The Getty’s Etruscan painted terracotta wall panel, Athletic Official, recently has been speculated to be associated with a Caeretan wall panel depicting a Discobolus based on a shared iconography. To better understand the materials and techniques used to create the Getty panel and investigate its relation to extant Etruscan painted terracotta panels, a multi-analytical study was conducted, using broadband visible, IR, and UV imaging, along with scanning MA-XRF, FORS, Raman, SEM-EDS, and XRD analytical techniques. The analytical results together with PCA analysis suggest the clay support of the Getty panel is most similar in composition to that of panels from Cerveteri. A manganese black was identified in the decorative scheme; not commonly employed, this appears to be an important marker for the workshop practice in Cerveteri. Most significantly, the use of MA-XRF scanning allowed for invisible ruling lines on the Athletic Official, presumably laid down at the earliest stages of the creation of the panel, to be visualized. Taken together, the results of this study provide new insights into Caeretan workshop practice as well as provide a framework for better understanding the design and execution of Etruscan polychromy.

Background: Sneha Kalpana is one among the several highly established Kalpana of Ayurvedic system of medicine. Many types of Taila Kalpana are mentioned in Ayurvedic classics and used effectively in therapeutic practice. Tila Taila is the most commonly using Taila. However Narikelataila, Erandataila, Sarshapataila, etc, are also used in special conditions. It is interesting to note that certain preparations are available in the market based on both TilaTaila and Narikela Taila. This is an attempt to comparatively evaluate the formulation Dhutturadi Taila prepared in Tila Taila and Narikela Taila as the bases. Dhutturadi Taila mentioned in Sahasrayogam is taken for the present study. Objectives: To comparatively analyse Dhutturadi Taila samples with classical and advanced analytical techniques. Materials and Methods: Dhutturadi Taila was prepared using two media i.e. Narikela Taila and Tila Taila. Both Taila samples were comparatively analysed with suitable physicochemical parameters and advanced instrumental methods of analysis. Conclusion: As per the existing result it seems that more amount of marker components are extracted into Tila Taila medium when compared with Narikela Taila.

AbstractWith exquisite design and unique style, the painted sculptures of Tutang Buddha and two attendants Buddha in Jingyin Temple are precious cultural heritages of China. The sculpture of Tutang Buddha, which was carved from a mound and painted by ancient craftsmen, was rarely found in ancient China. However, due to natural and human factors, the sculptures were severely damaged. Obviously, they require urgent and appropriate protection and restoration. In this study, samples taken from the sculptures were analysed through multiple analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM–EDS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and granulometry. The analysis results enable us to infer the techniques used by the craftsmen in making the sculptures and provide a reliable evidence for the conservation and future protection of these and similar sculptures.

The application of varnishes on the surface of metal objects has been a very common practice since antiquity, both for protective and aesthetic purposes. One specific case concerns the use of tinted varnishes on copper alloys in order to mimic gilding. This practice, especially flourishing in the 19th century for scientific instruments, decorative objects, and liturgical items, results in large museum collections of varnished copper alloys that need to be preserved. One of the main challenges for conservators and restorers deals with the identification of the varnishes through non-invasive and affordable analytical techniques. We hereby present the experimental methodology developed in the framework of the LacCA and VERILOR projects at the Haute École ARC of Neuchâtel for the identification of gold varnishes on brass. After extensive documentary research and analytical campaigns on varnished museum objects, various historic shellac-based varnishes were created and applied by different methods on a range of brass substrates with different finishes. The samples were then characterized by UV imaging and infrared spectroscopy before and after artificial ageing. The comparative study of these two techniques was performed for different thicknesses of the same varnish and for different shellac grades in order to implement an identification methodology based on simple non-invasive examination and analytical tools, which are accessible to conservators.

The most difficult issue in writing a methods paper on Space Syntax is that it is not simply a method. It is a theory on which a methodology has been built. In the 40 years since introduction, both its theory and its methods have advanced, including the creation and development of computerized software. Essentially Space Syntax investigates layouts, seen in plan drawings; but this is done from mature theoretical arguments about function in those spaces. While theories of society were at the genesis of Space Syntax, it has branched into cognition, transportation, economics, and so on, and has been used to investigate buildings, cities, and regions. In the last decade or so, Space Syntax has been used in different ways to investigate healthcare facilities. This article concentrates on explaining the analytical techniques of Space Syntax. The theoretical underpinnings are minimally described—just enough for the reader to understand the basis of the methods. All examples provided are based on the same hypothetical hospital floor layout for ease of comprehension and comparison. Also, all Space Syntax concepts are italicized for identification. Since the theoretical aspects are not treated in detail, the reader is advised to pay particular attention to the citations for advanced comprehension. This cannot be overemphasized.

Karanjadi Taila is medicated oil used in Ayurveda for Indralupta (Alopecia). Indralupta comes under Kshudra Roga which is characterized by loss of hair it can be correlated with Alopecia areata which is having chief complaint of hair loss on body especially on scalp. The aim of the present study is to do physic-chemical standards for the above Taila and its conversion into Karanjadi Taila cream. These two formulations have a special importance from pharmaceutical point of view when compared to usual Tailas or cream. In present article, we are trying to study analytical results of Karanjadi Taila w.s.r. to Karanjadi Taila cream.

The purpose of the article is to analyze and structure the historiography of the basic historical and cultural studies that study the spatial-figurative and technological means of expression in the performing arts. The scientific novelty of the research is the first complex interdisciplinary systematic selection and analytical study of sources on the role of spatial and technological means of expressiveness in the creation of stage imagery. Through the use ofmultimodal and trans-system approaches, the author concludes that the problems of space-visual and technological means of expressiveness in the performing arts have been fragmented and studied from different angles by both scholars and theater practitioners. Today, however, there is a lack of comprehensive cultural research on the problems of creating stage imagery by spatial and technological means of expression.Key words: historiography, stage imagery, stage space, technological means.

AbstractThe recent development of the analytical techniques offers the unprecedented possibility to study simultaneously concentration of dozens of elements in the same biological matrix sample of 0.5–1.0 g (multielement profiles). The first part of this essay entitled “Think globally… An outline of trace elements in health and disease” aims to introduce the reader to the fascinating field of elements, there importance to our nutrition, their essentiality, deficiency, toxicity and bioavailability to the body and their overall role in health and disease, including the genetic metabolic impairments. In the second part of the essay entitled “… and act locally. The multielement profile of depression” we aimed to show the potential of such a hair multielement profile analysis for the study of human depression in a randomized, double blind, prospective, observational, cross-sectional, clinical, epidemiological, and analytical study. The preliminary results of this ongoing study lead us to put forward the hypothesis that the metabolic origin of depression may be due to some “energostat” failure, probably located in the thalamus, and activated by several essential element deficiencies.
