This review aimed to identify the potential role of integrative medicine in interventional oncology. The music therapy; stress management techniques; guided imagery, including virtual reality; clinical hypnosis; and digital sedation may all be efficient on anxiety and pain during procedures performed in interventional oncology. Beyond pharmacological sedation, the implementation of integrative medicine to interventional oncology may, therefore, improve the support and care of cancer patients, which may further create a virtuous alliance.

In this study, the authors evaluated the potential role of an activity-based guitar training program on reducing anxiety and providing fulfillment for younger relatives of cancer patients. Ten active members of KHYD (The Society for Relatives of Cancer Patients), between ages 11 and 17 participated in an 8-week guitar education program. The participants filled out two questionnaires before and after their engagement in the 8-week program, one to measure changes in their anxiety levels (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) and the other to measure changes in their general fulfillment levels (Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale). Wilcoxon signed rank test, as well as descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of data. Mean rank differences were observed to be statistically significant with respect to total state and trait anxiety scores; in both cases, the participants’ scores decreased after their engagement in the program. Statistically significant mean rank differences were also observed in the overall MSLSS scores and its “friends” and “environment” sub-dimensions; with respect to these, participants’ scores increased after their engagement in the program. Recommendations for more comprehensive, larger-scale studies are given at the end.

AbstractMicroRNAs (miRs) are small non-coding RNAs with key gene regulatory functions. Recent evidence has shown that miRs have a central role in shaping the biology of the Tumor Microenvironment (TME). The discovery that some exosomes contain high levels of miR cargo that shuttle between cells and mediate intercellular cross-talk has shifted the focus of miR research towards understanding the biological role of exosomic miRs. In this review, we highlight the emerging role of exosomic miRs in molding the tumor microenvironment towards pro-tumor conditions by altering intercellular communication. We briefly discuss some mechanisms of selective loading of miRs into exosomes, as well as emerging evidence that exosomic miRs are present in all biological fluids. Furthermore, we describe the differences in the exosomic miR signatures between cancer patients and healthy controls, and the potential role of exosomic miRs as diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic biomarkers.

In 2008, the authors’ team started an ongoing project to administer music therapy sessions for patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Studies were made conducted from the “caring” perspective to evaluate the effects of music therapy on the mental health of the patients (Inomata, 2008a, Inomata 2008b) and on the role of nurses in integrative medicine (Inomata, 2008c). On the basis of the findings from these studies, music therapy programs were designed and conducted to meet the different needs of various neurodegenerative diseases. This project was the first ever reported music therapy initiative undertaken as a multi-disciplinary collaborative work and in partnership with a patients’ group (Saji, 2010). The findings from four years of running the project are summarized as follows: (1) Music therapy helped maintain/improve the QOL(Quality of Life) level of neurodegenerative disease patients, which would otherwise deteriorate with the progress of symptoms; (2) There was an improvement in the patients’ psychological and spiritual health as exemplified by the expansion of consciousness and rebuilding of relationships; (3) The project increased the feeling of partnership among the multi-disciplinary team members; (4) Care providers shared values such as self-belief and respect for both the self and others; (5) Caring for patients’ emotional side by being compassionate and staying with them and/or listening to them resulted in a stronger care provider-patient bond; (6) Nurses were engaged in the building a healing environment as “healers,” and the patients found more hope in everyday life.

Background: Anxiety will affect the cancer patient's physiology and decrease the body's immune system, so that intervention is needed to alleviate anxiety. Objective: To find out various non-pharmacalogical therapies to reduce anxiety in cancer patients with chemotherapy. Method: The database used in this study was scopus, proquest and pubmed were limited to the last 5 years of publication from 2016 to 2020, full-text article and in english. The keywords used were "cancer" and "anxiety". This systematic review uses 10 articles that fit the inclusion criteria. Results: nonpharmacological management of cancer patients to reduce anxiety includes music therapy, autogenic training, mindfulness programs, virtual reality, guided imagery and progressive muscle training. Non-pharmacalogical therapy functions to reduce anxiety in cancer patients with chemotherapy and reduce various kinds of side effects such as anaemia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, nausea and vomiting, alopecia (hair loss), stomatitis, allergic reactions, neurotoxic, and extravasation (discharge of vesicle or irritant drugs to the patient) subcutaneous tissue resulting in pain, tissue necrosis, and tissue ulceration). Keywords: cancer; anxiety; nonpharmacologic therapy ABSTRAK Latar belakang: Cemas akan mempengaruhi psikologis pasien kanker dan menurunkan sistem imun tubuh, sehingga dibutuhkan intervensi yang dapat meringankan kecemasan. Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui berbagai macam terapi non farmakalogis untuk mengurangi kecemasan pada pasien kanker dengan kemoterapi. Metode: Database yang digunakan dalam studi ini adalah Scopus, Proquest dan Pubmed terbatas untuk publikasi 5 tahun terakhir dari 2016 hingga 2020, full text article dan berbahasa Inggris. Kata kunci yang digunakan adalah “cancer” AND “anxiety”. Systematic review ini menggunakan 10 artikel yang sesuai dengan kriteria inklusi Hasil: Tatalaksana nonfarmakologi pada pasien kanker untuk mengurangi cemas antara lain meliputi terapi musik, latihan autogenik, minfullnes program, virtual reality, guided imagery dan latihan otot progresif. Terapi non farmakalogis berfungsi untuk mengurangi kecemasan pada pasien kanker dengan kemoterapi dan mengurangi berbagai macam efek samping seperti anemia, trombositopenia, leucopenia, mual dan muntah, alopesia (rambut rontok), stomatitis, reaksialergi, neurotoksik, dan ekstravasasi (keluarnya obat vesikan atau iritan ke jaringan subkutan yang berakibat timbulnya rasa nyeri, nekrosis jaringan, dan ulserasi jaringan).
