Rail–wheel interaction is one of the most significant and studied aspects of rail vehicle dynamics. The vibrations caused by rail–wheel interaction can become critical when the radial, lateral and longitudinal loads of the vehicle, cargo and passengers are experienced while the vehicle is in motion along winding railroad paths. This mainly causes an excessive production of vibrations that may lead to discomfort for the passengers and shortening of the life span of the vehicle’s body parts. The use of harmonic response analysis (HRA) shows that the wheel experiences high vibrational amplitudes from both radial and lateral excitation. The present study describes a numerical and experimental design procedure that allows mitigation of the locomotive wheel resonance during radial and lateral excitations through viscoelastic layers. It is proven that these high frequencies can be reduced through the proper design of damping layer mechanisms. In particular, three parametric viscoelastic damping layer arrangements were analyzed (on the web of both wheel sides, under the rim of both wheel sides and on the web and under the rim of both wheel sides). The results demonstrate that the correct design and dimensions of these viscoelastic damping layers reduce the high-amplitude resonance peaks of the wheel successfully during both radial and lateral excitation.

At present, development of manufacturer’s ultrasonic cleaning tank (UCT) to match the requirements from consumers usually relies on computer simulation based on harmonic response analysis (HRA). However, this technique can only be used with single-frequency UCT. For dual frequency, the manufacturer used information from empirical experiment alongside trial-and-error methods to develop prototypes, resulting in the UCT that may not be fully efficient. Thus, lack of such a proper calculational method to develop the dual frequency UCT was a problem that greatly impacted the manufacturers and consumers. To resolve this problem, we proposed a new model of simulation using transient dynamics analysis (TDA) which was successfully applied to develop the prototype of dual frequency UCT, 400 W, 18 L in capacity, eight horn transducers, 28 and 40 kHz frequencies for manufacturing. The TDA can indicate the acoustic pressure at all positions inside the UCT in transient states from the start to the states ready for proper cleaning. The calculation also reveals the correlation between the positions of acoustic pressure and the placement positions of transducers and frequencies. In comparison with the HRA at 28 kHz UCT, this TDA yielded the results more accurately than the HRA simulation, comparing to the experiments. Furthermore, the TDA can also be applied to the multifrequency UCTs as well. In this article, the step-by-step development of methodology was reported. Finally, this simulation can lead to the successful design of the high-performance dual frequencies UCT for the manufacturers.

The use of dental hand pieces endanger dentists to vibration exposure as they are subjected to very high amplitude and vibration frequency. This paper has envisaged a comparative analysis of vibration amplitudes and transmissibility during idling and drilling with micro motor (MM) and air-turbine (AT) hand pieces. The study aims to identify the mean difference in vibration amplitudes during idling, explore different grasp forces while drilling with irrigant injection by the dentist, and various vibration transmission of these hand pieces. The study utilized 22 separate frequency resonances on two new and eight used MMs and two new and eight used ATs of different brands by observing the investigator at 16 different dentist clinics. The study adopted a descriptive research design with non–probability sampling techniques for selecting dentists and hand pieces. Statistical methods like Levene Test of Homogeneity, Welch ANOVA, independent t-test, and Games–Howell test were utilized with SPSS version 22 and MS-Excel. The results reveal that vibration amplitudes and vibration transmissibility when measured at position 2 are higher than in another position 1. Vibrations during idling for used MMs are more than AT hand pieces, and the used MM (MUD) and used AT (AUA) hand pieces differ due to their obsolescence and over-usage. Vibration amplitudes increase every time with the tightening of grasping of the hand piece. Vibration amplitudes for each grasping style of MM hand piece differ from all other grasping styles of AT hand pieces. Routine exposure to consistent vibrations has ill physical, mental, and psychological effects on dentists. The used hand pieces more hazardous as compared to newer ones. The study suggests that these hand pieces must be replaced periodically, sufficient to break between two operations, especially after every hand piece usage. Hence, the present research work can be further extended by creating some control groups among dentists and then studying the vibration amplitude exposure of various dental hand pieces and subsequent transmissibility to their body parts.

Establish the finite element model for high precision grinding machine which takes joint surface into consideration and then carrys out the static and dynamic analysis of the grinder. After the static analysis, modal analysis and harmonic response analysis, the displacement deformation, stress, natural frequency and vibration mode could be found, which also helps find the weak links out. The improvement scheme which aims to increase the stiffness and precision of the whole machine has proposed to efficiently optimize the grinder. And the first natural frequency of the optimized grinder has increased by 68.19%.

Non-smooth piecewise functional isolators are smart passive vibration isolators that can provide effective isolation for high frequency/low amplitude excitation by introducing a soft primary suspension, and by preventing a high relative displacement in low frequency/high amplitude excitation by introducing a relatively damped secondary suspension. In this investigation a linear secondary suspension is attached to a nonlinear primary suspension. The primary is assumed to be nonlinear to model the inherent nonlinearities involved in real suspensions. However, the secondary suspension comes into action only during a short period of time, and in mall domain around resonance. Therefore, a linear assumption for the secondary suspension is reasonable. The dynamic behavior of the system subject to a harmonic base excitation has been analyzed utilizing the analytic results derived by applying the averaging method. The analytic results match very well in the transition between the two suspensions. A sensitivity analysis has shown the effect of varying dynamic parameters in the steady state behavior of the system.

A technique has been developed for estimating vibrations of an automotive body structures with viscoelastic damping materials using large-scale finite element (FE) model, which will enable us to grasp and to reduce high-frequency road noise (200∼500Hz). In the new technique, first order solutions for modal loss factors are derived applying asymptotic method. This method saves calculation time to estimate modal damping as a practical tool in the design stages of the body structures. Frequency responses were calculated using this technique and the results almost agreed with the test results. This technique can show the effect of the viscoelastic damping materials on the automotive body panels, and it enables the more efficient layout of the viscoelastic damping materials. Further, we clarified damping properties of the automotive body structures under coupled vibration between frames and panels with the viscoelastic damping materials.

A successful prediction that whether a compressor blade is able to overcome the resonance fatigue and fatigue life of forced vibration is based on its harmonic response analysis.Hard coatings with metal or ceramic substrate are effective to change the natural characteristics and vibration amplitude of a compressor blade so that to improve the anti-vibration fatigue capability. In this paper, modal analysis and harmonic response analysis based on the finite element method are achieved to investigate the contributions of the two different hard coatings on the natural characteristics and vibration amplitude of a compressor blade. The two kinds of hard coatings are modeled by both anisotropic materials and involving their piezoelectric or piezomagnetic effects. The blade is modeled as an isotropic one. The natural frequencies and vibration amplitude of blade with different coating thickness are numerically calculated and compared. Results show that the hard coatings with different thickness play an important role in the natural characteristics and harmonic response analysis of the blade.

Abstract. To make vehicles more reliable and efficient, many researchers have tried to improve the rotor performance. Although certain achievements have been made, the previous finite element model did not reflect the historical process of the motor rotor well, and the rigidity and mass in rotor optimization are less discussed together. This paper firstly introduces fractional order into a finite element model to conduct the harmonic response analysis. Then, we propose an optimal design framework of a rotor. In the framework, objective functions of rigidity and mass are defined, and the relationship between high rigidity and the first-order frequency is discussed. In order to find the optimal values, an accelerated optimization method based on response surface (ARSO) is proposed to find the suitable design parameters of rigidity and mass. Because the higher rigidity can be transformed into the first-order natural frequency by objective function, this paper analyzes the first-order frequency and mass of a motor rotor in the experiment. The results proved that not only is the fractional model effective, but also the ARSO can optimize the rotor structure. The first-order natural frequency of asynchronous motor rotor is increased by 11.2 %, and the mass is reduced by 13.8 %, which can realize high stiffness and light mass of asynchronous motor rotors.
