The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the kinematic characteristics of the upper limb segments during the archery shooting of Paralympic Wheelchair Class archers (ARW2—second wheelchair class—paraplegia or comparable disability) and Paralympic Standing Class archers (ARST—standing archery class—loss of 25 points in the upper limbs or lower limbs), where archers are classified according to their disability grade among elite disabled archers. The participants of this study were selected as seven elite athletes with disabilities by the ARW2 (n = 4) and ARST (n = 3). The analysis variables were (1) the time required for each phase, (2) the angle of inclination of the body center, (3) the change of trajectory of body center, and (4) the change of the movement trajectory of the bow center by phase when performing six shots in total. The ARW2 group (drawing phase; M = 2.228 s, p < 0.05, holding phase; M = 4.414 s, p < 0.05) showed a longer time than the ARST group (drawing phase; M = 0.985 s, holding phase; M = 3.042 s), and the angle of the body did not show a significant difference between the two groups. Additionally, in the direction of the anteroposterior axis in the drawing phase, the change in the movement trajectory of the body center showed a more significant amount of change in the ARW2 group than in the ARST group, and the change in the movement trajectory of the bow center did not show a significant difference between the two groups.

Although there was no significant difference in the mean score between the two groups, it was judged that kinematic performance according to each group was, in that there was a measurable variation in kinematic variables.

Introduction: Prior research into endometriosis-related pain has focused on specific aspects of the pain experience such as cyclical pain, emotional aspects of pain and certain types of pain such as dysmenorrhea and dyspareunia. However, research has paid less attention to the diversity and complexity of women’s pain experiences, which can lead to failure to recognise some symptoms as part of endometriosis and poor symptom management. Methods: We conducted qualitative semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 20 women in the United Kingdom recruited from an endometriosis self-help group with a diagnosis of endometriosis via laparoscopy. A topic guide framed questions around experiences of pain. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Women experienced multiple types of pain that they felt were caused by endometriosis and affected many different parts of the body including bowel, bladder, lungs, kidneys, nerves, upper body, lower limbs and head. These pains consisted of different conceptual categories: type, pattern and intensity. These categories came together to create a complex, interrelated experience for each individual that we termed ‘constellations of pain’ because each woman had a complex set of pain categories and no two individuals appeared to have the same pain experience. Conclusion: The complexity and diversity of endometriosis-related pain found in this study has implications for improving diagnosis, medical and non-medical pain management and improving the clinical encounter between women and healthcare professionals.

Stability plays a key role in the sport competition in football. Synchronized operation stabilization of the lower limb and trunk of the support with the dynamic movement of the contralateral limbs allow you to perform tasks specific to the discipline, eg. variety kicking of the ball. Purpose. The aim of the study was to evaluate differences in the capabilities to maintain postural stability in standing on one leg dominant and non-dominant leg with professional players including grouping variables: age, height, weight, volume of training aimed at improving the stability and general internship of football player career. Although commonly assumed that the non-dominant leg is predisposed to act more effective support for the body, the work to date have failed to identify indicated differentiation. It should be noted, however, that they were carried out on small trials in people less active, or among amateur athletes. Basic procedures. The study involved 31 professional soccer players from 1 to 5 level of division. In order to assess postural stability, each of the test performed three times a standard stability test consisting of three 20-second attempt to maintain balance on one leg becoming dominant and non-dominant leg on stabilometric platform BIODEX Balance System. For each of the lower limbs test was repeated three times. Assessment were average angular range deflections platform in the two reference planes, and the volatility of these deflections. These parameters were treated as a measure of postural stability of the respondents. Main findings. In the whole group of patients, no statistically significant differences in the possibilities to maintain postural stability in standing on one leg dominant and non-dominant leg. No significant differences were also detected when considering grouping variables. Conclusions. The results do not indicate a significant difference in the ability to maintain postural stability in standing on one leg dominant and non-dominant leg in professional soccer players.

Purpose Existing studies on human activity recognition using inertial sensors mainly discuss single activities. However, human activities are rather concurrent. A person could be walking while brushing their teeth or lying while making a call. The purpose of this paper is to explore an effective way to recognize concurrent activities. Design/methodology/approach Concurrent activities usually involve behaviors from different parts of the body, which are mainly dominated by the lower limbs and upper body. For this reason, a hierarchical method based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) is proposed to classify them. At the lower level, the state of the lower limbs to which a concurrent activity belongs is firstly recognized by means of one ANN using simple features. Then, the upper-level systems further distinguish between the upper limb movements and infer specific concurrent activity using features processed by the principle component analysis. Findings An experiment is conducted to collect realistic data from five sensor nodes placed on subjects’ wrist, arm, thigh, ankle and chest. Experimental results indicate that the proposed hierarchical method can distinguish between 14 concurrent activities with a high classification rate of 92.6 per cent, which significantly outperforms the single-level recognition method. Practical implications In the future, the research may play an important role in many ways such as daily behavior monitoring, smart assisted living, postoperative rehabilitation and eldercare support. Originality/value To provide more accurate information on people’s behaviors, human concurrent activities are discussed and effectively recognized by using a hierarchical method.

This study evaluates the static balance ability of human body based on a lower limb rehabilitation robot. According to the balance parameters obtained from the movement trajectory of the center of human pelvis, SPSS statistical software was used to verify that there was a significant difference between the two groups ( p < 0.01 ). Principal component analysis is used to allocate the weight of each parameter and establish the comprehensive evaluation value. The comprehensive evaluation value of the control group was 0.383 ± 0.038, and the experimental group was 0.875 ± 0.136. When the subject’s comprehensive evaluation value is between 0.739 and 1.011, it indicates the presence of balance dysfunction, and when it is between 0.345 and 0.421, it indicates that the balance of the lower limbs of the subject is normal. Experimental results show that this evaluation method can objectively and quantitatively reflect the static equilibrium state of human body.

Background: The aging process results in changes in the musculoskeletal system causing a decrease in function of joints, loss of elasticity and limited mobility. This condition also causes joint pain, especially in the joints supporting the body weight, namely the knee. The previous studies discussed the method of reducing pain using a contras bath which was implemented by soaking parts of the body that experience pain alternately with hot and cold water, this was difficult to apply if the pain occurs in the upper body. Modifications in contrast baths using compresses to the knee joint have never been implemented before.Objective: This study aimed to figure out the effect of the contras bath method using compresses to reduce knee joint pain in the elderly.Method: The design of this study was pre-experimental with one group of pretest-posttest. The sample used was 16 elderly who were selected by random sampling at Posyandu (a center for pre- and postnatal health care and information for elderly) in village of Sawit Gantiwarno, Klaten. Contrast bath is applied by giving compresses of warm and cold water alternately with a ratio of three minutes: one minute per-day during 20 minutes, for a week. Pain measurement is performed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) instrument.Result: The mean of knee pain before giving a contrast bath was 5.44, whereas after a contrast bath was 3.50. Bivariate analysis used Wilcoxon, it showed p value <0.05 which means there was a significant difference in knee joint pain before and after contrast baths were applied.Conclusion: Administration of contrast bath can reduce knee joint pain in the elderly.

mandatory constituents of a rehabilitation programme for patients with COPD. However, it is not known how much these exercises may induce pulmonary dynamic hyperinflation (DH). Objective. To evaluate the DH in patients with COPD exercising the upper and lower parts of the body at the same metabolic demand. Methods. Sixteen patients aged 63 ± 13 years and with a FEV1 of 1.5 ± 0.7 L (41 ± 11% pred) were studied. Patients initially performed a maximal exercise test with the arms using the diagonal movement technique. The lower limbs were exercised on a treadmill at the same metabolic demand. Results. Inspiratory capacity decreased 222 ± 158 ml (9.8%) after the upper body exercise (p &lt; 0.0001) and 148 ± 161 ml (7%) after exercise with the lower body (p = 0.0028) and a difference between the two groups was found (p &lt; 0.05). There was no difference between resting IC before upper and lower limbs exercises (p = 0.8); increase in minute ventilation and in pulmonary ventilation in percentage of maximum voluntary ventilation and reduction of expiratory time were larger in the upper limbs exercise (p &lt; 0.05). Dyspnea as measured by the Borg Scale was higher in the upper body (3.9 ± 2.2) than in the lower body (2.3 ± 1.3) at the end of the exercise (p = 0.033). Pulmonary ventilation and inspiratory capacity were correlated (p = 0.0001; r = 0.82). Conclusion. Exercise with the upper part of the body causes more DH and dyspnea than exercise with the lower part of the body at the same metabolic demand.

BACKGROUND: A lack of movement coordination characterized by the undershoot or overshoot of the intended location with the hand, arm, or leg is often found in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Standardized as Finger-to-Nose (FNT) and The Heel-to-Shin (HST) tests are the most frequently used tests for qualitative examination of upper and lower body coordination. Inertial sensors facilitate in performing quantitative motion analysis and by estimating body symmetry more accurately assess coordination lesion and imbalance. OBJECTIVES: To assess the body symmetry of upper and lower limbs quantitatively, and to find the best body symmetry indices to discriminate MS from healthy individuals (CO). METHODS: 28 MS patients and 23 CO participated in the study. Spatiotemporal parameters obtained from six Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) were placed on the upper and lower extremities during FNT and HST tests. All data were analyzed using statistical methods in MATLAB. RESULTS: Asymmetry indices of temporal parameters showed a significant increase in upper body and lower body asymmetry of MS compared to CO. However, CO have a greater kinematic asymmetry compared to MS. CONCLUSION: Temporal parameters are the most sensitive to body asymmetry evaluation. However, range of motion is completely inappropriate if it is calculated for one movement cycle.

We previously showed that dynamic, but not static, neck displacement modulates muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) to lower limbs of humans. However, it is not known whether dynamic neck displacement modulates skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA). Tungsten microelectrodes inserted into the common peroneal nerve were used to record SSNA in 5 female and 4 male subjects lying supine on a table that fixed their head in space but allowed trapezoidal ramp (8.1 ± 1.2°/s) and hold (17.5° for 53 s) or sinusoidal (35° peak to peak at 0.33–0.46 Hz) horizontal displacement of the body about the head. SSNA recordings were made before, during, and after trapezoidal and sinusoidal displacements of the body. Spike frequency analysis of trapezoidal displacements and cross-correlation analysis during sinusoidal displacements revealed that SSNA was not changed by trapezoid body-only displacement but was cyclically modulated during sinusoidal angular displacements (median, 95% CI: 27.9%, 19.6–48.0%). The magnitude of this modulation was not statistically ( P > 0.05) different from that of cardiac and respiratory modulation at rest (47.1%, 18.7–56.3% and 48.6%, 28.4–59.3%, respectively) or during sinusoidal displacement (10.3%, 6.2–32.1% and 26.9%, 13.6–43.3%, respectively). Respiratory frequency was entrained above its resting rate (0.26 Hz, 0.2–0.29 Hz) during sinusoidal neck displacement; there was no significant difference ( P > 0.05) between respiratory frequency (0.38 Hz, 0.25–0.49 Hz) and sinusoidal displacement frequency (0.39 Hz, 0.35–0.42 Hz). This study provides evidence that SSNA is modulated during neck movement, raising the possibility that neck mechanoreceptors may contribute to the cutaneous vasoconstriction and sweat release associated with motion sickness. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study demonstrates that dynamic, but not static, stretching of the neck modulates skin sympathetic nerve activity in the lower limbs.

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the Body Areas Satisfaction Levels and Gender Roles of female wrestlers. The sample of the study is constituted by 39 female wrestlers in Turkey Olympic Preparation Center in Edirne in 2017. As the data collection tool in the research; to determine the Body Areas Satisfaction Levels &ldquo;Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Scale&rdquo;, to determine the gender roles &ldquo;BEM Gender Role Inventory&rdquo; was used. In the evaluation of the data obtained, SPSS 20.0 statistics program was used. In the analysis of data, descriptive statistics; in paired comparisons, t-test; and in multiple comparisons, ANOVA test was used. As a result of statistical analysis made, it was observed that, of the female wrestlers; 15.4% had masculine, 35.9% had feminine, 17.9% had androgynous and 30.8% had unclear gender role behaviours. Significant differences were found between the score of femininity characteristics and score of masculinity characteristics and score of social acceptability characteristics (p&lt;0.05). According to body mass index (BMI), regarding the clauses on satisfaction with body areas, there is significant difference; between the normal weight and the over weight as per the clause &ldquo;I am satisfied with my lower body&rdquo;; between the overweight and the thin and the normal weight as per the clause &ldquo;I am satisfied with my central body&rdquo;; between the weak athletes and normal weight athletes as per the clause &ldquo;I am satisfied with muscle structure&rdquo;; between the normal weight and over weight athletes as per the clause &ldquo;I am satisfied with my weight&rdquo; (P&lt;0.05). There was no significant difference according to BMI variable in the clauses &ldquo;I&rsquo;m satisfied with my face&rdquo;, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m satisfied with my hair&rdquo;, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m satisfied with my upper body&rdquo;, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m satisfied with my height&rdquo; and &ldquo;I&rsquo;m satisfied with my overall appearance&rdquo;.
