Mixed oxides containing zinc and lanthanum were prepared by coprecipitation in alkaline medium, followed by calcination at 400 °C. The initial precipitation product and the calcined form were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method adsorption of nitrogen at −196 °C, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Electron-Probe Microanalysis (SEM/EPM), Ultraviolet—Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-DRS) and Infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The band gap slightly changes from 3.23 eV to 3 eV by calcination. The photocatalytic performance of the solids were investigated in diluted aqueous medium, by using clofibric acid (CA), a stable and toxic molecule used as precursor in some pesticides and drugs, as test compound, possibly found in the wastewaters in low concentrations. The effects of the degradation extent, determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and total organic carbon (TOC) measurements, were investigated at different initial concentrations of CA. Within about 60 min the CA degradation is almost total at low concentration values (3 ppm) and reaches over 80% in 180 min for an initial concentration of 50 ppm. Moreover, the CA removal performance of photocatalyst remains excellent after three cycles of use: the removal yield was practically total after 60 min in the first two cycles and reached 95% even in the third cycle.

The removal of organic pollutants using green environmental photocatalytic degradation techniques urgently need high-performance catalysts. In this work, a facile one-step hydrothermal technique has been successfully applied to synthesize a Nb2O5 photocatalyst with uniform micro-flower structure for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation. These nanocatalysts are characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopies (TEM and SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). It is found that the prepared Nb2O5 micro-flowers presents a good crystal phases and consist of 3D hierarchical nanosheets with 400–500 nm in diameter. The surface area is as large as 48.6 m2 g−1. Importantly, the Nb2O5 micro-flowers exhibit superior catalytic activity up to 99.9% for the photodegradation of MO within 20 mins, which is about 60-fold and 4-fold larger than that of without catalysts (W/O) and commercial TiO2 (P25) sample, respectively. This excellent performance may be attributed to 3D porous structure with abundant catalytic active sites.

This paper reveals that photocatalytic activity of Bi2O3 under visible light towards the decolorization of Methyl Orange solution can be greatly enhanced by doping Pr into the lattice of Bi2O3 using a sol-gel method. The photocatalysts were characterized by BET, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS), respectively. The result shows that 4%Pr doped Bi2O3 possesses the best photocatalytic activity under visible light.

F-doped TiO2 by hydrothermal synthesis method is prepared in this paper. By basis of sunlight and porous nickels as the carriers, the samples were characterized by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infra-red (FT-IR) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis). The photocatalytic performances of the samples were estimated by degrading Rhodamine B. which indicates that the reaction of photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B follows the zero order kinetic law. The photocatalytic performances are increased by F-doped. And F optimum doping dosage is 2.0%. After calcination at 500°C, the photocatalytic performance of the sample has not been obvious improved.

Bi-La composite oxide was prepared by thermal decomposition of molecular precursor of BiLa(dtpa)(NO3)•3.5H2O (dtpa=Diethylene triaminepentaacetic). The effect of calcinated temperature on structure was discussed by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of samples prepared was discussed through the degradation of methyl orange. The results show that Bi-La composite oxide prepared at 500°C exhibits the best photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange (20mg/L) and the optimum amount of photocatalyst is 1.0 g/L.

Bi2S3/SnS2 heterostructured photocatalysts were synthesized from BiOI, SnCl[Formula: see text]5H2O and NH2CSNH2 using an economic and simple hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photodegradation activities of the Bi2S3/SnS2 heterostructured photocatalysts were estimated by degrading rhodamine B under simulated sunlight supplied by irradiating with a 350[Formula: see text]W Xe lamp. Bi2S3/SnS2 photocatalysts were prepared using varying percentages of Bi2S3. The sample containing 13% Bi2S3 had the most efficient photocatalyst performance among the tested samples. The photocatalytic mechanism involves heterojunctions formed in the Bi2S3/SnS2, which promoted effective separation of photoinduced electrons and holes.

Ta2O5, Ta2O5–SrO and Ta2O5–TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Ultraviolet-visible Diffuse Reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and Thermogravimetry (TGA). In synthesized series of TiO2-Ta2O5 catalysts, formation of anatase TiO2, hexagonal Ta2O5 and titanium tantalates were observed. For Ta2O5-SrO (Ta:Sr= 1:1) formation of mixed oxide and crystallinity was observed at calcinations temperature at 1100 °C (5hr). These synthesized catalysts were used for degradation study of methylene blue. The result demonstrated that the photocatalytic activity of the mixed oxides [Ta2O5-TiO2(1:1), Ta2O5-TiO2(2:1), Ta2O5-TiO2(1:2), Ta2O5-SrO (Ta:Sr= 1:1)] was higher than that of Ta2O5 alone.

An erbium ion doped Bi12TiO20 was prepared by a simple method. XRD and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were used to characterize the prepared photocatalysts. The results indicated that the erbium ion dopant had no influence on the phase of Bi12TiO20 and can extend its visible light adsorption spectra. Photocatalytic activities of the prepared samples were evaluated using methyl orange as a model organic compound. The results showed that doping with 0.5 mol% Er3+ can significantly improve the photocatalytic performance of Bi12TiO20.

A series of cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB), safranin O (SF), toluidine blue (TB), and neutral red (NR), were successfully incorporated into a silica matrix by using ultrasound irradiation during the Stöber process. Several analyses were performed, including scanning dynamic light scattering (DLS), electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen physisorption, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-vis, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The entrapped dyes on silica were evaluated in singlet oxygen (1O2) generation under visible light irradiation, by means of the photosensitized oxidation of 9,10-dimethylanthracene (DMA). According to the results, the photocatalytic performance of the silica composites was improved, and the leakage of the dye from the particles was suppressed. Among these four different types of dye-doped silica composites, the SiO2-SF composite showed the most efficient delivery of1O2.

In this work, the catalyst silver phosphate (Ag3PO[Formula: see text] with different initial ratios of Ag[Formula: see text] and PO[Formula: see text] in aqueous solution was synthesized by a simple precipitation method from AgNO3 and NH4H2PO4 which were used as the precursor. After that, the prepared samples were characterized by different techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) and decomposition evolution of rhodamine B (RhB) solution. The results indicate that the initial ratios of Ag[Formula: see text]/PO[Formula: see text] in aqueous solution can modify the morphology and also it can significantly affect the photocatalytic performance. During photocatalytic process, the rich Ag[Formula: see text] ion Ag3PO4 can form the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag nanoparticles, which inhibit the reduction of Ag3PO4 resulting in higher photocatalytic activity and stability.
