performance of the polymer. In this work, a numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the effect of orientation of micro-h-BN on charge transport and DC breakdown of PE-based micro/nano-composites and a comparison between the simulation result and previous literature data has been conducted. The h-BN was designated to be parallel, perpendicular to the normal sample surface vector (the direction of electric field in this work) or randomly distributed in the matrix, and the charge transport behavior and DC breakdown strength in the samples were discussed by using the bipolar charge transport (BCT) model. The results indicated that when the h-BN was perpendicular to the normal vector, the density of trapped charge was the largest and the DC breakdown strength was the highest among the three cases studied. It is suggested that the charge trapping/de-trapping processes and the electric field in the sample vary with the orientation of h-BN through tailoring the trap characteristics of the material.

Electropulse rock breaking has wide application prospects in hard rock drilling and ore breaking. At present, there are no suitable physical mathematical models that describe electropulse boring (EPB) processes under confining pressures. In this paper, a high-voltage electropulse breakdown damage model is established for granite, which includes three submodels. It considers electric field distortions inside the rock, and an electric field distribution coefficient is introduced in the electro-breakdown model. A shock-wave model is also constructed and solved. To simulate the heterogeneity of rocks, EPB rock breaking in deep environments is simulated using the two-dimensional Particle Flow Code (PFC2D) program. The solved shock wave is loaded into the model, and confining pressure is applied by the particle servo method. An artificial viscous boundary is used in the numerical simulation model. Using this approach, a complete numerical simulation of electropulse granite breaking is achieved. Breakdown strength and the influences of physical and mechanical parameters on it are also obtained. Time-varying waveforms of electrical parameters are obtained, and the effect of confining pressure on EPB is also described.

The charge transport in polypropylene was studied under DC electric fields at different temperatures. By the experimental measurement and simulation of the BCT model, we studied conduction currents, breakdown strength, and space charge distribution. In particular, the conduction characteristics under high temperature and high field, especially the conduction characteristics before the breakdown, were studied by systematic experiments, and the conduction characteristics and the breakdown mechanism were further studied by simulation. The results show that in the process of measuring conduction currents until breakdown, both high temperature and high electric field will promote charge transport. However, the free volume will increase at high temperature, which will easily lead to faster charge transport and breakdown. In the breakdown process at different temperatures, there are different breakdown mechanisms. At 20–60 °C, the electric breakdown process has mainly occurred in polypropylene film, and the breakdown strength is almost unchanged. At 80 °C, electric breakdown and thermal breakdown act together, and the charge transport is faster, and the breakdown field becomes smaller. Finally, we conclude that thermal stress plays a very important role in charge transport. In a high-temperature environment, the volume expansion of polypropylene will promote charge transport, and the insulation of polypropylene capacitor films will be damaged.

The outdoor insulator is commonly exposed to environmental pollution. The presence of water like raindrops and dew on the contaminant surface can lead to surface degradation due to leakage current. However, the physical process of this phenomenon is not well understood. Hence, in this study we develop a mathematical model of leakage current on the outdoor insulator surface using the Nernst Planck theory which accounts for the charge transport between the electrodes (negative and positive electrode) and charge generation mechanism. Meanwhile the electric field obeys Poisson’s equation. Method of Lines technique is used to solve the model numerically in which it converts the PDE into a system of ODEs by Finite Difference Approximations. The numerical simulation compares reasonably well with the experimental conduction current. The findings from the simulation shows that the conduction current is affected by the electric field distribution and charge concentration. The rise of the conduction current is due to the distribution of positive ion while the dominancy of electron attachment with neutral molecule and recombination with positive ions has caused a significant reduction of electron and increment of negative ions.

The adsorption of CO on the surface of Cu-based nanoparticles was studied in the presence of an external electric field by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). Nanoparticles were synthesized on the surface of a graphite support by the impregnation–precipitation method. The chemical composition of the surface of the nanoparticles was determined as a mixture of Cu2O, Cu4O3 and CuO oxides. CO was adsorbed from the gas phase onto the surface of the nanoparticles. During the adsorption process, the potential differences ΔV = +1 or −1 V were applied to the vacuum gap between the sample and the grounded tip. Thus, the system of the STM tip and sample surface formed an asymmetric capacitor, inside which an inhomogeneous electric field existed. The CO adsorption process is accompanied by the partial reduction of nanoparticles. Due to the orientation of the CO molecule in the electric field, the reduction was weak in the case of a positive potential difference, while in the case of a negative potential difference, the reduction rate increased significantly. The ability to control the adsorption process of CO by means of an external electric field was demonstrated. The size of the nanoparticle was shown to be the key factor affecting the adsorption process, and particularly, the strength of the local electric field close to the nanoparticle surface.

We have performed a theoretical investigation of the effects of space charges in the Environmental SEM (ESEM). The ElectroScan ESEM uses an electrostatic field to cause gas cascade amplification of secondary electron signals. Previous theoretical descriptions of the gas cascade process in the ESEM have assumed that distortion of the electric field due to space charges can be neglected. This assumption has now been tested and shown to be valid. In the ElectroScan ESEM, a positively biased detector is located above the sample, creating an electric field on the order of 105 V/m between the detector and sample surface. Secondary electrons leaving the sample are cascaded though the gas, amplifying the signal and creating positive ions. Because the electrons move very quickly through the gas, they do not accumulate in the specimen-to-detector gap. However, the velocity of the positive ions is limited by diffusion.
