Studying moderators of the effects of anti-bullying universal interventions is essential to elucidate what works for whom and to tailor more intensive, selective, and indicated programs which meet the needs of non-responders. The present study investigated whether early adolescents’ temperament—effortful control (EC), negative emotionality (NE), and positive emotionality (PE)—moderates the effects of the KiVa anti-bullying program. The sample consisted of 13 schools, with 1051 sixth-grade early adolescents (mean age = 10.93; SD = 0.501), randomly assigned to the KiVa intervention (seven schools; n = 536) or to the control condition (six schools; n = 516). Adolescents reported bullying and victimization before the intervention (pre-test) and after (post-test). Temperament was assessed by a self-report pre-test. Findings showed that EC and NE moderated intervention effects on bullying, indicating that subgroups with high levels of EC, and with low and medium levels of NE were those who benefited most from the intervention. The low-EC subgroup showed a lower increase compared to the control condition, with a considerable effect size. Conversely, the high-NE subgroup did not show any positive effects compared to the control group. Regarding victimization, findings showed that early adolescents with high and medium levels of PE were the subgroups who benefited the most from the intervention, whereas the low-PE subgroup was the most resistant. The present study confirms the relevance of considering temperament as a moderator of intervention effects, since interventions tailored to early adolescents with specific traits might yield larger effects.

In this study, we explored the predictive role of behavioral measures of Executive Functions (EFs) and a self-report measure of Effortful Control (EC) on the academic performance of early adolescents. We also analyzed the mediating role of self-reported empathy and social behavior rated by peers (i.e., prosocial behavior and social preference) and by the lead teacher (i.e., social competence). A sample of 244 adolescents aged between 12 and 13 years participated in the study. The resulting structural equation model indicated that EFs and EC predict academic performance in a complementary and independent way. Results also confirmed the mediating role of empathy and social behavior. The final model explained 64% of academic performance. We discuss the appropriateness of obtaining complementary measures of EFs and EC in predictions of academic performance as well as the importance of introducing activities involving self-regulation, empathy, and socioemotional skills in the school setting.

Short-term Christian overseas volunteer trips, also known as short-term mission trips (STMs), have become increasingly prevalent (Howell & Dorr, 2007). However, research on these programs has been limited. This quasi-experimental study adds to the literature by quantitatively measuring the effects of an STM from Singapore to Thailand. STM recipients’ ( n = 44) self-esteem and readiness for self-directed learning (RSDL) were compared across timepoints – pre-test, post-test, follow-up – and with a control group ( n = 50). It was hypothesized that recipients would experience an increase in self-esteem and RSDL such that their scores would be higher than the control group post-STM. Results provide partial support for the hypotheses; while improvements among recipients were either not significant (for self-esteem) or not long-lasting (for RSDL), recipients had higher scores than the control group post-STM. This suggests that STMs have some, albeit limited, positive effects. Recommendations for promoting greater and longer-lasting effects are offered.

Introduction: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a weight-bearing joint disease and is more common in overweight and obese persons. The objective of this study was to determine the role of rehabilitation exercises (REs) of lower limbs on weight, functional strength, and exercise adherence in overweight and obese knee OA patients. Materials And Method: The patients were recruited from the Urban community of Lahore, Pakistan. The patients were divided into the rehabilitation group (RG) and control group (CG). The patients in the RG performed the REs of lower limbs and followed the instructions of daily care (IDC), while the patients in the CG only followed the IDC for 12 weeks. Outcome measures were assessed at pre-test before grouping and post-test after 12-weeks of interventions. The measures included: weight, functional strength, and exercise adherence. The Paired Samples t-test (for the normally distributed data) and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test (for the data that was not normally distributed) were used to analyze the differences within groups from pre to post-test measurements. The analysis of variance 2 × 2 factors and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used to analyze the difference of weight and functional strength respectively between the groups. Results: The patients in the RG reported a statistically significant weight reduction (p < 0.001) and improvement in the functional strength (p < 0.001) within the group. Similarly, the patients in the CG also reported a significant improvement in the scores of functional strength (p = 0.004) within the group. The improvement in the scores of functional strength was greater in the patients of RG than the CG (p < 0.001. Similarly, the patients in the RG reported a statistically significant reduction in weight than the CG (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The REs could improve weight, functional strength and exercise adherence.

Introduction: Bamboo shoot Gigantochloa apus extract has antioxidant compounds that act as lipid peroxidation inhibitors and reduce free radical formation so that it can be used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative stress in the atherosclerosis. Aim: Knowing the effect of bamboo shoot Gigantochloa apus extract in reducing MDA levels and IL-10 increasing levels in rabbits given atherogenic diet. Methods: This experiment used randomized pre-test and post-test with control group design, in 24 New Zealand White rabbits divided into 4 groups randomly. MDA and IL-10 levels were examined by the ELISA method. Results and conclusion: Bamboo shoot Gigantochloa apus extract can reduce MDA levels and increase IL-10 levels significantly in accordance with increasing doses. Background: The role of the learning methods is changing from teacher centered learning to student centered learning (SCL). One of the SCL methods is collaborative and cooperative learning. The past twenty years have seen an increase in collaborative and cooperative learning based pedagogies in colleges, but not in community based health education. The aim of this study is to identify the efectivity of collaborative and cooperative learning in community based health educationMethod: This research used quasi experimental non-randomized control group post test design. Respondent of the research are 111 geriatric cadres of Kecamatan Kepanjen and 72 geriatric cadres of Kecamatan Singosari.Results: Data shows that cadre’s knowledge in first training, 30 and 90 days after first training increased in both groups (p<0,001). There is no relationship between individual characteristic (age, education, occupation, time to work as a cadre, training) and increase of knowledge (p>0,05).Conclusion: Collaborative and cooperative method can increase cadre’s knowledge of stroke effectively and maintain memory retention longer than conventional method.

The aim of the study is to reveal the effects of the classeswhich enriched with art activitieson academic achievement at the 5th grades. The research group consists of 37 students who determined the science applications course as an elective course in a public school in İzmir during 2015-2016 Education Fall Semester. In this study, from the trial models"Quasi-experimental desing, pre-post test without control group" was used. The data were collected with achievement test and written examination that prepared by researchers in order to measure academic achievement in science applications classes and also interviews that prepared by researchers used in order to determine the opinions of the students on the science applications enriched with art activities. As the results of the research there is a significant difference between the pretest-posttest findings and the pretest-permanency test results of the experimental group. As the results of the achievement test, it is concrete that these activities have positive effects on the students.  It can be said that the applications are effective when the students' interview questions are compared with the answers given by the students after the last application. ÖzetAraştırmanın amacı 5. sınıflarda sanat etkinlikleri ile zenginleştirilmiş bilim uygulamaları dersinin akademik başarıya olan etkilerini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2015-2016 Öğretim Yılı Güz döneminde İzmir’de bir devlet okulunda bilim uygulamaları dersini seçmeli ders olarak belirleyen 37 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır.Bu araştırmada, deneme modellerinden “tek grup öntest-sontest kontrol grupsuz yarı deney deseni” kullanılmıştır. Veriler bilim uygulamaları dersindeki akademik başarıyı ölçmek amacıyla araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan bilim uygulamaları başarı testi ve yazılı yoklama ile öğrencilerin sanat etkinlikleri ile zenginleştirilmiş bilim uygulamaları dersine yönelik görüşlerini belirlemek amacıyla hazırlanan görüşme formu ile toplanmıştır.Araştırmada deney grubunun öntest-sontest sonuçlarında ve öntest-kalıcılık testi sonuçlarında anlamlı fark bulunmaktadır. Yapılan başarı testi sonucunda bu etkinliklerin öğrencileri olumlu etkilediği somut olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Öğrencilerin görüşme sorularına ön uygulama ile son uygulama sonrası verdikleri cevaplar karşılaştırıldığında uygulamaların etkili olduğu söylenebilir.

This study investigates the EFL classrooms to identify the role of interaction in reading comprehension classes. Student-student interaction through the form of pair-work was introduced while the pre-test and post-test measured its effect. Adequate classes were observed to identify the level of the control group students. This study tried to find out the role of interaction in facilitating students’ reading comprehension. It had found that when the students got the opportunity to interact through pair-work, they became their source of input. And it was evident that after the introduction of interaction, their comprehension ability enhanced as they correctly answered more questions in the post-test than in the pre-test. Based on the results, the study also recommends the introduction of interaction to enhance students’ skill in listening, speaking, and writing.

Building on the increasing number of programs designed to enhance brain development, a program developed in Korea, Brain Respiration, was adapted to a school in Nevada. Classes were offered twice weekly to a class of fourth and fifth grade students with control group classes assessed in the same school. Self-report surveys, teacher observations, and standardized reading and math scores were used to determine effects of the program on the students. Some differences were found in the pretest for the survey and the observation, with control groups scoring higher. There were differences in some post-test scores, with treatment group children scoring higher when differences did occur. There also were differences in the reading and math scores, with control groups scoring higher than the overall treatment group, but not higher when compared to those actively participating in the program. Such differences are discussed as well as other issues possibly influencing the effects.

The learning assessment centre helps managers define learning objectives based on feedback in a group of peers. This study tested the hypothesis that the centre empowers managers to cope with change. Statistical methodology for a pre-test, post-test design using ordinal (Likert) data is also reviewed. Middle managers from a bank undergoing major reorganisation were divided into two matched groups. The experimental group spent three days in a learning assessment centre designed to give them self-insight and an understanding of the bank's requirements during the transformation. The control group received no treatment. Both groups were measured before and after the centre on a self-report measure and completed a peer assessment questionnaire completed by subordinates. Fifty-eight managers completed both pre-test and post-test measures. Whilst the subordinates of the control group reported a drop in their managers' empowerment, the subordinates of the experimental group reported a substantial improvement in their managers' empowerment. The difference between the groups was significant for five of the six areas measured. The difference between the self-reported performance of the two groups of managers was significant for only one area. These findings suggest that the learning centre could provide a solution to companies faced with the potentially destructive impact of major transition on management effectiveness.

This study attempted to tap into the potential of reading for incidental vocabulary learning by exposing EFL learnersto elaborated texts. This study was also concerned with investigating learners’ attitudes toward using elaboratedpassages in their reading classes. To this end, 38 students were selected as the participants of this research anddivided into two groups. Students attending the experimental group (N=20) read Persian elaborated texts in whichthe Persian meanings of the specified target words were provided in apposition to them. On the other hand, studentsof the control group (N=18) were required to read the non-elaborated version of the aforementioned texts. Generally,the results of the post-test pointed to the effectiveness of this approach in incidental vocabulary learning, and theparticipants of the experimental group were found to gain a significant vocabulary improvement in comparison to thecontrol group. Furthermore, the interview suggested that students held positive attitudes to reading elaborated textsand regarded them as effective in their vocabulary learning experience. The findings of this study have implicationsfor material developers who need to reconsider the role of modified materials.
