The article summarizes the results of the long-term complex observations of formation and development of the technosphere in the coastal zone of the Neva Bay and its impact on coastal hydro-biological communities by RSHU scientists. Natural and administrative borders of the Neva Bay are described and discussed. Evolution of the Neva Bay from «natural geosystem» to the «natural-and technical system» is monitored and analyzed. Peculiarities of coastal biological communities are presented. Anthropogenic stress-factors connected with hydrotechnical construction and dredging with high level of negative influence on coastal ecosystems are revealed. The program of original complex research of the functioning of the coastal «natural-and technical system» is proposed. Areas of hydrotechnical and dredging projects and parallel environmental monitoring in the Neva Bay are mapped. Artificially reclaimed coastal territories are recognized as core elements (knots) of the coastal technosphere of the Neva Bay. Anthropogenic macro-objects constructed on these areas, such as ports, business centers, elements of logistic structure, and recreational areas are observed from the «sustainable development» point of view. The effects of technosphere on abiotic and biotic components of coastal ecosystems are shown. To study the spatial and temporal variability of the state of the Neva Bay and its coastal zone under the influence of sedimentation processes and man-made impacts, high- and medium-resolution satellite data have been used. Some results from satellite observations are compared and discussed. Based on the research results, a map of the integral ecological vulnerability of the Neva Bay in relation to hydrotechnical works and dredging has been constructed. Information about the established levels of environmental vulnerability of various sections of the Neva Bay water area can be used for the benefit of marine spatial planning. Methods and technologies of compensatory measurements are compared and discussed in order to find optimal actions. Organizing of nature protection areas is recommended as a complex method for the support of the coastal zone sustainable development

The values of the natural environment in the subject literature are commonly indicated as an asset conducive to development shaping the competitiveness of areas with such values. The paper attempts to assess the use of endogenous potential of such areas in shaping the multifunctional, sustainable development of rural areas that have such qualities. In particular, the aim was to check to what extent the sme sector, dominating in the economic structure of rural areas, solves the key problem of labour market imbalance and population migration in environmentally valuable areas. The area of detailed research is Podkarpacie, the Polish region considered as a peripheral, border region, the least urbanized region with the highest share of areas covered by various forms of nature protection and forestation, with one of the lowest gdp per capita indicator in the country. For the purpose of implementing the research assumptions, a taxonomic unit (using the complete linkage method) consisting of powiats with the highest concentration of features characteristic for rural areas of high natural values was separated. Synthetic indicators calculated on the basis of the Hellwig taxonomic development pattern method and a positional method using Weber's median were used to assess the diversity of entrepreneurship level. The research confirmed that the non-agricultural economic activity sector is less developed in areas of high natural value. Despite positive developments in the enterprise sector, their potential is too weak an economic base for addressing unsustainable labour market problems, as evidenced by high unemployment and a high negative migration balance. This limits the use of the endogenous potential of these areas and is not conducive to the concept of multifunctional, sustainable development. Migration poses a threat to the depopulation of these areas with all the negative consequences associated with such processes. This is a challenge for the studied areas and regional policy.

Background Coastal ecosystems are blue infrastructures that support coastal resources and also aquaculture. Seagrass meadows, one of coastal ecosystems, provide substrates for epiphytic diatoms, which are food resources for cultured filter feeder organisms. Highly intensive coastal aquaculture degrades coastal environments to decrease seagrass meadows. Therefore, efficient aquaculture management and conservation of seagrass meadows are necessary for the sustainable development of coastal waters. In ria-type bays, non-feeding aquaculture of filter feeders such as oysters, scallops, and ascidians are actively practiced along the Sanriku Coast, Japan. Before the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the over-deployment of oyster culture facilities polluted the bottom environment and formed an hypoxic bottom water layer due to the organic excrements from cultured oysters. The tsunami in 2011 devastated the aquaculture facilities and seagrass meadows along the Sanriku Coast. We mapped the oyster culture rafts and seagrass meadows in Nagatsura-ura Lagoon, Sanriku Coast before and after the tsunami and monitored those and environments after the tsunami by field surveys. Methods We conducted field surveys and monitored the environmental parameters in Nagatsura-ura Lagoon every month since 2014. We used high-resolution satellite remote sensing images to map oyster culture rafts and seagrass meadows at irregular time intervals from 2006 to 2019 in order to assess their distribution. In 2019, we also used an unmanned aerial vehicle to analyze the spatial variability of the position and the number of ropes suspending oyster clumps beneath the rafts. Results In 2013, the number and distribution of the oyster culture rafts had been completely restored to the pre-tsunami conditions. The mean area of culture raft increased after the tsunami, and ropes suspending oyster clumps attached to a raft in wider space. Experienced local fishermen also developed a method to attach less ropes to a raft, which was applied to half of the oyster culture rafts to improve oyster growth. The area of seagrass meadows has been expanding since 2013. Although the lagoon had experienced frequent oyster mass mortality events in summer before the tsunami, these events have not occurred since 2011. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami deepened the sill depth and widened the entrance to enhance water exchange and improve water quality in the lagoon. These changes brought the expansion of seagrass meadows and reduction of mass mortality events to allow sustainable oyster culture in the lagoon. Mapping and monitoring of seagrass meadows and aquaculture facilities via satellite remote sensing can provide clear visualization of their temporal changes. This can in turn facilitate effective aquaculture management and conservation of coastal ecosystems, which are crucial for the sustainable development of coastal waters.

EEste artigo apresenta como discussão temática o turismo de base comunitária sob influência do processo de proteção da natureza, que tem como estratégia a criação de Unidades de Conservação, das categorias Reserva Extrativista e Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Neste contexto, considera-se a lógica peculiar da dinâmica social, ambiental e cultural da Reserva Extrativista Prainha do Canto Verde (Ceará) e da Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Aventureiro (Rio de Janeiro). O objetivo do trabalho se define na descrição e análise sobre o processo de fortalecimento do turismo de base comunitária sob influência das Unidades de Conservação instituídas na área abrangente da Prainha do Canto Verde e da Vila do Aventureiro. O caminho metodológico de trabalho compreendeu pesquisa bibliográfica, documental e de campo, desde 2003, considerando dados de projetos de pesquisa e extensão universitária, como possibilidade de cobertura ampla de fenômenos semelhantes, permitindo uma comparação dos resultados obtidos para ampliar as perspectivas de análise temática. O resultado principal alcançado na pesquisa se baseia na importância da criação da Reserva Extrativista Prainha do Canto Verde e da Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Aventureiro para a valorização e validação do turismo de base comunitária, garantindo sua premissa básica: a concepção, o planejamento, a operação e a gestão do turismo pelos agentes locais. Community-based Tourism under the influence of Nature Protection process in the Extractive Reserve Prainha do Canto Verde (CE, Brazil) and the Sustainable Development Reserve Aventureiro (RJ, Brazil) ABSTRACT This paper discusses Community-based Tourism influenced by the process of nature protection and the strategic creation of Conservation Units, and the categories Extractive Reserve and Sustainable Development Reserve. In particular, we approach the peculiar logic of the social, environmental and cultural dynamics of the Extractive Reserve of Prainha do Canto (Ceará,Brazil) and the Sustainable Development Reserve of Aventureiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to describe and analise the reinforcement of Community-based Tourism in the conservation units created in these Reserves. The methodology includes bibliographical, documental and field research conducted since 2003, and the extension and research academic projects covering similar phenomena to enable a comparison of the findings to widen the perspectives of the analysis. The main findings point to the relevance of the creation of Reserves for valorization and validation of Community-based Tourism assuring its basic assumption: the conception, planning, operation and management of tourism by local agents. In 2008, the Council of the European Union adopted the “Protocol on Integrated Coastal Zone Management” (ICZM Protocol), then ratified by Decision No. 2010/631/EU. The ICZM Protocol defines integrated coastal zone management as a dynamic and flexible process that accounts for the relations between coastal ecosystems and landscape as well as the activities and the uses that characterize coastal areas. Integrated management of coastal zones is still a critical process in terms of translating theory into practice. In this theoretical framework, strategic environmental assessment (SEA) helps to improve decision-making processes related to coastal spatial planning by integrating development goals and sustainability criteria. This study proposes a methodological approach concerning ICZM-based decision-making processes at the local level. The methodology is implemented in relation to three case studies concerning three towns located in southwest Sardinia. The results show a general consistency between the analyzed plans in terms of objectives and themes. Three specific issues are particularly relevant in terms of integration of economic and social objectives and sustainability goals, that is, relations between beach services and coastal ecosystems, protection of coastal ecosystems, and accessibility to the coastal zones.

The recent integration of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) onto underwater gliders changes the way current and sediment dynamics in the coastal zone can be monitored. Their endurance and ability to measure in all weather conditions increases the probability of capturing sporadic meteorological events, such as storms and floods, which are key elements of sediment dynamics. We used a Slocum glider equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth), an optical payload, and an RDI 600 kHz phased array ADCP. Two deployments were carried out during two contrasting periods of the year in the Rhone River region of freshwater influence (ROFI). Coastal absolute currents were reconstructed using the shear method and bottom tracking measurements, and generally appear to be in geostrophic balance. The responses of the acoustic backscatter index and optical turbidity signals appear to be linked to changes of the particle size distribution in the water column. Significantly, this study shows the interest of using a glider-ADCP for coastal zone monitoring. However, the comparison between suspended particulate matter dynamics from satellites and gliders also suggests that a synoptic view of the processes involved requires a multiplatform approach, especially in systems with high spatial and temporal variability, such as the Rhone ROFI area.
