The purpose of this study was to analyze the oxidative stress level and inflammatory status of saliva in the presence of certain materials used for obtaining interim prosthetic restorations. Four types of interim resin materials were investigated: a pressure/heat-cured acrylic resin (Superpont C+B, SpofaDental a.s Czech Republic, /KaVo Kerr Group), a milled resin (Telio CAD polymethyl methacrylate, Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Liechtenstein), a 3D printed resin (NextDent C&B MFH, NextDent by 3D Systems, the Netherlands), and a pressure/heat-cured micro-filled indirect composite resin (SR Chromasit, Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Liechtenstein). The disk-shaped resin samples (30 mm diameter, 2 mm high) were obtained in line with the producers’ recommendations. The resulting resin specimens were incubated with saliva samples collected from twenty healthy volunteers. In order to analyze the antioxidant activity of the tested materials, certain salivary parameters were evaluated before and after incubation: uric acid, gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), oxidative stress responsive kinase-1 (OXSR-1), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC); the salivary levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNFα) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) (inflammatory markers) were measured as well. The obtained results are overall favorable, showing that the tested materials did not cause significant changes in the salivary oxidative stress level and did not influence the inflammatory salivary status.

Aims and Objective: Sleep bruxism is a complicated disease, and its cause remains controversial.If the aetiology of bruxism is resolved, the treatment can be adjusted to the prevailing aetiological factor.Thus,the aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress level and serum prolidase activity in patients with sleep bruxism. Materials and Methods: Seventy healthy subjects and 51 patients with sleep bruxism were included in this study, and blood samples from all patients were collected. Serum samples were analysed for total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and prolidase activity. Results: The prolidase,TOS and OSI levels were significantly higher in patients with bruxism than in the healthy controls (p = 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.001, respectively). The TAS level was significantly lower in bruxism patientsthan in the healthy controls (p = 0.003). Conclusion: The increased TOS, OSI and prolidase levels and decreased TAS levels could be assumed to result in oxidative injury in patients with sleep bruxism. However, the study could not determine whether oxidative imbalance and increased serum prolidase levels could be a cause or a result of bruxism.

Background: Paraquat is nonselective bipyridyl herbicide that induces hepatotoxicity through oxidative stress. Vitamin C and chitosan have antioxidant as well as radical scavenger properties and show protective effects against reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the present study, hepatoprotective effects of chitosan and vitamin C were evaluated in common carp exposed to paraquat. Methods: While exposed to 0.02 mg. L-1paraquat for 21 days, common carp were fed chitosan (1000 mg. kg‑1 feed), vitamin C (1000 mg. kg-1 feed), and vitamin C combined with chitosan. At the end of the experiment, activities of hepatic enzymes and oxidative stress biomarkers were evaluated. Results: Paraquat induces changes in the activity of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase in liver tissue of fish. However, these enzymes were restored to normal levels in fish fed with vitamin C and vitamin C combined with chitosan following exposure to paraquat. Increased levels of malondialdehyde were observed in liver after exposure to paraquat, while glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and catalase activities and the total antioxidant levels decreased. Administration of vitamin C combined with chitosan significantly reduced malondialdehyde levels and increased the total antioxidant capacity, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and catalase activities. Conclusion: Administration of vitamin C is effective in reducing liver toxicity of paraquat. However, administrating both vitamin C and chitosan is more effective. In other words, chitosan and vitamin C have a synergic effect. They could be used as hepatoprotective agents against paraquat-induced hepatotoxicity in fish.

This in vitro study analyses the biochemical interaction between saliva and three types of dental composite resins (a direct resin, an indirect resin and a dual-cure resin used for cementation of indirect dental restorations). The resin samples were obtained following a specific protocol and in line with the producers� recommendations; the resin samples were incubated with saliva samples collected from 19 healthy volunteers. The obtained results showed that the tested composite resins did not produce significant changes in oxidative stress parameters that were analysed (albumin, uric acid, GGT / gamma glutamyl transferase, OXSR-1 / oxidative stress responsive kinase 1) and do not influence the inflammatory salivary status reflected by the levels of IL-6 - an inflammatory marker.

Objective: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the impact of hemodialysis (HD) using synthetic Helixone membrane on brain functional control reorganization and plasticity in the cortical area generated while Oxidative Stress (OS) would be the main impacting agent. Methods: Indeed, 9 chronic HD patients underwent identical brain BOLD-fMRI assessment using the motor paradigm immediately before and after the same HD sessions. To assess the oxidative stress, the same patients underwent biological-assessment, including Malondialdehyde (MDA) and Total- Antioxidant-Activity (TAOA) reported in earlier papers. Results: BOLD-fMRI maps of motor areas obtained from HD-patients before and after HD sessions revealed a significant enhancement of activation volume of the studied motor cortex after HD reflecting brain plasticity. Results were correlated with OS assessed by the measurement of MDA and TAOA; this correlation was close to 1. Conclusion: Indeed, HD enhances the inflammatory state of brain tissues reflected by the increased OS. The functional brain reaction demonstrated a functional activity reorganization to overcome the inflammatory state and OS enhanced by HD process. This functional activity reorganization reveals brain plasticity induced by OS originated by HD.

Objective This study was carried out to investigate interval exercise on Smyd1 expression and F-actin sarcomere assembly in non-infarcted myocardium of normal and myocardial infarction(MI) rats and its possible mechanism. Methods Male SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group (C), normal interval exercise group (CE), sham-operated group (S), MI group (MI), MI with interval exercise group (ME) and MI with ROS Tempol group (MT), n=10. MI model was established by left anterior descending coronary artery ligation. Interval exercise was carried out on a small animal treadmill. MT group was given an oral solution of Tempol (2mmol/L). Hemodynamics was performed to evaluate cardiac function. HE and Masson staining were used to analyze the cross-sectional area (CSA) of cardiomyocytes and collagen volume fraction, respectively. T-SOD and MDA kits were used to detect oxidative stress. H9C2 cells were treated with H2O2. Immunofluorescence staining was used to determine Smyd1 expression and F-actin sarcomere assembly. RT-qPCR and Western blotting were used to detect the gene or protein expression of Smyd1, Trx1, Hsp90, MuRF1, cTnI, α-actinin and BNP. Results Smyd1, Trx1, Hsp90, MuRF1 and BNP expression in the peri-infarcted area were up-regulated, but cTnI and α-actinin expression and F-actin assembly were decreased. The cardiac function was reduced. Both interval exercise and Tempol intervention significantly increase the CSA and expression of Smyd1, Trx1, cTnI and α-actinin, improve the antioxidation capacity and F-actin sarcomere assembly and cardiac function, reduce the expression of Hsp90, MuRF1, BNP and ROS level, and inhibit the fibrosis of myocardium. The oxidative stress level was closely related to the Smyd1 expression. Improvement of cardiac function were correlated with Smyd1 expression. H2O2 can induce oxidative stress injuries of H9C2, and its closely related to cardiomyocytes oxidative stress level and Smyd1 expression. Conclusions Interval exercise could promote antioxidant capability and physiological cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, regulate the expression of Smyd1, Hsp90 and MuRF1 in infarcted heart; so as to improve the cardiac function. Smyd1 may participate in pathologic hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes caused by oxidative stress.

Aim: To determine and compare gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and fibrinogen among obese males with and without obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Second objective was to investigate correlation between blood pressure and GGT. Methodology: Sixty-four obese males aged 20-45 years with BMI > 25kg/m2 were included by convenience sampling. The study was conducted, after obtaining ethical approval from IRB, at the Department of Physiology, Post Graduate Medical Institute, Lahore from August 2014 to May 2015. Participants having acute or chronic inflammatory conditions were excluded. Participants were screened for OSA by Berlin and STOP BANG questionnaires. Diagnosis of OSA was made by overnight portable pulse oximetry. The participants were divided into two groups. Group I had 32 obese males with OSA. Group II contained 32 obese males without OSA. After an overnight fasting of 10-12 hours blood samples were drawn. Serum fibrinogen and GGT were measured by spectrophotometer. The data was analyzed using SPSS-22. Quantitative variables were compared between the two groups by Mann-Whitney U test. Spearman correlation was used to correlate blood pressure and GGT among the participants. Results: Fibrinogen was significantly raised (p=0.015) in obese males with OSA. Systolic blood pressure (p=0.003), diastolic blood pressure (p=0.001) and mean arterial blood pressure (p<0.001) showed strong positive correlation with GGT in obese males with OSA. Conclusion: Proinflammatory, procoagulant and proatherogenic marker fibrinogen levels were significantly raised in obese otherwise healthy males with OSA. Oxidative stress marker GGT showed strong positive correlation with blood pressure in obese males with OSA.
