Hydraulic system is widely used in the ship, when the diameter of tiny particles in hydraulic oil exceeds 20μm it indicates that the abnormal wear occurred and the malfunction may cause. This paper uses the light blockage method, the microfluidic detection chip for hydraulic oil detection has been designed and fabricated, a simple and effective optical detection system is developed with the signal amplification and data collection to achieve the detection of tiny particles, and finally through the JAVA programming to count the number of particles in which the diameter is more than 20μm. The results of rapid detections on iron particles with diameter between 25μm and 38μm show the good performance of the detection system and prove that the method is feasible.

Every ship will face an extension run-in stage after equipment factory test. In the paper, adjustable pitch propeller of the two ships in different wear processes are selected for the experiment and the features of hydraulic oil are obtained. With FA (factor analysis), the features of the contamination can be represented by two feature factors, large size particles factor and small size particles factor. According to comparison of the contribution of the ships two factors, large size particles factor of the ship in extension run-in stage have much more influence on the hydraulic oils status than the other ship.

Sustainability concern has brought the idea of exploring the possibility of using water as the hydraulic medium to transfer energy. The abundant resource of water, and its characteristic involving hygiene, safety and low maintenance cost provides a fascinating perspective of choosing water over hydraulic oil, due to concerns over oil disposal, contamination, costly maintenance and flammability. However, in contrast, its low boiling temperature, low viscosity, and simple molecular structure could pose danger to the operation of the hydraulic system. In order to identify these limitations, an experimental study is carried out to explore the effect of water hydraulic system. A test rig of scissor lift is fabricated and put into test by replacing the hydraulic oil with reverse osmosis water. It is found that the water hydraulic scissor lift managed to lift up to 400 kg of load, with workable water temperature of 41.4°C.

At the present time, researchers try to find alternative fluids for being used as lubricants or hydraulic fluids that are biodegradable and environmental friendly. In this study, Refined-Bleached-Deodorized (RBD) palm olein was investigated whether it is such a potential candidate. RBD palm olein could be easily acquired since it is of the type used as cooking oil. The physical properties of both conventional hydraulic oil and RBD palm olein were tested and compared by an accredited laboratory. The performance of the hydraulic systems when using both fluids as working mediums were also tested and compared. The experimental results show that temperature significantly affected the performance of the hydraulic system when using conventional hydraulic oil, whereas the performance of the hydraulic system when using RBD palm olein barely changed with temperatures. At the temperatures below 60 °C, the RBD palm olein yielded less flow rate and less energy efficiency. However, for the temperatures above 60 °C, the RBD palm olein yielded slightly more flow rate and slightly more energy efficiency. It can be confirmed from this study that RBD palm olein can be used as an alternative hydraulic fluid.

Wear debris in hydraulic oil causes most of the faults of hydraulic system and is also an important information carrier, so it is essential to check the condition of wear debris in hydraulic oil. On the basis of inductive principle and microfluidic chip technology, the design of a microfluidic chip of oil detection is presented in this paper. the relation between coil geometry parameters and inductive change of planar inductor are analyzed through the related experimental statistics, the result being that when the ferrous metallic particle flows through planar inductor, the measured inductance variation increases with the number of turns and decreases with the coil line width.

Hydraulic oil temperature with the system condition, environment temperature and heat exchange characteristics, is one of the most significant parameters affecting the performance of hydraulic system. Oil temperature directly changes oil viscosity and leakage characteristics, which affects the damping effect on system performance of hydraulic oil ratio, thereby affects the stability of the hydraulic system and dynamic response. At the same time, it also can cause the seal metamorphism and oil oxidation failure, which causes corrosion and formation of sediments, which affect the normal operation of the system, even brings harm to the equipment. Therefore, improving the working performance and reliability control through the analysis of hydraulic oil temperature is necessary.
