While locomotive organ impairment among older people is attracting worldwide attention, this issue has not yet been widely investigated in Thailand. This study aimed to measure locomotive organ impairment prevalence and identify the determinants of locomotive function decline among middle-aged and older people in Nan Province, Thailand. This cross-sectional study included anthropometric measurements, a two-step test to investigate locomotive function, and a structured questionnaire to obtain socio-demographic and related information. Logistic regression analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to identify the determinants of locomotive organ impairment. The study participants were aged 50–87 years old (n = 165), and 71.5% of them had begun experiencing declining locomotive function; < 6 years of school education (adjusted odds ratio: 4.46), body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 (AOR: 3.06), comorbidities (AOR: 2.55), and continuous walking for <15 min (AOR: 2.51) were identified as factors associated with locomotive organ impairment. Moreover, age, knee pain, anxiety about falling in daily life, and difficulty with simple tasks were identified as factors significantly associated with exacerbated locomotive organ impairment (p < 0.05). Appropriate interventions such as guidance or follow-up and recommendations for exercises are needed to prevent locomotive organ impairment and improve treatment.

Purpose. To evaluate parent knowledge of screening and genetic testing for retinoblastoma and its potential correlation with demographics, clinical features, and socioeconomical factors. Methods. It was a cross-sectional study conducted at the ocular oncology unit of a tertiary ophthalmic center in Southern China. A face-to-face interview was administered to parents of retinoblastoma children during hospitalization. Parent knowledge was assessed using the sum score of a 7-item questionnaire. Demographics and socioeconomic status were collected from the interview, and clinical data were retrieved from the medical records. Results. A total of 126 parents of retinoblastoma children were included. Parents accurately answered 66.7% to 84.9% of each item in the questionnaire. Only 37 (29.4%) parents correctly answered all 7 questions. Parent knowledge was positively correlated with education, but it was not associated with patients’ laterality, sex, or household income. Physicians and the Internet were the major sources of parental health-related information. During the median follow-up of 492 days, 13 (61.9%) of 21 patients in the full-score group without genetic testing at baseline actually conducted testing during follow-up compared to 29 of 67 (43.3%) in the less-than-full-score group (P=0.136). Conclusion. Overall parent knowledge about retinoblastoma screening and genetic testing was moderate. Higher education was associated with greater parent knowledge. Future studies should validate our findings in other populations, especially in those with different cultural background and healthcare systems.

Abstract Background Knowledge of the community regarding mental health problems has a remarkable impact on the attitude, the help-seeking path, and prevention of stigma and discrimination against patients with mental health problems. It is also the cornerstone for designing evidence-based community mental health interventions. However, the evidence is scarce in developing countries like Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the knowledge regarding mental health problems and associated factors among communities of Jimma Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Jimma zone from March 1 to 22, 2020. A structured, pretested, and interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 420 study participants selected through a systematic sampling technique. The knowledge about mental health was measured by the adapted version of the Mental Health Knowledge Schedule tool. Data were entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 23.0 for analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was done, and p-value < 0.05 and 95% CI were used to determine the predictors of the outcome variable. Results The overall knowledge score showed (188, 44.8%) of the respondents had inadequate knowledge. Moreover, (75, 17.9%) of the respondents reported psychiatric disorders are contagious, and (138, 32.9%) mentioned leaving alone is the treatment for mental illness. Talking or laughing alone and showing strange or unusual behaviors were described as symptoms of mental illness by the majority (407, 96.9%) and (403, 96.0%) of respondents, respectively. Brain dysfunction was attributed to the cause of mental illness by most (390, 92.9%) of the study participants. Similarly, the percentage of responses that attributed the causes of mental illness to possession by an evil spirit, God’s punishment, and witchcraft were significantly high (368, 87.6%), (321, 76.4%) and (259, 67.1%), respectively. Furthermore, regression analysis showed that respondents who were able to read and write were 64% less likely to have adequate knowledge than those in secondary school and above educational status (AOR = 0.34, 95% CI (0.16–0.69)). Conclusion Knowledge of mental illness among the general public was relatively poor and higher levels of education were associated with good knowledge of mental health problems; this suggests the need for due emphasis on public education to improve the mental health literacy status of the community.

The aim of this study was to analyze the association between multimorbidity and fear of falling among hospitalized older adults. This is a quantitative study with an analytical sectional design, conducted with 83 individuals aged 60 years or older, hospitalized for falls in a referral hospital for emergency treatment in Brazil. Data collection took place through the application of a questionnaire containing socioeconomic and health information as well as characteristics of the fall. The logistic regression analysis revealed that older people who reported multimorbidity are 3.16 times more likely to be afraid of falling than older people who did not report multimorbidity, regardless of sex, age, frailty, and the number of falls in the last year. These results could aid in improving hospital approaches in relation to multimorbidity and fear of falling, decreasing preventable hospitalizations due to falls.

Introduction: Mitral Stenosis (MS) is a chronic complication seen among patients with Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). Percutaneous Transvenous Mitral Commissurotomy (PTMC) is a non surgical intervention indicated exclusively for MS with favourable valve morphology. Aim: To determine the outcomes of PTMC in middle aged Indian population in relation to clinical and haemodynamic parameters. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, between 1994 and 2019. Study was based on analysis of data from 82 patients diagnosed with MS, that underwent successful PTMC. Patients in the age group of 40 to 60 years with symptomatic MS {Mitral Valve Area (MVA) <1.5 cm2 on echocardiogram} were included in this study. Successful PTMC was defined in terms of MVA >1.5 cm2. Participants were divided into two groups based on Wilkins score of 8 as a cut-off. The continuous variables of the study subjects were described and interpreted by averages and compared between the groups by independent t-test. The pre, post and follow-up characteristics were analysed by averages and interpreted by paired t-test and confirmed by repeated measures of ANOVA. Results: Group A with Wilkin’s score ≤8 showed better results in terms of functional status improvement [New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification], MVA, mean gradient across mitral valve and Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) with p-values <0.05 after a mean follow-up period of one year. Conclusion: Long-term outcomes of PTMC is better in patients with lower Wilkin’s score than those with higher scores in terms of functional status improvement, maintenance of MVA and mitral valve mean gradient pressure. These factors favour the optimal utilisation of PTMC as an alternative to surgery especially among middle aged population.

Abstract Background Life-space mobility is reflected in comprehensive longevity and health outcomes and is also an important indicator for preventing mortality and decline in well-being among older people. However, a comprehensive framework of life-space mobility and modifiable individual and environmental factors has not been well validated among community-dwelling independent older people, for primary prevention. We examined individual and environmental factors affecting life-space mobility among community-dwelling independent older people. Methods This cross-sectional study included 3500 community-dwelling independent older people randomly selected using the National Basic Resident Registration System in Japan. Life-space mobility was measured using the Japanese version of the Life-Space Assessment (LSA) instrument, which is used to assess an individual’s pattern of mobility. Negative multivariate binomial regression analysis was performed in a final sample of 1258 people. Individual factors (including physical, mental, and social characteristics) and environmental factors (including the social and material environment) were measured and analyzed as potential factors. Results Negative multivariable binomial regression analysis, adjusted for demographics, showed that LSA score was associated with locomotive syndrome (β = − 0.48, 95% confidence interval [CI] = − 0.24 to − 0.73), depression (β = − 0.29, 95% CI = − 0.03 to − 0.55), health literacy (β = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.39–0.01), and participation in community activities (β = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.03–0.43) among individual factors, and receipt of social support (β = − 0.19, 95% CI = 0.00 to − 0.38) and social network (β = 0.29, 95% CI = 0.48–0.10) among environmental factors. Conclusions Our findings suggest that modifiable individual factors and environmental factors are related to life-space mobility among community-dwelling older people.

Abstract Purpose: To explore whether young adults with cancer have different activity limitations and participation restrictions compared to older age groups with cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional study including 654 people with cancer participating in a rehabilitation stay. Participants were in the age groups: 1) Young adults (n=121) = 18-39 years; 2) Middle-aged (n=406) = 40-64 years; and 3) older people (n=127) = ≥65 years. Outcomes were activity limitations and participation restrictions encompassing physical, role, social, and cognitive functioning, measured using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality-of-Life Questionnaire Core 30. Mean differences between age groups were calculated using linear regression analyses. Results: Young adults had a mean age of 32.1 years (SD = 5.1); middle-aged adults 53.4 years (SD = 6.8); and the older people 71.1 years (SD = 4.8). The majority of the participants were women (81.9%) with breast cancer (42.9%). Young adults had a statistically significant higher physical functioning compared to those middle-aged (-3.90: (95% CI: -6.84; -0.95)) and the older age group (-7.63: (95% CI: -11.29; -3.96)). Young adults had statistically significant lower role functioning (7.11: (95% CI: 1.13; 13.08)) and cognitive functioning (13.82: (95% CI: 7.35; 20.29)) compared to older people. There was no statistically significant difference in social functioning between the age groups. Conclusion: Young adults had different activity limitations and participation restrictions compared with higher age groups. Our findings suggest the need for further research and an increased clinical rehabilitation focus on different activity and participation challenges across age groups.

Background. Diabetes mellitus and depression are very common diseases worldwide, and the prevalence rates of both conditions are increasing rapidly. Depression among patients with diabetes mellitus results in poor glycemic control through different mechanisms. Besides, the coexistence of a chronic medical illness with depression reduces the probability of recognizing and treating depression. The study is aimed at assessing the prevalence and factors associated with depression among adults with diabetes mellitus. Methods. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among adult diabetes mellitus patients on follow-up in Mizan-Tepi University Teaching Hospital and Tepi General Hospital. A consecutive sampling technique was employed to recruit the study participants, and data were collected through face-to-face interview and medical chart review. Depression was measured using Patient Health Questionnaire-nine (PHQ-9). Binary logistic regression analysis was done and a p value of less than 0.05 was used as a level of significance. Results. The prevalence of depression among study participants was 37.0% (95% CI 32.0%-42.0%). The majority (44.7%) of the patients had mild depression, while only 2% had severe depression. Being male (AOR=1.92, 95% CI: 1.15-3.22), urban residence (AOR=3.02, 95% CI: 1.57-5.78), single marital status (AOR=7.72, 95% CI: 3.6-16.53), duration of diabetes mellitus 5 years and more (AOR=2.00, 95% CI: 1.21-3.5), and having sexual dysfunction (AOR=3.55, 95% CI: 2.13-5.91) were associated with increased odds of depression among diabetes mellitus patients. Conclusions. The prevalence of depression among diabetes mellitus was high. Therefore, the patients should be thoroughly screened for this comorbid condition, and the significant factors should be addressed during routine follow-up.

Abstract Background: The period of transition from exclusive breastfeeding to family foods, referred to as complementary feeding, covers a child from 6-23 months of age. According to World Health Organization 2015; untimely initiation of complementary feeding has negative effect on child health, growth and development and an important cause of under nutrition in children less than 5 years of age which is an underlying cause of more than 40% of morbidity and mortality. Objective: To assess the Timely Initiation of Complementary Feeding practice and Associated factors among children aged 6-23 Months in Nagelle Arsi District, Southern Ethiopia, 2019.Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out. Systematic random sampling method was used to select 400 study participants. Data was collected using structured questionnaire using face to face interview. The collected data was coded, entered in to Epi-Info version 7 and then exported to SPSS version 21 for analysis.Descriptive statistics, binary and multiple logistic regressions were used for data analysis at 95% confidence intervals. A p-value <0.05 was considered to declare statistical significance. Results: Out of 398 study participants, the proportion of timely initiated complementary feeding was 296 (74.4%) at 95%CI: (70.14, 78.66). In this study Postnatal care follow up [AOR=2.484; 95% CI: (1.478, 4.176)], ANC follow up [AOR=2.221; 95% CI: (1.276, 3.876)] and maternal counseling about timely initiation of complementary feeding at delivery place were positively associated with timely initiation of complementary feeding practice [AOR=2.362; 95% CI: (1.399, 3.986)].Conclusion and recommendation: In this study, three-fourth (74.4%) of children were initiated complementary food at six months of age which was lower than the WHO cut-off point of >80%. ANC follow up, having postnatal care visits and being counseled about timely initiation of complementary feeding at place of delivery were significantly associated with timely initiation of complementary feeding. Therefore promoting ANC follow up, postnatal care visits and counseling about timely initiation of complementary feeding at delivery place were recommended to the concerned bodies to improve the coverage of timely initiation of complementary feeding practice.
