In the machine, metallurgical, and shipbuilding industries, steel products with alloy and composite coatings based on nickel may be used. It is expedient to improve the physicochemical properties of the surface layer of products as they have a significant roughness value after thermal spraying. It is therefore important to finish the layers applied by flame spraying, where machining is used for this purpose. However, it causes a loss of coating material, which is quite expensive. Therefore, in order to reduce costs and improve the quality of the surface layer, the finishing treatment of nickel-based coatings by means of plastic working is used. Two types of plastic working were proposed: rolling and burnishing. Numerical and experimental tests of the plastic processing of alloy coatings were carried out. The roughness of the coatings after rolling decreased to 1/25 and 30% strengthening of the alloy coating matrix was determined. After burnishing, roughness was reduced to 1/12 and the alloy coatings were strengthened by 25%. Plastic working by rolling and burnishing has a beneficial effect on the surface quality of the workpiece, not only by significantly improving the roughness, but also by increasing the strength properties of the surface layers.

Coatings of metal and ceramic composite were applied on the steel specimens using the subsonic process of flame spraying. The specimens were then subjected to both cold and hot plastic working by rolling and also cold pressing by the hydraulic press. Plastic working is an alternative to machining, as the method of finishing of coats applied by flame spraying. The article presents the findings of the research into the possibility of using plastic working (hot and cold rolling and pressing) to obtain the corrosion properties of the flame sprayed Ni-Al alloy coatings and Ni-Al-Al2O3composite coatings. The alloy coatings had a single-phase structure, of the maximum 10% aluminium solubility in the crystal lattice of nickel, whereas in the composite coatings the volume content of non-metallic material Al2O3was 15% and 30 %. After finishing the adhesion reduction, cracks on the surface and cross-sections of coatings was not observed. The largest value of strain hardening of alloy coating Ni-5%Al was stated after pressing. The composite coatings obtain by flame spraying be characterized by big surface roughness (Ra= 13.3 µm). The plastic working caused decrease surface roughness. Minimum value of Raparameter was observed after hot rolling. It was found that maximal roughness was presented after pressing. The corrosion tests were performed in 0.01 M H2SO4solution by potentiokinetic technique. The article presents the effect of dispersion phase of Al2O3on corrosion properties of composite coatings on the nickel base. The corrosion rate was dependent on method of plastic working. The increasing drafts resulted in rise corrosion current density and decrease in value of corrosion potential.

Many different methods of thermal spraying are used for deposition of coatings. The use of thermal spray technology in tribological applications is growing and will continue to grow. There is a need for a strategy or methodology for selecting a surface layer composition and structure and methods of their obtaining for a given tribological application. In this paper such a strategy is proposed and its elements are discussed.

Gas flame spraying is the most accessible method of gas-thermal spraying. Pores are formed on the inner surface of the bimetallic fluid-film bearings as a result of the application of anti-friction coating on the steel substrate. The presence of such pores, the "microfibre effect", affects positively on life expectancy of fluid-film bearings. The study of the oil consumption of anti-friction coatings allows recommendation of these coatings for using in the manufacturing process of bimetallic fluid-film bearings.

Compared with traditional crystalline materials, amorphous alloys have excellent corrosion and wear resistance and high elastic modulus, due to their unique short-range ordered and long-range disordered atomic arrangement as well as absence of defects, such as grain boundaries and dislocations. Owing to the limitation of the bulk size of amorphous alloys as structural materials, the application as functional coatings can widely extend their use in various engineering fields. This review first briefly introduces the problems involved during high temperature preparation processes of amorphous coatings, including laser cladding and thermal spraying. Cold spray (CS) is characterized by a low-temperature solid-state deposition, and thus the oxidation and crystallization related with a high temperature environment can be avoided during the formation of coatings. Therefore, CS has unique advantages in the preparation of fully amorphous alloy coatings. The research status of Fe-, Al-, Ni-, and Zr-based amorphous alloy coatings and amorphous composite coatings are reviewed. The influence of CS process parameters, and powders and substrate conditions on the microstructure, hardness, as well as wear and corrosion resistance of amorphous coatings is analyzed. Meanwhile, the deposition mechanism of amorphous alloy coatings is discussed by simulation and experiment. Finally, the key issues involved in the preparation of amorphous alloy coatings via CS technology are summarized, and the future development is also being prospected.

This paper presents selected numerical and experimental results of a skew rolling process for producing balls using helical tools. The study investigates the effect of the billet’s initial temperature on the quality of produced balls and the rolling process itself. In addition, the effect of billet diameter on the quality of produced balls is investigated. Experimental tests were performed using a helical rolling mill available at the Lublin University of Technology. The experiments consisted of rolling 40 mm diameter balls with the use of two helical tools. To determine optimal rolling parameters ensuring the highest quality of produced balls, numerical modelling was performed using the finite element method in the Forge software. The numerical analysis involved the determination of metal flow kinematics, temperature and damage criterion distributions, as well as the measurement of variations in the force parameters. The results demonstrate that the highest quality balls are produced from billet preheated to approximately 1000 °C.

Since the aluminum alloy quenching is a complicated and a prompt heat-pressure coupling processing, traditional experimental tests and empirical judgments cannot explain and predict the physical and the force behavior completely during the quenching process. Dynamic simulation of the quenching process is conducted using the finite analysis method. Development laws of the stress and the strain field of the surface layer and core of the alloy during the quenching process are described based on the verification of the simulation. States and process history of the stress and the strain in each phase during the quench are obtained, which provides ponderable data and theoretical value for a fully understanding of the aluminum alloy quenching.

The effect of different composite coatings on quality of semi-moist apricot cubes mixed with cornflakes was investigated during 180 days of storage. The apricot cubes were osmotically dehydrated (OD) and coated before hot-air drying (HAD) at 60 °C. Chitosan-bees wax (CBW) and whey protein isolate-bees wax-oleic acid (WPI-BW-OA) coatings were applied after HAD and the samples were added to cornflakes. Application of OD and pectin-ascorbic acid (Pec-AA) coating (prior to HAD) and WPI-BW-OA coating (after HAD) led to significant retention of total phenol compounds, β-carotene and antioxidant activity in apricot cubes compared to uncoated and CBW-coated samples. WPI-BW-OA-coated samples gave significantly higher L* values (lighter color) and b* values (more creamy or yellowish color) and lower a* values (less reddish color) and browning values than control followed by CBW-coated apricots at any time of storage (p < 0.05). The rate of apricot moisture loss and cornflakes moisture gain was higher in uncoated apricot cubes, followed by CBW- and WPI-BW-OA-coated samples. Application of WPI-BW-OA coating was effective in retaining the crispness measured by lower firmness (Fmax) values in cornflakes upon storage. Based on the obtained results, WPI-BW-OA coating allowed effectively preserving the quality characteristics of semi-moist apricot cubes and cornflakes components in the mixed state.

Technologically, ultrajet mesodiagnostics (UJM) consists of local hydroerosive indentation by ultrajets (UJ) of water on the surface of the analyzed object (OA) and the subsequent study of the results of this minimally invasive microdestructive effect on its surface layer. Obviously, mathematical models’ construction of the functional relationship between the informative-physical signs of hydroerosive UJ destruction and the surface layer’s state parameters of various OA, primarily their defectiveness, is very important for the development of this potentially promising technology for ensuring the quality of critical products, mainly aviation and other industries. In this regard, the work proposes a probabilistic UJM model, which consists of analyzing the kinetics of the formation of an aggregate set of eroded particles, as a process caused by a combination of appropriate necessary and sufficient conditions for its implementation. The former include the topographic features of the microdefectiveness’ characteristics of the surface layer material, and the latter consist of a certain variational-force hydrodynamic effect of the diagnostic UJ on it. This approach made it possible to obtain calculated data related to probabilistic distribution of the UJ-eroded particles’ sizes of hypothetical OA, as a coordinate function describing the microdefects’ concentration in its surface layer. These functions are close to the available results of experimental UJM of typical and promising materials used in the manufacture of machinery technology.
