Most sustainability studies applied to healthcare primarily focus on external viability. In particular, they look at the ability of healthcare institutions to establish an economic, environmental, social, and political consonance with their context. Conversely, limited attention has been paid to issues related to internal sustainability. The article discusses health professionals’ involvement as a human resource management practice which contributes to the viability of healthcare organizations. A sequential mediation analysis was designed to shed light on the effects of employees’ involvement on work–life balance, which is an essential ingredient of the recipe for internal sustainability. The study findings suggest that health professionals’ involvement may determine an intensification and an extensification of work efforts, which undermine their work–life balance. Nevertheless, the implications of employees’ involvement on work–life balance are positively and significantly mediated by supportive relationships at work and positive organizational climate. From this standpoint, health professionals’ involvement may act as an effective strategy to enhance the internal sustainability of health care organizations if matched with better relationships with supervisors and improved organizational climate. Whilst calling for further research to enlighten issues and challenges related to internal sustainability, the article stresses that health professionals’ involvement should be paired with an improvement of the organizational climate to contribute to an increased viability of health care institutions.

This paper focuses on testing the impact of managers’ emotional intelligence on employees work life balance in Jordanian private hospitals. 6 out of 13 hospitals were randomly selected, and 300 employees from nonmanagerial levels were surveyed using the questionnaire. 286 questionnaires were also analyzed. The most important findings of the study show that the managers in the examined hospitals have emotional intelligence skills, and the studied hospitals provide their employees with work life balance activities. The results of multiple regression revealed that there is a statistically significant impact of managers’ (empathy and social skills) on employees’ work life balance. The study revealed that there are differences of respondents’ perception of work life balance initiative due to their gender, while there are no differences of employees’ perception due to their marital status and number of children. Based on the results, the researcher recommended that more attention should be given to boost managers and employees emotional intelligence skills, and to broaden the scope of the provided work life balance activities in health care organizations and hospitals in particular.

Context:  An organizational climate is largely based on an employee's perceptions of the working conditions in which he or she engages regularly. A multifaceted concept, the organizational climate is often formed by perceptions of employee welfare, rewards, and support. Achieving work-life balance is also a part of the climate. Objective:  To learn collegiate athletic trainers' perceptions of organizational climate and specifically how it may pertain to their work-life balance. Design:  Phenomenologic study. Setting:  Collegiate practice setting. Patients or Other Participants:  Thirty athletic trainers working in the collegiate athletics setting took part in 1-on-1 phone interviews. The participants were 30.5 (interquartile range [IQR] = 7.75) years old and had been certified for 7 (IQR = 5) years and at their current position for 4 (IQR = 3) years. Data Collection and Analysis:  Participants completed a phone interview that followed a semistructured framework. All transcribed interviews were analyzed using a phenomenologic approach. Researcher triangulation, expert review, and data saturation were used to establish credibility. Results:  Athletic trainers working in the collegiate athletics setting who had positive perceptions of their work-life balance described their organizational climate as family friendly. Our participants' supervisors allowed for autonomy related to work scheduling, which provided opportunities for work-life balance. These athletic trainers believed that they worked in a climate that was collegial, which was helpful for work-life balance. In addition, the importance of placing family first was part of the climate. Conclusions:  The perceptions of our participants revealed a climate of family friendliness, supervisor support, and collegiality among staff members, which facilitated the positive climate for work-life balance. The mindset embraced the importance of family and recognized that work did not always have to supersede personal priorities.

The chapter draws from the individual and collective experiences of the authors and over 400 professionals in the field who completed a career survey. Topics focus on preparation, networking, job seeking, work–life balance, and career outlook across several sectors, including academia, health care, government, and the nonprofit arena.


This paper evaluates the impact of compensation, work life balance and work environment towards organization commitment of nurses who belong to less attended medium size health care units in and around Chennai City in India. It also deals with the impact of organization commitment towards retention of nurses. From the findings it is evident that the commitment of nurses in the hospital increases their likelihood of continuation. Also it reveals that compensation is the predominant factor followed by work life balance and work environment in enhancing organization commitment.

Objective: To illustrate the concept of work-life balance and those factors that influence it and to provide recommendations to facilitate work-life balance in athletic training practice settings. To present the athletic trainer with information regarding work-life balance, including those factors that negatively and positively affect it within the profession.Background: Concerns for work-life balance have been growing within the health care sector, especially in athletic training, as it is continuously linked to professional commitment, burnout, job satisfaction, and career longevity. The term work-life balance reflects those practices used to facilitate the successful fulfillment of the responsibilities associated with all roles one may assume, including those of a parent, spouse, partner, friend, and employee. A host of organizational and individual factors (eg, hours worked, travel demands, flexibility of work schedules, relationship status, family values) negatively influence the fulfillment of work-life balance for the athletic trainer, but practical strategies are available to help improve work-life balance, regardless of the practice setting.Recommendations: This position statement is charged with distributing information on work-life balance for athletic trainers working in a variety of employment settings. Recommendations include a blend of organizational and personal strategies designed to promote work-life balance. Establishing work-life balance requires organizations to have formal policies that are supported at the departmental and personal level, in addition to informal policies that reflect the organizational climate of the workplace. Individuals are also encouraged to consider their needs and responsibilities in order to determine which personal strategies will aid them in attaining work-life balance.

Purpose This study aims to examine the linkage between work–life balance (WLB) and organizational commitment (OC) among women employees in the healthcare sector. Design/methodology/approach Using a quantitative methodology, this paper drew upon samples of 580 health-care sector employees working in the health-care sector of Jammu and Kashmir in India. A structured questionnaire was administered to gather the required information. Data were analyzed using SMART PLS and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, in which descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance and structural equation modeling were conducted to achieve the objectives of the study. Findings Findings indicated a significant positive relationship between WLB and OC. Further component-wise analysis revealed a positive relationship between the WLB and affective and normative commitment. However, WLB demonstrated a negative association with continuance commitment. Originality/value The study also brought forth the causes and potential consequences of the work–life imbalance and stressed upon the role of organizational policies in managing the relationship between work and non-work domains and subsequently the development of OC among employees.

The new reality resulting from COVID-19 has introduced changes in the functioning of many organizations, which has an impact on their employees. Observation of management practice shows the growing importance of remote work, often employees are also more workload due to the absence of colleagues. The new situation may also be accompanied by a higher than usual level of employees’ uncertainty about their jobs, especially when the activities of their companies have been limited or suspended. All of this is likely to affect the work-life balance of the employees. Qualitative empirical research has been carried out to understand the possible consequences of a (post) pandemic on work-life balance. Presented research make presents the potential effects of the new situation for the area of work and life of employees and work-life balance and indicate possible future directions of research in this field.

The nature of their work requires the healthcare professionals to work in shifts, work overtime, report to duty at odd hours, take care of people who are sick and are sometimes terminally ill. Apart from draining them of physical energy, being in contact with such people also has a bearing on their psychological health. Striking a balance between life and work is a daunting task for the healthcare professionals. This study aimed at identifying the determinants of work life balance among Health care professionals, because they play a critical role in determining the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of health care systems. Data was collected from Healthcare Professionals like Physicians, Nurses, Clinical Support Staff and Administrative staff from both the Public and Private Hospitals in Nagpur District using a structured questionnaire. Factor Analysis revealed five factors namely Demographic Factors, Supportive Work Culture, Working Conditions, Work Provisions and Travelling distance from work that significantly affect the Work Life Balance of Healthcare Professionals. These findings will help the Healthcare Organizations to focus on Organizational interventions for helping their employees achieve a balance between the domains of work and life.
