Physical activity is a promising intervention to restore cognitive function after prolonged sedentary periods. However, little is known about the effect of short physical activity bouts on cognition especially among individuals that are used to physical activity. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to assess the impact of a single ten-minute physical activity bout on the cognitive domain of visual attention compared to sedentary behavior in a population of physically active sport students. Using a randomized controlled design, 51 healthy and physically active sport students [mean age: 22.3 (SD: 2.0) years, 33.3% female] were allocated to one of the following interventions in the break of a two-hour study course: physical activity group (running for ten minutes) and sedentary control group. Visual attention was measured post-intervention using a modified trail making test. Pre-, post-, and 30 min after intervention, perceived attention, and affective states were measured. Between-group comparisons were used to analyze whether visual attention and/or changes in perceived attention or affective states differed between groups. The physical activity group showed significantly higher visual attention post-intervention compared with the sedentary control group, p = 0.003, d = 0.89. Perceived attention, p = 0.006, d = 0.87, and arousal, p < 0.001, d = 1.68, showed a significantly larger pre- and post-intervention increase in the physical activity group compared with the sedentary control group, which was not evident 30 min after intervention. A single ten-minute running intervention in study breaks might help to restore the basal visual attentional domain of cognition after prolonged sedentary periods more effectively compared with common sedentary behavior in breaks between study lessons.

Background Inhibition processing is sensitive to aging, and an age-related decline in inhibition processing has been associated with an accelerated rate of progression to Alzheimer disease. Elderly women are two to three times more likely than age-matched men to have Alzheimer disease. Therefore, this study examined whether long-term high physical activity affects inhibitory processing, specifically among postmenopausal women. Methods In total, 251 candidates were screened using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices to assess their cognitive abilities and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (Chinese version) to assess their physical activity levels. The participants were then grouped into either a long-term high physical activity group (defined as more than 3 days of high intensity activity per week and gross metabolic equivalent minutes (MET-minutes) higher than 1,500 MET-minutes/week or a gross MET higher than 3,000 MET-minutes/week obtained through walking or other moderate or high intensity activity) or a control group and matched for demographic and health characteristics as well as cognitive scores. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded as participants performed a Go/No-go task to assess inhibition processing. Results The long-term high physical activity group (n = 30) had faster Go reaction times than the control group (n = 30), whereas no significant difference between the two groups was found in their performance accuracy on the No-go task. For the ERP results, the latency of N2 component was significantly shorter in the long-term high physical activity group than that in the control group. Discussion The results of this study suggested that long-term high physical activity may increase the efficiency of the inhibitory control system by increasing the activity of response monitoring processes.

Background: The physical, cognitive, and learning benefits of physical activity for children have already been established. However, many schools are failing to provide children with sufficient activity at school due to a crowded school curriculum. Physical activity interventions that integrate physical activity with learning is a way to enhance physical and cognitive benefits without loss of academic time. This study evaluated the preliminary efficacy and feasibility of “Thinking While Moving in English”, a primary school program that integrates physical activity into English lessons. Method: Two classes of Grade 4 students (n = 55, 10–11 years old) were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 29) or control (n = 26) conditions. The program components consisted of 3 × 40 min physically active academic lessons per week, delivered over a 4-week period. The following measures were taken at baseline and immediate post-intervention: on-task behavior, cognition (inhibition and working memory), and learning outcomes (spelling and grammar). Results: Results revealed significant improvements in on-task behavior and spelling in the intervention group, compared to the control group. There were no observed improvements in cognitive outcomes or grammar. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence for the efficacy of physically active English lessons to enhance children’s educational outcomes.

Research background and hypothesis. Lack of physical activity is influenced by a number of chronic non-infectious, mental (Corbin et al. 2001; Golden et al., 2004) and other diseases (Katzmarzyk et al., 2003). Students’ physical activity and nutrition research remains relevant, especially for those students the future profession of which is not related to physical activity and health. Research aim. The aim of the study was to estimate the relation between physical activity and health among highly and moderately active students.Research methods. All the subjects (n = 327) were grouped according to their physical activity levels. The group highly physically active students – female athletes (n = 32) and male athletes (n = 79) who were physically active more than 3000 minutes per week. The group of moderate physical activity included females (n = 47) and males (n = 169) who were physically active 600–3000 minutes per week (Ainsworth, Levy, 2004). The respondents filled in anonymous questionnaires: the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The questions dealt with the time being physically active in the last seven days. The survey took place in February–April, 2012. Research results. The subjects in high physical activity group gave a subjective evaluation of their physical activity as high (53%) and moderate (32%). The subjects in the moderate physical activity group evaluated their physical activity as moderate (60%) and high (26%). All subjects in both groups indicated that their health was good. The headache symptoms, stomach, abdominal or back pains, sadness, depression, insomnia and dizziness were rare or not common at all to subjects in high (63%) physical activity group. Sadness, depression, nervous tension and irritability, and bad mood were common to subjects in moderate (59%) physical activity group. The subjects in high physical activity group had their meals three – four times per day (76%), but subjects in moderate group ate only two - three times per day (61%). Irregular lunch and dinner were common to subjects in moderate physical activity group (63%). Discussion  and  conclusions.  Research  results  showed  that  subjects  in  high  and  moderate  physical  activity groups gave correct subjective evaluations of their physical activity forms. Also subjects in high physical activity group had breakfast, dinner and supper on regular basis and they had balanced diets more often (p < 0.05).Keywords: physical activity, health, nutrition

Abstract Despite growing numbers in the USA, immigrant populations are underrepresented in existing physical activity (PA) research, in particular Muslim immigrant women. The current study is a pilot evaluation of a culturally adapted evidence-based PA intervention for adult Somali women. Stratified randomization was used to assign participants from a sample of 27 Somali women, aged 18 to 65, to a PA group or a waitlist control group. Bicultural Somali community research team members delivered a 12-week culturally adapted intervention available in English and Somali in a community-based setting. Process and outcome evaluation assessed changes in PA, self-efficacy for PA, access to PA resources, and wellbeing as well as feasibility and satisfaction with the program. Participants in the PA group increased their moderate to vigorous PA significantly more than those from the waitlist group from baseline to post-intervention (2 (SD = 15) to 100 (SD = 53) vs 12 (SD = 21) to 32 (SD = 44) minutes per week). Participants in the PA group had significantly greater scores in wellbeing at post-intervention compared to the waitlist group though there was no significant change from pre- to post-intervention for either group. Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the program and preliminary evidence supports the general feasibility and acceptability of the program. Findings show that a culturally adapted intervention increased engagement in PA and was feasible and acceptable within a pilot sample of Somali women.

The aim of this research is to study the impact of physically active breaks, accompanied by video materials, on the level of pupils’ educational achievement and their attitudes toward physically active breaks during the teaching process in the classroom. The research lasted for two months, and the apposite sample consisted of a total of 38 pupils aged 10 to 11. The influence of physically active breaks on the educational achievement was estimated by the percentage of correct answers in the tasks of mathematics, while the Croatian version of the questionnaire Attitudes towards the Physical Activity Scale (APAS) was used for evaluating the attitudes toward physically active breaks with video materials. Differ ences between the initial and final measuring inside the same group were tested by the Student’s dependent sample t-test, while for differences between the experimental and control group the Student’s independent sample t-test was used. The obtained results showed that the ability to solve mathematical tasks in the experimental group has significantly improved when compared to the control one and that physically active breaks have a positive influence on the pupils’ attitudes toward physical activity. The implementation of physically active breaks into teaching has an impact on pupils’ productivity in the educational process, while at the same time their need for movement is fulfilled.

Abstract Background: The aim of the present study was to assess readiness to become or stay physically active according to the Stages of Change Model.Methods: The present quasi-experimental study was conducted on 100 women working in the healthcare centres of Bandar Abbas, Iran. The sampling method is clustering in type. The subjects were assigned into two groups of intervention and control. The collected data were analysed by SPSS-16 software using descriptive and inferential statistics, including independent-sample t-test, paired-sample t-test and Chi-square test.Results: Before the educational intervention, 19 subjects (0.38%) from the intervention group showed to have regular physical activity (4-5 stages). This number changed to 29 (0.58%) and 25 (0.50%) after three months and six months of intervention. A statistically significant difference was found before the intervention and 3 and 6 months afterwards (P˂.001). In the control group, no statistically significant difference was found between the pre-intervention and post-intervention (three months (P=.351) and six months (P=.687).Conclusion: The educational intervention based on the stages of behaviour change model showed to be effective in promoting the physical activity of employed women. These findings may benefit health education researchers and practitioners who tend to develop innovative theory-based interventions and strategies to increase the level of physical activity in women.

Abstract Background fear of falling and reduced fall-related self-efficacy are frequent consequences of falls and associated with poorer rehabilitation outcomes. To address these psychological consequences, geriatric inpatient rehabilitation was augmented with a cognitive behavioural intervention (“Step by Step”) and evaluated in a RCT. Methods one hundred fifteen hip and pelvic fracture patients (age = 82.5 years, 70% female) admitted to geriatric inpatient rehabilitation were randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. The intervention consisted of eight additional individual sessions during inpatient rehabilitation, one home visit and four telephone calls delivered over 2 months after discharge. Both groups received geriatric inpatient rehabilitation. Primary outcomes were fall-related self-efficacy (short falls efficacy scale-international) and physical activity as measured by daily walking duration (activPAL3™ sensor) after admission to rehabilitation, before discharge and 1-month post-intervention. Results in covariance analyses, patients in the intervention group showed a significant improvement in fall-related self-efficacy (P = 0.025, d = −0.42), but no difference in total daily walking duration (P = 0.688, d = 0.07) 1-month post-intervention compared to the control condition. Further significant effects in favour of the intervention group were found in the secondary outcomes “perceived ability to manage falls” (P = 0.031, d = 0.41), “physical performance” (short physical performance battery) (P = 0.002, d = 0.58) and a lower “number of falls” (P = 0.029, d = −0.45). Conclusions the intervention improved psychological and physical performance measures but did not increase daily walking duration. For the inpatient part of the intervention further research on the required minimum intensity needed to be effective is of interest. Duration and components used to improve physical activity after discharge should be reconsidered.

Abstract Evidence suggests physical activity (PA) improves sleep in older adults. This study examined the preliminary effect of a personalized mHealth behavioral intervention on PA and sleep in older adults. We conducted a randomized controlled pilot trial in 21 community-dwelling older adults with sleep complaints. The 24-week mHealth behavioral intervention included a 2-hour in person training session, personalized exercise prescription, real time PA self-monitoring, interactive prompts, phone consultation, and weekly financial incentives. PA and sleep were measured objectively using Actiwatch 2.0 and subjectively using questionnaires. Peripheral blood was drawn for measuring Plasma inflammatory biomarkers [interleukin 1β, 6, 8, Tumor Necrosis Factor- alpha (TNF-α), and c-reactive protein (CRP)]. Data were collected at baseline, 8-week, 16-week, and post intervention. Repeated measures ANOVA (time*group) was used to examine differences of PA and sleep across times between the two groups. Majority of participants are women (71.4%) with mean age of 73.7 (SD = 6.9). Repeated measure ANOVA showed significant (p &lt;0.05) improvement of objective and subjective PA, objective nocturnal sleep duration, self-report sleep quality (measured by Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and Insomnia Severity Index) and decreasing of sedentary time over times in the intervention group (n=11), compared to the control group. The intervention group showed significant reduction of plasma TNF-α and CRP levels at 16-week and post intervention. Interventions combining personalized PA and mHealth strategies may positively affect physical activity and sleep in older adults. A larger study is needed to test the efficacy of this intervention and the mechanisms associated with it.
