Two new sesquiterpenoids belonging to the guaiane, 4α,9α,10α-trihydroxyguaia-11(13)en-12,6α-olide (1), and germacrane, 9β-hydroxyparthenolide-9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), classes have been isolated from the leaves of the Saudi medicinal plant Anvillea garcinii along with seven known compounds (3–9). The structures of the new metabolites were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, including one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESIMS). The antimicrobial properties of 1–9 were screened against seven different pathogenic microbes, and compounds 1–3 showed a potent antifungal activity.

AbstractPhytochemical investigation of the aerial parts ofSansevieria trifasciata, one of the most common Dracaenaceae plants, has resulted in the isolation of a new dihydrochalcone derivative named trifasciatine C (1), four previously unreported steroidal saponins as two pairs of inseparable regioisomers: trifasciatosides K/L (2/3), M/N (4/5), together with the known 1,2-(dipalmitoyl)-3-O-β-D-galactopyranosylglycerol (6), aconitic acid (7), and 1-methyl aconitic acid (8). Their structures were elucidated mainly by extensive spectroscopic analysis (1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance) and high-resolution electronspray ionization-mass spectrometry, as well as chemical methods and comparison of their spectral data with those of related compounds. Compounds2/3and4/5were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity on Hela cells, and no significant effect was observed.

A new taraxerane-type triterpenoid, codopimodol A (1), together with two known triterpenoids (2 and 3), were isolated from the EtOH extract of the roots of Codonopsis pilosula var. modesta (Campanulaceae). The structure of the new compound was identified by high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and extensive spectroscopic analyses, particularly one-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR and IR. All the compounds were first isolated from C. pilosula var. modesta. Compounds 1 and 3 exhibited potential α-glucosidase inhibitory activities.

Abstract A new compound, integracid (1), together with four known compounds were isolated from the dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) extract from Artemisia integrifolia L. The structures of compounds (1–5) were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including ultraviolet, infrared (IR), high resolution-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and extensive one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, and by comparison with data reported in the references. Antibacterial activities of the compounds were evaluated against various bacteria.

A new steroid, chaetglotone (1), together with 3 known compounds (2-4), were isolated from Chaetomium globosum, which is an endophytic fungus isolated from the root of Coptis chinensis Franch . The new compound was characterized by one-dimensional and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometer. The relative configuration and absolute configuration of 1 were further determined via the DP4 + and Early Childhood Development protocols, separately.

A new chlorinated phenolic compound, methyl-3-chloro-2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-pentylbenzoate (1) and 4 known compounds (2-5) were isolated from the Antarctic lichen, Pertusaria dactylina ( Pertusariaceae). The structure of the new compound was determined by means of One-dimensional and two dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1D and 2D NMR) and high-resolution fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (HRFABMS) experiments. The antimicrobial activities of compounds 1 to 5 against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans were evaluated. The results showed that compound 1 exhibited a weak inhibitory effect against C. albicans with an IC50 value of 67 ± 7 μg/mL.

Eupholathone, a minor diterpenoid with an unusual tetracyclic skeleton, was obtained from the seeds of Euphorbia lathyris, along with two known lathyrane diterpenoids, euphorbia factors L2 and L3. The structure of eupholathone was elucidated by detailed interpretation of its spectroscopic data, especially two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.
