Sustainability of the workforce becomes a crucial issue, of which responsible care for employees can increase job satisfaction and human capital that impact corporate ability to absorb and generate new knowledge. Firms are obligated to provide a healthy and safe working environment for their employees, but it may in turn hinder innovation due to rigid and structured institutional regulations. Drawing on data of 308 China’s pharmaceutical firms from 2010 to 2017, we investigated whether employee care can trigger innovation under corporate adoption of the occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). Our results suggest that both employee care and OHSMS adoption have a positive impact on innovation. Moreover, the positive relationship between employee care and innovation was more pronounced in firms that had adopted the OHSMS certification. These findings are valuable to policymakers and corporate managers in emerging economies through corroborating the important role of workforce sustainability in facilitating firm innovation.

The article discusses the principles of determining the maximum admissible concentration and intensity values for harmful agents present at workplaces as the basic criteria for ensuring safe and hygienic working conditions in Poland and in the European Union. The role of the Interdepartmental Commission for the Maximum Admissible Concentrations and Intensities of Agents Harmful to Health in the Working Environment is presented in this process. The attention was drawn to the relationship between the occupational health and safety legislation and the EC regulations on chemicals, which together provide both employers and the Member States with the necessary data and instruments to work safely with chemicals and to be able to take appropriate actions and risk management measures.

The aim of this research was to study the impact of the unitary prevention delegates (UPDs) on the Spanish working environment. To this end, a cross-sectional study was carried out using microdata from the National Survey on Health and Safety Management in Companies (ENGE-2009) with a sample of 5147 work centres. To measure the relationship between the presence of UPD in workplaces with preventive management indicators and damage to health, individual and multiple logistic regression models were carried out, calculating the crude (cOR) and adjusted (aOR) odds ratios by sociodemographic covariates, with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Ambivalent results were obtained. On the one hand, a positive impact of the UPDs was found, in the management of prevention showing a higher probability of prevention plans being carried out (aOR = 3.97; 95% CI: 3.26–4.83), risk assessments (aOR = 5.96; 95% CI: 4.44–8.01) and preventive actions were planned (aOR = 3.01; 95% CI: 2.55–3.56), as well as 1.56 times less likely to register minor occupational accidents (aOR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.53–0.76). On the other hand, the presence of the UPDs did not promote the activation of a participatory culture and did not reduce the probability of suffering serious and fatal accidents at work. In conclusion, UPDs need to activate workers’ participation to improve results.

Abstract The vital purpose of this research work is to examine the impacts of occupational health and safety management on employee's performance. It aims to investigate the nexus between the practice of OHS, safe working environment and performance of employees. The research work adopt a descriptive approach to scrutinize the contributions of provision of adequate health and safety equipment to performance of employees at Ardova Plc. Aside collecting primary data from the staffs of Ardova Plc in Lagos State cutting across diverse socio-economic class, simple random sampling was utilised in the study using 90 questionnaires to collect the primary data. However, descriptive data was therefore analyzed using Statistical Tool to show the Cross-tabulation, correlation and Chi-Square Test. The research study concludes that practice of occupational health and safety management can boost employee performance, and further suggest some policy recommendations.

This study investigates whether capital account liberalization, a leading characteristic of globalization, is associated with firms’ future innovation output. Employing a novel firm-level panel data set covering 41 countries over two decades, we show that capital account liberalization is significantly associated with higher corporate patenting activities, particularly for firms from innovation-intensive industries. Further analyses show that the effect is stronger among firms from economies in a better legal environment, signifying the important role of good institutional quality in facilitating the positive impact of liberalization. The effect is also stronger among firms with higher initial productivity, consistent with the “productivity” hypothesis, according to which bigger and more productive firms generate more innovation after liberalization. Our findings are robust to the use of various measurements, subsamples, and estimation models. This study provides global firm-level evidence of the real economic impact of financial globalization.

Any approach to occupational health must acknowledge that accidents in the workplace result in many injuries. Construction, agriculture, and primary extraction are the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries, but many more minor injuries result from all types of work. Health and safety law has developed with an emphasis on accident prevention that is based on designing and managing the working environment. Establishing this approach to safety management begins with an organization committing itself to a policy influenced by legal obligations and current good practice. While this chapter draws heavily on the UK situation, where there has been considerable experience and development of approaches to health and safety, it is incumbent on any physician to consider the work environment and whether changes to the workplace might improve not only the lot of their patients, but others potentially at risk in the workplace.

The objective of this paper is to analyze the demography aspect of occupational accident occurrence in Malaysia for manufacturing industry. High accident rate would give an adverse effect not only to the victims and their family but also to the organization as well. This study analyses various type of occupational accidents which limited to temporary disability with more than one day sick leave and cases recorded range between 2008 and 2013. The data is gathered from six different sectors within manufacturing industry by using local specific approach.  Information related to each accident is obtained by checking past occupational accident record and interviewing site safety officer in charge, human resource representative, site supervisor and fellow workers. There are 342 cases in total have been gathered during data collection process before data analysis phase took place. This study provides a better perspective regarding to occupational accident occurrence to interested stakeholder such as enforcement body, occupational health and safety practitioner and company management itself. The findings from this study can be used to draft necessary preventive measures in order to provide safe working environment which can give significant impact through reduction of occupational accidents in the future.

Implementation of a safety management system (SMS) in automotive manufacturing and assembly has been recognized as an effective way to provide a safe working environment for employees, increase employee morale, and reduce corporate costs. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. (TMMTX) has implemented a SMS in part of a regional goal initiated by Toyota Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA) to support the OSHA’s Injury & Illness Prevention Program (I2P2). This system provides a systematic way to identify hazards; eliminate or control the risk and incorporate in Toyota Production System. In addition, the established management system provides a framework to meet legal obligations under occupational health and safety regulation. The system implemented provides methods to manage injury and illness related to process safety, ergonomic, and industrial hygiene risks. The system uses joint labor and management teams to identify and evaluate jobs and develop and implement solutions. This paper summarizes the efforts of TMMTX in implementing and maintaining workplace activities that meet the requirements of this safety management system. The methodologies, strategies, and challenges are outlined to provide important links that are critical in sustaining these activities.

This paper investigates the determinants of firm innovation in Indonesia. Using quality of local regulations index constructed by the Indonesia’s Regional Autonomy Watch (KPPOD) as measure of institutions, We found that better institutional quality at the local level was associated with more innovation and that firms experiencing major obstacle in access to finance were less likely to innovate. Access to finance is more critical for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) whereas institutional quality is more important for large firms. The positive impact of better institutions on innovation is asymmetrically distributed. Better local institutional quality disproportionately benefited non-constrained firms.AbstrakMakalah ini menyelidiki faktor-faktor penentu terjadinya inovasi pada perusahaan di Indonesia. Sebagai proksi kelembagaan digunakan variabel Peraturan Daerah yang dibuat oleh Komite Pemantuan Pelaksanaan Otonomi Daerah (KPPOD). Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa kualitas kelembagaan yang baik pada tingkat daerah erat kaitannya dengan tingkat inovasi yang lebih tinggi dan perusahaan-perusahaan yang mengalami kendala akses keuangan cenderung tidak melakukan inovasi. Faktor akses keuangan lebih menentukan bagi perkembangan inovasi perusahaan perusahaan kecil dan menengah sedangkan kualitas kelembagaan lebih menentukan bagi perusahaan besar. If regulation is to be effective, not only must changes take place in the mode of regulation but also the concepts held by many in management ranks. Misconceptions often abound which, it is suggested, stem from a lack of appreciation of accident causation, the part that the management system plays or a tendency to blame the victim. Thus, too much attention continues to be paid to operator error, whereas in reality, it is frequently the organization that has failed. However, when management recognizes the pivotal role of the system, and makes greater use of quality control methods, the way will be open for the inspectorate also to be more innovative. They will then be initially auditors of the management of the occupational health and safety policy. Without that change the enforcers will, of necessity, continue to be searchers for violations and investigators after the event. It is also likely that the health hazards of the working environment will continue to be given inadequate attention. With the introduction of the Occupational Safety and Health Bill into Parliament in 1990, followed by a change of government bringing its new agenda and thus casting an ominous shadow of concern, such factors assume a greater degree of importance.
