A parametric investigation of the effect of impactor stiffness as well as environmental and operational conditions on impact contact behaviour and the subsequently generated lamb waves in composite structures is presented. It is shown that differing impactor stiffness generates the most significant changes in contact area and lamb wave characteristics (waveform, frequency, and amplitude). A novel impact localisation method was developed based on the above observations that allows for variations due to differences in impactor stiffness based on modifications of the reference database method and the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) time of arrival (ToA) picker. The proposed method was compared against a benchmark method based on artificial neural networks (ANNS) and the normalised smoothed envelope threshold (NSET) ToA extraction method. The results indicate that the proposed method had comparable accuracy to the benchmark method for hard impacts under various environmental and operational conditions when trained only using a single hard impact case. However, when tested with soft impacts, the benchmark method had very low accuracy, whilst the proposed method was able to maintain its accuracy at an acceptable level. Thus, the proposed method is capable of detecting the location of impacts of varying stiffness under various environmental and operational conditions using data from only a single impact case, which brings it closer to the application of data driven impact detection systems in real life structures.

Detectability of damage using Lamb waves depends on many factors such as size and severity of damage, attenuation of the wave and distance to the transducers. This paper presents a detectability model for pitch-catch sensors configuration for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. The proposed model considers the physical properties of lamb wave propagation and is independent of damage detection algorithm, which provides a generic solution for probability of detection. The applicability of the model in different environmental and operational conditions is also discussed.

In this study we compare the effectiveness of the Normalised Smoothed Envelope (NSET) method for Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based impact localisation under simulated environmental and operational conditions with respect to other ANN based localisation methods developed by other studies. It is shown that when the testing and training impact case is the same, most studies give comparably good accuracy of localisation irrespective of feature extraction method or structure geometry. However, when the testing and training impact cases are not the same, only the NSET method is able to negate the variations caused by various impact cases and provide good localisation accuracy for an ANN trained using only a single impact case thus allowing for smaller training data set size requirements and increasing feasibility for real life application.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of aircrafts is of great relevance in the present age aircraft industry. The present study demonstrates three techniques that have the potential for the SHM of multi-layered composite structures. The first technique is based on multi-transmitter-multireceiver (MTMR) technique with tomographic methods used for data reconstruction. In the MTMR, the possibility of SHM using algebraic reconstruction techniques (ART) for tomographic imaging with Lamb wave data measured in realistic materials is examined. Defects (through holes and low velocity impact delaminations) were synthetic and have been chosen to simulate impact damage in composite plates. The second technique is a single-transmitter-multi-receiver (STMR) technique that is more compact and uses reconstruction techniques that are analogous to synthetic aperture techniques. The reconstruction algorithm uses summation of the phase shifted signals to image the location of defects, portions of the plate edges, and any reflectors from inherent structural features of the component. The third technique involves a linear array of sensors across a stiffener for the detection of disbanded regions.

Abstract Composite materials are widely used in aerospace industries due to their light weight, strength, and various other desired properties. However, they are susceptible to various defects occurring during the manufacturing process or in service. Typical defects include porosity, wrinkles, and delamination. Nondestructive means of detection of the defects at any stage are of great importance to ensure quality and safety of composite structures. A nonintrusive removable Lamb wave system and accompanied methodology that is not material-dependent is presented in this paper to detect various types of typical defects in laminated composite plates, flat or curved. Through multidimensional data acquisition and processing, abnormality in waves caused by defects is captured and presented in inspection images. The methodologies are demonstrated in 2 cases: delamination in a curved plate, and wrinkles in a flat plate. Overall the results show that Lamb waves using the piezoelectric transducer and laser vibrometer system can be used for various types of defects inspection in flat or curved composite plates.

Nondestructive evaluation of carbon fiber reinforced material structures has received special attention in the last decades. Usage of Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGW), particularly Lamb waves, has become one of the most popular techniques for damage location, due to their sensitivity to defects, large range of inspection, and good propagation in several material types. However, extracting meaningful physical features from the response signals is challenging due to several factors, such as the multimodal nature of UGW, boundary conditions and the geometric shape of the structure, possible material anisotropies, and their environmental dependency. Neural networks (NN) are becoming a practical and accurate approach to analyzing the acquired data using data-driven methods. In this paper, a Convolutional-Neural-Network (CNN) is proposed to predict the distance-to-damage values from the signals corresponding to a transmitter-receiver path of transducers. The NN input is a 2D image (time-frequency) obtained as the Wavelet transform of the acquired experimental signals. The distances obtained with the NN are the input of a novel damage location algorithm which outputs a bidimensional image of the structure’s surface showing the estimated damage locations with a deviation of the actual position lower than 15 mm.

It is a well known fact that the fundamental causes of most failures in composite structures are in the forms of incipient damages such as delaminations and cracks which usually remain undetected until they grow to levels large enough to cause failure. In this study, unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite plates with known defects are investigated. The known defects are generated by impacting the composite specimens simulating external collision. A pair of transmitter and receiver was used for generation of Lamb waves and reception of signals. The received signals were monitored by scanning the receiver toward internal defect or by scanning both transmitter and receiver with confined distance over the surface of the composite plates which have known defects lie beneath them. The proper selection of incident angle and frequency are also considered. The characteristics of received signals such as amplitude, energy and wave form are analyzed. The acquired information is used to locate and to measure the size of the impact damage. The suggested method is very effective if the internal damage is presented closed to surface of the plate where the conventional pulse-echo method has problems. The proposed technique can be used widely for the real time and online monitoring of composite structures.

The main goal of building composite materials and structures is to provide appropriate a priori controlled physico-chemical properties. For this purpose, a strengthening is introduced that can bear loads higher than those borne by isotropic materials, improve creep resistance, etc. Composite materials can be designed in a different fashion to meet specific properties requirements.Nevertheless, it is necessary to be careful about the orientation, placement and sizes of different types of reinforcement. These issues should be solved by optimization, which, however, requires the construction of appropriate models. In the present paper we intend to discuss formulations of kinematic and constitutive relations and the possible application of homogenization methods. Then, 2D relations for multilayered composite plates and cylindrical shells are derived with the use of the Euler–Lagrange equations, through the application of the symbolic package Mathematica. The introduced form of the First-Ply-Failure criteria demonstrates the non-uniqueness in solutions and complications in searching for the global macroscopic optimal solutions. The information presented to readers is enriched by adding selected review papers, surveys and monographs in the area of composite structures.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is the technology of choice for outdoor positioning purposes but has many limitations when used in safety-critical applications such Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS). Namely, its performance clearly degrades in harsh propagation conditions and is not reliable due to possible attacks or interference. Moreover, GNSS signals may not be available in the so-called GNSS-denied environments, such as deep urban canyons or indoors, and standard GNSS architectures do not provide the precision needed in ITS. Among the different alternatives, cellular signals (LTE/5G) may provide coverage in constrained urban environments and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) ranging is a promising solution to achieve high positioning accuracy. The key points impacting any time-of-arrival (TOA)-based navigation system are (i) the transmitters’ geometry, (ii) a perfectly known transmitters’ position, and (iii) the environment. In this contribution, we analyze the performance loss of alternative TOA-based navigation systems in real-life applications where we may have both transmitters’ position mismatch, harsh propagation environments, and GNSS-denied conditions. In addition, we propose new robust filtering methods able to cope with both effects up to a certain extent. Illustrative results in realistic scenarios are provided to support the discussion and show the performance improvement brought by the new methodologies with respect to the state-of-the-art.

In this research, conjugated thermal and fluid dynamics simulations are presented on a modern hollow clay slab blocks filled pre-stressed reinforced concrete beam slab construction. The simulation parameters were set from Eurocode standards and calibrated using data from standardized fire tests of the same slab construction. We evaluated the temperature distributions of the slabs under transient conditions against standard fire load. Knowing the temperature distribution against time at certain points of the structure, the loss of load bearing capacity of the structure is definable at elevated temperatures. The results demonstrated that we could pre-establish the thermal behavior of complex composite structures exposed to fire using thermal and CFD simulation tools. Our results and method of fire resistance tests can contribute to fire safety planning of buildings.
