The customized bus (CB) is an innovative and environmental supplementary mode of public transport, providing demand-responsive and user-oriented service to specific passenger groups with similar travel demands, especially commuters, based on online reservations. However, sufficient travel demand is essential for the successful operation of CB. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors influencing the attraction of CB to commuters, which is tied to the ordered mode shift decisions, do no transfer to CB, remain undecided, and transfer to CB. A combination of revealed preference (RP) survey and stated preference (SP) survey is conducted among commuters in Beijing through online and offline questionnaire, collecting 1304 valid commuting demands. The ordered logit (OL) model and two-level mixed-effect ordered logit (MEOL) model are used to estimate the variable effects and the difference in five commute modes, including car, taxi, bus, rail, bus + rail, is considered. Common variables significantly influencing the transfer decision in all groups are specified in models, including familiarity to CB, seat availability, and gender. Meanwhile, travel cost, travel time, and transfer time of the current travel mode have positive effects on the attraction of CB. In addition, car ownership and accessibility to bus stations also influence the attraction of CB to certain group commuters. This paper can provide references to CB operators for formulating differentiation strategies and attracting more passengers in Beijing.

Facing challenges in parking demand-and-supply imbalance and severe road traffic congestion during peak periods in Shanghai, in this paper we develop an SP-off-RP (stated-preference-off-revealed-preference) choice model to analyze relations between parking fee and commute mode choices based on survey data collected there. The survey questionnaire collects information about travelers’ daily commute, travel choices in the SP context, and personal socioeconomic and demographic attributes. The road network and public transportation network data are also used for model development. The model includes three main travel modes: car, public transit, and non-motorized mode. Variables that significantly influence mode choice and the reasons behind it are discussed, including the parking fee, the level-of-service (LOS) of the three modes, and socioeconomic and demographic variables. In the process of model development, a random sample of full-mode commute trips in Shanghai is integrated to improve model precision. The study reveals that the new random disturbance in the SP context is relatively large. The direct elasticity of the parking fee is estimated at −0.85, which means that when the parking fee increases by 10%, the average probability of choosing a private car for the commute will decrease by 8.5%. It is also found that transit LOS improvements have potential to reduce auto use in Shanghai. The study provides references on parking pricing as an alternative policy for travel demand management in Shanghai.

The diffusion of new modes of transportation, such as carsharing and electric vehicles, makes it necessary to consider them along with traditional modes in travel demand modeling. However, there are two main challenges for transportation modelers. First, the new modes’ low share of usage leads to a lack of reliable revealed preference data for model estimation. Stated preference survey data are a promising and well-established approach to close this gap. Second, the state-of-the-art model approaches are sometimes stretched to their limits in large-scale applications. This research developed a combined destination and mode choice model to consider these new modes in the agent-based travel demand model mobiTopp. Mixed revealed and stated preference data were used, and new modes (carsharing, bikesharing, and electric bicycles) were added to the mode choice set. This paper presents both challenges of the modeling process, mainly caused by large-scale application, and the results of the new combined model, which are as good as those of the former sequential model although it also takes the new modes into consideration.

Abstract This study uses a choice experiment among 2,000 workers in Bangladesh to elicit willingness to pay (WTP) for job attributes: a contract, termination notice, working hours, paid leave, and a pension fund. Using a stated preference method allows calculation of WTP for benefits in this setting, despite the lack of data on worker transitions, and the fact that many workers are self-employed, which makes it difficult to use revealed preference methods. Workers highly value job stability: the average worker would be willing to forgo a 27 percent increase in income to obtain a one-year contract (relative to no contract), or to forgo a 12 percent increase to obtain thirty days of termination notice. There is substantial heterogeneity in WTP by type of employment and gender: women value shorter working hours more than men, while government workers place a higher value on contracts than do private-sector employees.

This paper presents a study of commuters’ responses to various employer-based transportation demand management (TDM) strategies that was conducted in the Region of Peel, Ontario, Canada. The study involves design and implementation of a web-based survey of daily commuting mode choices and an efficient design-based stated preference (SP) experiment on the mode choice effects of potential employer-based TDM strategies. For the SP experiments, the survey also collected an elicited confidence rating from the respondents. The survey of 835 random commuters was conducted in fall 2014 and spring 2015. The paper uses empirical models of mode choices (revealed and stated) and an ordered probability model of the elicited confidence rating information to evaluate the data quality. The empirical models reveal that parking cost, monthly parking scheme, indoor parking facilities, emergency ride home, and bike share had higher impacts on commuting mode choices than did bike access facilities and a carshare strategy at the workplace. In relation to respondents’ confidence on SP responses, commuters with a higher number of cars in the household and with longer commuting distances seemed more certain and confident in their responses than did others. In addition, females were found to be more confident when answering SP choice questions.

Current design manuals provide guidance on how to design exit ramps to facilitate driving operations and minimize the incidence of crashes. They also suggest that interchanges should be built along straight roadway sections. These criteria may prove ineffective in situations where there is no alternative to terminals being located along curved motorway segments. The paper investigates driving behavior along parallel deceleration curved terminals, with attention paid to the difference in impact between terminals having a curvature which is the same sign as the motorway segment (i.e., continue design), and those having an opposite curvature (i.e., reverse design). A driving simulation study was set up to collect longitudinal and transversal driver behavioral data in response to experimental factor variations. Forty-eight drivers were stratified on the basis of age and gender, and asked to drive along three randomly assigned circuits with off-ramps obtained by combining experimental factors such as motorway mainline curve radius (2 values), terminal length (3), curve direction (2), and traffic conditions (2). The motorway radius was found to be significant for drivers’ preferred speed when approaching the terminal. Terminal length and traffic volume do not have a significant impact on either longitudinal or transversal driver outputs. However, the effect of curve direction was found to be significant, notably for reverse terminals which do not compel drivers to select appropriate speeds and lane change positions. This terminal type can give rise to critical driving situations that should be considered at the design stage to facilitate the adoption of appropriate safety countermeasures.

The 20,000-student Boise State University campus is located about 3 km from the center of the city of Boise. There is a significant amount of travel between the campus and the city center as students and staff travel to the city to visit restaurants, shops, and entertainment centers. Currently, people make this trip by car, shuttle bus, bike, or walking modes. Cars and shuttle buses, which share the same road network, constitute about 76% of the total trips. As road congestion is expected to grow in the future, it is prudent to look for other modes that can fulfill the travel demand. One potential mode is an aerial tramway. However, an aerial tramway is not a common mode of urban travel in the US. This research describes how the stated preference method was used to estimate demand for a mode that does not currently exist. An online stated preference survey was sent out to 8681 students, faculty, and staff and 1821 valid responses were received. Only about 35% of the respondents expressed their willingness to choose an aerial tramway for various combinations of cost and convenience of the new mode. Respondents were also found to favor convenience over cost for the new mode.

AbstractCT colonography has emerged as the investigation of choice for suspected colorectal cancer in patients when a colonoscopy in incomplete, is deemed high risk or is declined because of patient preference. Unlike a traditional colonoscopy, it frequently reveals extracolonic as well as colonic findings. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence, characteristics and potential significance of extracolonic findings on CT colonography within our own institution. A retrospective review was performed of 502 patients who underwent CT colonography in our institution between January 1, 2010 and January 4, 2015. Of 502 patients, 60.63% had at least one extracolonic finding. This was close to other similar-sized studies (Kumar et al. Radiology 236(2):519–526, 2005). However, our rate of E4 findings was significantly higher than that reported in larger studies at 5.3%(Pooler et al. AJR 206:313–318, 2016). The difference may be explained by our combination of symptomatic/screening patients or by the age and gender distribution of our population. Our study lends support to the hypothesis that CT colonography may be particularly useful in identifying clinically significant extracolonic findings in symptomatic patients. CT colonography may allow early identification of extracolonic malignancies and life-threatening conditions such as an abdominal aortic aneurysm at a preclinical stage when they are amenable to medical or surgical intervention. However, extracolonic findings may also result in unnecessary investigations for subsequently benign findings.

Objective: Carbohydrate antigen 72-4 (CA72-4) is widely used in the diagnosis and monitoring of many cancers. However, there are few studies on the differences of CA72-4 levels in terms of age and gender. Methods: 10957 healthy subjects were divided into two groups according to gender and three age groups. The serum CA72-4 were detected. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS. Results: The CA72-4 level in female group was significantly higher than that in male group. The level of CA72-4 gradually decreased with age. Compared with the age >60 group, the CA72-4 levels were increased in the age 46-60 group and 16-45 group (P >0.05, respectively). To better observe the age difference, the age 16-45 and 46–60 group were combined into the age 16-60 group. In comparison to the age >60 group, the CA72-4 level of age 16-60 group was significantly increased (P =0.000). In the age >60 group, there was no difference between genders. Nevertheless, the difference between the sexes in the age 16-60 group was significant (P =0.023). Conclusions: The reference interval of CA72-4 for local healthy population was established. CA72-4 levels gradually decreased with the increase of age, and CA72-4 level in females aged 16-60 years (0-18.0 U/mL) was higher than in males (0-14.5 U/mL), however there was no gender difference in the age group above 60 years old (0-14.5 U/mL). Moreover, male CA72-4 was no significant difference among all age groups, while the potential mechanism of female changes with age needed further study.

Recent studies have shown that gender is the personal aspect that mostly affects mobility patterns and travel behaviors. It has been observed, for instance, that female perception of unsafety and insecurity when traveling using public transport forces them to make unwanted travel choices, such as avoiding traveling at certain times of day and to specific destinations. In order to improve the attractiveness of public transport services, this gender gap must not be overlooked. This paper aims at contributing to research in gendered mobility by investigating differences in safety and security perceptions in railway stations, and by identifying which policies could be effective in bridging any existing gap. The methodology includes the collection of disaggregate data through a mixed Revealed Preference/Stated Preference survey, and the estimation of fixed and random parameters behavioral models. Results from a medium-sized Italian railway station show that female travelers feel safer in the presence of other people; they prefer intermodal infrastructures close to the entrance of the station and commercial activities in the internal premises. Moreover, unlike male travelers, they do not appreciate the presence of hedges and greenery outside stations.
