This article presents the results of media geographical studies of publications of American and European mass media covering conflicts and crises of different levels and scales (global, international, regional, and local). Through the prism of media-geographical views on the processes of media reality formation, the author examined mass media approaches of different countries on the topic of coverage. The research methodology included media metric analysis, rank analysis (rank distributions of the popularity of semantic categories for Internet audiences around the world), quantitative and qualitative content analysis of media texts and analysis of publications according to the criteria of the theory of peaceful journalism. The results of the rank analysis illustrated the possibilities of using this method to study the mental landscapes of different countries and regions. Special attention was paid to the interpretation of meanings and their transformation in space and time, as well as to the spatial analysis of big data (based on Google Trends statistics) with an emphasis on the dynamics of changes in media behavior and media consumption of Internet audiences in different time periods. The empirical basis for content analysis was made up of publications of online versions of 10 American and European mass media in English, German and French of 2020. The main result of the study: the majority of media texts — about 80 % — do not contribute to the search for ways of peaceful settlement of conflicts (they abound in emotionally colored vocabulary, negative markers, categorical assessments, journalists do not make attempts to deeply analyze the situation, synthesize different positions and search for creative non-violent ways to resolve contradictions). Mass media publications often become a source of increasing tension in society, the parties of conflicts are represented as antagonists in media texts, journalists fail to establish a connection between them and bridge the gap between their interests. The results of a comparative analysis of media texts according to the criteria of the theory of peaceful journalism allowed us to classify the main approaches for the mass media conflicts covering and develop a number of proposals and recommendations to use in journalistic practice.

The article presents a methodology for determining the Z2-energy saving potential of objects of the regional electrical complex. The relevance of its development is justified by the need to increase energy conservation in all sectors of the region to ensure economic stability. The implementation of energy saving stages involves three directions: reduction and useful use of energy resources, modernization and development of electrical installations using modern digital technologies and the implementation of scientifically based methods, models and techniques that can significantly increase the energy efficiency of the region's facilities. Within the framework of the third direction, a third methodology was developed. The theoretical basis of the methodology is vector rank analysis. It includes three calculation blocks: data preparation, calculation of additional resource and determination of Z2-energy saving potential. The novelty of the technique lies in the implementation of a mathematical apparatus developed for the first time on the basis of vector rank analysis, which allows taking into account the external control influence of a higher power system when determining the energy saving potential. This makes it possible to save a lot of money that is spent on electricity losses in order to modernize electrical installations, introduce new technologies or award personnel.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is the least common and most aggressive of the thyroid cancers. ATC typically represents less than 5% of all thyroid cancer diagnoses but represents up to 50% of thyroid cancer deaths. The rarity of ATC lends itself to study by population-based studies. Methods. The most recent 1973-2015 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried for patients with a diagnosis of ATC. Data on demographics, overall survival, surgical treatment, and staging were extracted. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank analysis was used to evaluate for univariate survival differences, and logistic regression analysis was used to conduct a multivariate analysis. Results. A total of 1642 patients were identified (1021 female, 621 male). The largest age group was 75-79 years old, with the majority of patients older than 60. Univariate analysis showed that age at diagnosis, AJCC overall stage, T, N, and M stage, and surgical treatment vs. nonsurgical treatment significantly affected overall survival. Conclusions. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy. It has a relatively dismal prognosis, but younger age, surgical treatment, and lower stage improve overall survival outcomes.

Background: Due to the survival of preterm neonates being continually improved, the modifiable prognostic factors of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are essential to be investigated and considered in making a suitable treatment to decrease the prevalence and effect of NEC. Many prognostic factors have been associated with the survival of neonates with NEC; however, the studies show conflicting results. Moreover, the study from developing countries regarding NEC outcomes is minimal. Here, we aimed to determine the survival of neonates with NEC and associate it with the prognostic factors. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted using medical records of neonates with NEC at our institution from January 2014 to December 2019.Results: Fifty-two neonates with NEC were involved with the overall survival of 44.2%. Log-rank analysis showed that NEC staging and birth weight were significantly associated with the survival of neonates with NEC with a p-value of 0.010 and 0.002, respectively, while sex, APGAR score, platelet count, and type of treatment were not (p = 0.068, 0.752, 0.087, and 0.343, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that sex and NEC staging were strongly associated with the survival of neonates with NEC with a p-value of 0.018 [HR = 3.10 (95% CI = 1.21–7.93)] and 0.019 [HR = 0.44 (0.22–0.87)], respectively. Conclusions: Our study shows that sex and NEC staging might affect the survival of neonates with NEC. It implies that NEC staging should be closely monitored and intervened as early as necessary to prevent further morbidity and mortality.

Abstract Background Systemic manifestations and comorbidities are characteristics of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are probably due to systemic inflammation. The histone methyltransferase SUV39H1 controls the Th1/Th2 balance. We previously reported that reduced SUV39H1 expression contributed to abnormal inflammation in COPD. Here, we aimed to determine whether impaired SUV39H1 expression in COPD patients associated with neutrophilic/eosinophilic inflammation responses and comorbidities. Methods A total of 213 COPD patients and 13 healthy controls were recruited from the Shuang Ho Hospital, Taipei Medical University. SUV39H1 levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 13 healthy and 30 COPD participants were measured by immunoblotting. We classified the patients into two groups based on low (fold change, FC < 0.5) and high SUV39H1 expression (FC ≥ 0.5) compared to normal controls. Clinical outcomes including neutrophil or eosinophil counts associated with SUV39H1-related inflammation were evaluated by Chi square analyses or Mann–Whitney U test. The correlations between the percentage of neutrophils and number of COPD comorbidities or Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) scores were performed by Spearman’s rank analysis. Results Low SUV39H1 expression group had high neutrophil counts relative to high SUV39H1expression group. In the COPD cohort, the high comorbidity group (≥ 2 comorbidities) had higher counts of whole white blood cell (WBC) and neutrophil, and lower proportion of eosinophil and eosinophil/neutrophil, as compared with low comorbidity group (0 and 1 comorbidities). The quantity of neutrophils was associated with COPD comorbidities (Spearman's r = 0.388, p < 0.001), but not with CCI scores. We also found that the high comorbidity group had more exacerbations per year compared with low comorbidity group (1.5 vs. 0.9 average exacerbations, p = 0.005). However, there were no significant differences between groups with these non-frequent (0–1 exacerbation) and frequent exacerbations per year (> 1 exacerbation) in numbers of WBC and proportion of neutrophils, eosinophils or eosinophil/neutrophil. Finally, patients with high comorbidities had lower SUV39H1 levels in their PBMCs than did those with low comorbidities. Conclusion Blood neutrophil counts are associated with comorbidities in COPD patients. Impaired SUV39H1 expression in PBMCs from COPD patients are correlated with neutrophilic inflammation and comorbidities.

Abstract Aim Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair was traditionally preformed with open surgical repair (OSR). Recently endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has increased in popularity due to its less invasive nature particularly in those deemed unfit for OSR. The EVAR-2 trial found no significant difference between BMT and EVAR in the 30 days all-cause mortality. This questioned whether EVAR was the best option in those medically unfit for OSR. Method Elective EVAR procedures from the 1st April 2012 to 1st September 2017 were analysed with Kaplan-Meier graphs. The patient data was stratified by year, age group and EVAR risk scoring. Results The all-cause mortality at 30 days was 1.8%, at 6 months it was 7%, and at 4 years it was 19.8%. There was no significant difference with log rank analysis of the year of EVAR operation and consultant (P > 0.05). The log rank analysis found a significant difference between the stratified age groups (P < 0.001) and the EVAR scoring (P = 0.032). At all time-points the RLUH EVAR patients had a lower all-cause mortality compared to the EVAR-2. At the 4-year time point, the RLUH EVAR group had lower all- cause mortality than both EVAR-1 and EVAR-2 trials. Conclusions The retrospective audit data from 2012-2017, suggest the RLUH EVAR treatment practice is not falling into the EVAR-2 trial findings. At all time-points the RLUH EVAR patients had a lower all-cause mortality compared to the EVAR-2. Therefore, it can be concluded the RLUH is not treating EVAR-2 patients.

Multiple components of the SUMOylation machinery are deregulated in various cancers and could represent potential therapeutic targets. Understanding the role of SUMOylation in tumor progression and aggressiveness would increase our insight in the role of SUMO in cancer and clarify its potential as a therapeutic target. Here we investigate SUMO in relation to conventional chondrosarcomas, which are malignant cartilage forming tumors of the bone. Aggressiveness of chondrosarcoma increases with increasing histological grade, and a multistep progression model is assumed. High-grade chondrosarcomas have acquired an increased number of genetic alterations. Using immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays (TMA) containing 137 chondrosarcomas, we showed that higher expression of SUMO1 and SUMO2/3 correlates with increased histological grade. In addition, high SUMO2/3 expression was associated with decreased overall survival chances (p = 0. 0312) in chondrosarcoma patients as determined by log-rank analysis and Cox regression. Various chondrosarcoma cell lines (n = 7), especially those derived from dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma, were sensitive to SUMO inhibition in vitro. Mechanistically, we found that SUMO E1 inhibition interferes with cell division and as a consequence DNA bridges are frequently formed between daughter cells. In conclusion, SUMO expression could potentially serve as a prognostic biomarker.
