Perceived competence is a subject’s perception of being able to interact effectively with the environment. Perceived Competence in the face of death in Nursing degree programs in which the presence of the subject of death and bereavement is key becomes more topical and relevant. The objective of this study is to determine whether this competence is improved through Nursing Studies. This study was designed as paired repeated intrasubject measures, initial measurement at the beginning of the first year and second measurement in the fourth year of the Nursing degree. One hundred and seventeen nursing students were assessed. Significant improvement is evidenced in three of the four dimensions of Perceived Competence in the face of death (Accompaniment and Communication: 25.70/29.34; Self-Confidence: 9.64/12.78; Management of Self-Fear: 13.18/14.66). These results show notable differences with their cross-sectional predecessors, suggesting the need for further studies in this field to consolidate a still developing body of knowledge.

Grit is the capacity to persevere, to have passion, and be committed to achieve goals long-term regardless of adversity or challenge. Grit provides an insight into why some nursing students succeed academically or clinically, while others do not. This quantitative cross-sectional correlational study measured levels of grit among nursing students undertaking a three-year bachelor’s degree program. All students (n = 2349) within the program were invited to complete a questionnaire which included the short grit scale (Grit-S) which measured each student’s level of perseverance and passion. Overall, it was highlighted that increased levels of grit correlated with an increase in the student’s year of study, greater perceived clinical and academic performance, not using television as a motivator for entry to nursing, being lower on the socio-economic spectrum, and being older in age. Grit was found to develop exponentially as students entered second and third years, suggesting that a balance of constant academic and clinical challenge was an impetus for many to achieve in the face of adversity, and is reminiscent of the journey of the koi fish. This paper culminates in a call for educators to consider the inclusion of creative grit forming challenges that focus on developing a student’s sense of open-mindedness within first year of undergraduate nursing programs.

AIMS: To verify the effectiveness of the simulation in the self-confidence of nursing students for extra-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, before and after, single-group study, was performed with nursing undergraduate students. The sample was recruited among university students who were in the second or third year of graduation and accepted to participate in the research. The intervention protocol consisted of individual participation in a emergency simulated clinical scenario. The simulated scenario adopted consisted of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in extra-hospital cardiorespiratory arrest, using the Mini Anne Plus® low fidelity manikin. In addition to the sociodemographic variables, students' self-confidence for emergency action was analyzed, evaluated by the Self-Confidence Scale, before and after each simulation. Marginal and homogeneous Wilcoxon homogeneity tests were applied, and the accepted significance level was 5%.RESULTS: Thirteen two undergraduate students in nursing between the ages of 18 and 38 participated in the study. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) were observed in the answers of all the questions of the Self-confidence Scale when compared before and after the simulation. There was also a statistically significant increase (p < 0.001) in cardiological, respiratory and neurological scores after simulation.CONCLUSIONS: The simulation proved to be an effective educational strategy in increasing the self-confidence of nursing students to perform extra-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

e-Learning and other innovative open learning multimedia modalities of delivering education are being introduced to enhance learning opportunities and facilitate student access to and success in education. This article reports on a study that assessed students' readiness to make the shift from traditional learning to the technological culture of e-Learning at a university in Durban. A quasi-experimental study design was employed to assess such readiness in first year nursing students before and after an appropriate educational intervention. A modified Chapnick Readiness Score was used to measure their psychological, equipment and technological readiness for the change in learning method. It was found that, while students' psychological readiness for e-Learning was high, they lacked technological and equipment readiness. Although e-Learning could be used in nursing education, technological and equipment readiness require attention before it can be implemented effectively in this institution. Fortunately, these technical aspects are easier to resolve than improving psychological readiness.

Abstrak. Remaja dengan penampilan fisik berjerawat yang tidak sesuai dengan gambaran idealnya, dikatakan memiliki kepercayaan diri tinggi apabila ia mampu menerima dengan realistis dan mensyukuri serta bertindak positif sedangkan kepercayaan diri rendah apabila remaja tersebut merasa tidak puas, malu, kecewa dan menolak keadaan dirinya. Jerawat atau acne vulgaris adalah peradangan folikel sebasea yang ditandai oleh komedo, papula, pustula, kista dan nodulus di wajah, leher, badan atas dan lengan atas. Jerawat cukup merisaukan karena berhubungan dengan menurunnya kepercayaan diri akibat berkurangnya keindahan wajah penderita. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan tingkat kepercayaan diri dengan jerawat. Jenis penelitian ini adalah korelasional dengan pendekatan waktu cross sectional (potong lintang). Subyek penelitian adalah siswa/i kelas X-XII SMA Negeri 7 Manado yang berjerawat dengan jumlah 90 responden yang dipilih dengan cara purposive sampling. Untuk menganalisis hubungan antara tingkat kepercayaan diri dengan jerawat digunakan teknik analisis Rank Spearman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai koefisien korelasi antara jerawat dengan kepercayaan diri sebesar -0,068, artinya jerawat dengan kepercayaan diri memiliki hubungan negatif dimana keeratan korelasinya sangat lemah (<0,20) sehingga dapat dikatakan tidak terdapat hubungan signifikan antara kepercayaan diri dengan jerawat (Sig=0,523). Artinya, kondisi fisik dalam hal ini jerawat bukan satu-satunya faktor yang mempengaruhi kepercayaan diri. Konsep diri, pengalaman, pendidikan merupakan faktor internal dan orang tua, teman sebaya dan masyarakat merupakan faktor eksternal yang bisa mempengaruhi kepercayaan diri. Responden yang memiliki kepercayaan diri tinggi walaupun berjerawat tidak berorientasi pada penampilan fisik semata, karena mereka merasa yakin akan kemampuan dan potensi dirinya pada hal-hal yang lain.Kata kunci: Remaja, Kepercayaan Diri, Jerawat.Abstract. Adolescents with acne in physical appearance that doesn’t like the ideal appearance, is said that have confidence when he can accept realistically, still feel grateful and act positively while low confidence if these adolescents are not satisfied, embarrassed, disappointed, and rejected themselves. Acne vulgaris is the inflammation of the sebaceous follicles characterized by comedones, papules, pustules, cysts and nodules on the face, neck, upper trunk and upper arms. Acne is troubling because it is related to the degradation of self confidence due to the beauty of the face.This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of confidence with acne. This type of study is correlational with cross sectional approach. The subjects are SMAN 7 Manado students who have acnes with 90 respondents chosen by purposive sampling. Spearman Rank analysis techniques is used to.The results showed that the correlation coefficient between acne with confidence at -0.068, meaning the relationship between acne and confidence is negative which the closeness of the correlation is very weak (<0.20) so that it canbe said there is no significant relationship between confidence with acne (Sig = 0.523). It means, the physical appearance in this case the acne is not the only factor affecting confidence. Self-concept, experience, education is the internal factors and their parents, peers and the community are the external factors that can affect confidence. Respondents with high self confidence eventhough have acnes are not oriented on their physical appearance alone, , because they feel confident in the ability and potential for him in other things.Keywords: Adolescents, Confidence, Acne.

Little is known about the experiences of nursing students during the pandemic process. This research was conducted to determine the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic process. This qualitative study was conducted with 47 first-year nursing students of a faculty that experienced the COVID-19 pandemic between 3–30 April 2020. Student nurses stated that they felt fear and anxiety; they liked this situation in the beginning due to the constraints during the pandemic process, but due to the prolongation of this process, they experienced boredom due to monotonous extraordinary days of doing the same things every day and realized that every moment before the pandemic was very valuable. In addition, the students stated that rich and poor are equal in the face of the virus and that all humanity has learned solidarity by leaving wars, fights, and superiority efforts. In this process, it was found that nursing students have negative coping methods, such as not being able to manage time well due to constraints at home and spending too much time on the phone, internet, and computer. In this context, empowering nursing students to cope with challenging emotions and thoughts starting from their educational life will contribute to the development of both students and the profession.

Aim: The aim of this descriptive study was to assess stress and ways of coping among first year nursing students.Methods: The sample consisted of 90 nursing students from baccalaureate degree programs at a university in Turkey. The research tool consisted of demographic questions, the Pagana Clinical StressQuestionnaire  (CSQ) and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ). The data collection form was performed at the end of the first clinical practice day and the re-test was performed at the end of the last clinical practice day.Results:  The average age of the population was 19.72±1.32, 78.9% of the students were female. In the research, average point of the students’ CSQ and WCQ were calculated as 50.50±9.36 and 71.06±13.64 before the clinical practice, 52.07±9.87 and 77.63±17.03  after the clinical practice respectivelyand it was found that nursing students had significantly higher stress in their clinical practices.Conclusions: Nursing students experience varying degrees of stress across clinical practices and they consistently report that their clinical experiences are stressful.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the laboratory class engagement level among nursing students in a four dimensions (that is, engagement activities, cognitive skills, other educational practices, and class atmosphere) and its difference with the demographic profile of the students. This research employed a comparative-cross sectional study design. The research was conducted in the College of Nursing, University of Hail in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the academic year 2018-2019. There were 136 nursing students that participated in this study because of the convenience sampling. This study was conducted from January to February 2019. The participants have a high level of engagement activities (2.65), cognitive skills (3.07), other educational practices (2.92), and classroom atmosphere (2.72). There is no significant relation between laboratory class engagements with age (p>0.054), academic year (p>0.382), previous education (p>0.895), gender (p>0.297), and reason for enrolment (p>0.313). Nursing students who enrolled in the fundamental of nursing practical course were highly engaged. The age, academic year, previous education, gender and reason for enrolment were not significant to the students’ engagement. The nursing educator played a major role for the students to reach their highest achievement in the attainment of their goal to meet the expectation of every nursing school towards mission vision.

INTRODUCTION: Empathy on nursing education is an important element in therapeutic communication and in the type of humanized care provided, due the strengthening of the nurse-patient relationship depends on this.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the levels of empathy on nursing students of a Higher Education Institution. Cartagena de Indias/Colombia.MATERIAL & METHODS: Cross-sectional exploratory study. A sample of 320 nursing students from first to fourth year of training, to whom the Jefferson Medical Empathy Scale (JMES) was applied in the Spanish version.RESULTS: Levels of empathy are reflected more in women than in men in general. However, some values vary with respect to the average at 3.14 levels in relation to the first year of schooling.CONCLUSION: The need for a curricular redesign and favoring empathic actions by professors worthy of being imitated by students as a way of encouraging empathy when caring for patients.

OBJECTIVE: to determine the prevalence of substance abuse and unsafe sexual practices and to analyze the relationship between them, in nursing students at the University of Seville. METHOD: quantitative methodological approach with a descriptive cross-sectional design. The population was composed of first year nursing students in the University of Seville, during the academic year 2010-2011 (N=510), with consecutive opportunistic sampling composed of students who attended class on the scheduled day (n=291). RESULTS: a high prevalence of alcohol consumption, and increased likelihood of not using protective measures during sexual practices when alcohol had been consumed, was present. CONCLUSION: these findings are consistent with those obtained in the same population in Brazil, and highlight the need to strengthen in the nursing curriculum, the transverse axis related to the prevention of substance abuse, especially alcohol.
