Commercial poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based cement is currently used in the field of orthopedics. However, it suffers from lack of bioactivity, mechanical weakness, and monomer toxicity. In this study, a PMMA-based cement nanocomposite reinforced with hydroxyapatite (HA) nanofibers and two-dimensional (2D) magnesium phosphate MgP nanosheets was synthesized and optimized in terms of mechanical property and cytocompatibility. The HA nanofibers and the MgP nanosheets were synthesized using a hydrothermal homogeneous precipitation method and tuning the crystallization of the sodium-magnesium-phosphate ternary system, respectively. Compressive strength and MTT assay tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical property and the cytocompatibility of the PMMA-HA-MgP nanocomposites prepared at different ratios of HA and MgP. To optimize the developed nanocomposites, the standard response surface methodology (RSM) design known as the central composite design (CCD) was employed. Two regression models generated by CCD were analyzed and compared with the experimental results, and good agreement was observed. Statistical analysis revealed the significance of both factors, namely, the HA nanofibers and the MgP nanosheets, in improving the compressive strength and cell viability of the PMMA-MgP-HA nanocomposite. Finally, it was demonstrated that the HA nanofibers of 7.5% wt and the MgP nanosheets of 6.12% wt result in the PMMA-HA-MgP nanocomposite with the optimum compressive strength and cell viability.

AbstractEuropium-doped hexagonal-mesostructured and nanotubular yttrium oxides templated by dodecylsulfate species as well as surfactant free bulk oxides were synthesized by the homogeneous precipitation method. All the as grown nanostructured or bulk materials with amorphous or poorly crystalline frameworks showed weak luminescence bands at room temperature. On calcination at 1000°C these materials were converted into highly crystalline yttrium oxides, resulting in a total increase in intensity of all the bands by one order of magnitude. In the hexagonal-mesostructured system, the main band due to the 5D0-7F2 transition for the calcined phases showed a sharp but asymmetrical multiplet splitting indicating multiple Eu sites. Concentration quenching was found at a Eu content of 3 mol% or above for these phases. In contrast, the main emission for the calcined solids in the nanotubular system occurred as poorly resolved broad band and the intensity of the main band at higher Eu content was significantly enhanced compared with those for the other two systems.

Chitosan scaffolds based on blending polymers are a common strategy used in tissue engineering. The objective of this study was evaluation the properties of scaffolds based on a ternary blend of chitosan (Chi), gelatin (Ge), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (Chi/Ge/PVA), which were prepared by cycles of freeze-thawing and freeze-drying. It then was used for three-dimensional BRIN-BD11 beta-cells culturing. Weight ratios of Chi/Ge/PVA (1:1:1, 2:2:1, 2:3:1, and 3:2:1) were proposed and porosity, pore size, degradation, swelling rate, compressive strength, and cell viability analyzed. All ternary blend scaffolds structures are highly porous (with a porosity higher than 80%) and interconnected. The pore size distribution varied from 0.6 to 265 μm. Ternary blends scaffolds had controllable degradation rates compared to binary blend scaffolds, and an improved swelling capacity of the samples with increasing chitosan concentration was found. An increase in Young’s modulus and compressive strength was observed with increasing gelatin concentration. The highest compressive strength reached 101.6 Pa. The MTT assay showed that the ternary blends scaffolds P3 and P4 supported cell viability better than the binary blend scaffold. Therefore, these results illustrated that ternary blends scaffolds P3 and P4 could provide a better environment for BRIN-BD11 cell proliferation.

Without using any templates or surfactants, flowerlike α-nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) was successfully synthesized by homogeneous precipitation method. The prepared products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and N2 adsorption-desorption. The prepared Ni(OH)2 is α-phase with specific surface area of 245.0 m2/g and shows flowerlike structure with 4-6 um in diameter.

The influence of curing time on the mechanical property of the phosphoaluminate cement (PAC) was investigated, and the mechanism was discussed as well. The phase composition and morphology of hydration products, electrical properties, porosity and pore size distribution of PAC cured different age were analyzed with XRD, EIS and MIP. The results showed PAC has the property of early-high strength, and the compressive strength of PAC cured for 1 day was about 70% of 28 days’. The main hydration products of PAC are micro-crystal phase and gel of phosphate and phosphoaluminate which formed compacter microstructure. In addition, there are no calcium hydroxide (CH) and ettringite (AFt) produced during the process of hydration. The compressive strength of PAC increased with age, which was due to more products continuously produced. The ac resistance analysis manifested as the change of the nyquist pattern and resistance value.
