Holy Week is one of the most important traditions in many parts of the world and a complex expression of cultural heritage. The main goal of this article is to explore which factors determine participation in Holy Week celebrations in the city of Palencia (Spain), measured through the number of processions attended. For this purpose, an econometric count data model is used. Variables included in the model not only reflect participants' sociodemographic features but other factors reflecting cultural capital, accumulated experience, and social aspects of the event. A distinction is drawn between three types of participants: brotherhood members, local residents, and visitors, among whom a survey was conducted to collect the information required. A total of 248 surveys were carried out among brotherhood members, 209 among local residents, and 259 among visitors. The results confirm the religious and social nature of this event, especially in the case of local participants. However, in the case of visitors, participation also depends on aspects reflecting the celebration's cultural and tourist dimension—such as visiting other religious and cultural attractions—suggesting the existence of specific tourism linked to the event. All of this suggests the need to manage the event, ensuring a balance is struck between the various stakeholders' interests and developing a tourist strategy that prioritizes public-private cooperation.

This book traces the origins of music, from the appearance of the relevant anatomical features, to the development of diverse forms of biological systems that figure in musical expression. It considers how music reflects our social nature and is tied to other instrumental expression in the adaptation to changing circumstances. It shows that expectancy and violations of those musical expectations linked to memory and human development are critical features in the aesthetics of musical sensibility (like other avenues of human experience). The book also examines how music is connected to movement and dance. This introduction provides an overview of the “cognitive revolution” and the emergence of a discipline called “social neuroscience,” as well as Leonard Meyer's theory of music drawn from a pragmatism based in C. S. Peirce and John Dewey's notion of inquiry. It also explains how action and embodied cognition are related to music.

Population aging is a phenomenon that has characterized most countries in the world for many years now. Also, for some time now, the literature has shown some social and economic impacts of this phenomenon. This chapter intends to address an impact of a social nature, namely gender inequality, and an impact of an economic nature, namely the global burden of diseases, to which the literature on population aging has not yet given the necessary attention. For these impacts it is important to distinguish healthy aging from unhealthy aging. In fact, healthy aging not only reduces the global burden of disease but also contributes to a reduction in gender inequalities with regard to quality-adjusted years of life.


By the 21st century, the spiritual and material monuments of Islamic civilization, the scientific heritage of scientists are evaluated all over the world as a sign of incomparable greatness. In particular, “the invaluable contribution of great scientists and thinkers to the development of world science and culture in the Middle Ages and beyond, the first Eastern Renaissance in world history - the Muslim Renaissance - is rightfully recognized by the world scientific community”. One of the most important branches of Islamic science is the science of meaning ( علم المعاني ). An attempt to understand the charm of the Quranic language in the reality of language and speech means the word “xabar”, “inshāʼ”, “musnad”, “musnad ilayhi”, “qaṣr”, “faṣl”, “vaṣl”, “iyjāz”, “iṭnāb”, “musāva” such as grammatical, lexical, semantic, stylistic, artistic and aesthetic indicators, the social nature of language, ways of expression, language features of the word. The science of meaning is a set of linguo-poetic views, and it is important to show its place in the classification of modern linguistics.

A study of passages from the Bahá’í writings indicates that art can render services of a mystical, moral, and social nature. Such services taken together constitute the spiritual role of art, whose highest purpose is to ennoble the individual soul and the collective life of humanity. When playing such a role, art draws its inspiration from the vision of life unfolded in divine Revelation, harmonizes with the fundamental teachings of the world’s major religions, and seeks to reinforce their original objective, which is to foster spiritual growth and social harmony. In realizing a spiritual role, art employs beauty, whose purpose both in the world of creation and in the realm of human creativity is to attract the soul toward its Creator and to draw it into a spiral or spiritual growth. Art also employs emotion, which can reinforce the various facets of the service art renders.

Summary Theatre offers an opportunity for communities to think with and through fiction. We come together to hear and tell stories because it is moving, both in the literal and the figurative sense: it changes us. Theories from cognitive science of embodied cognition make clear that making sense of theatre is a full-bodied affair. In this essay, I argue that we can see moments when theatre invited its audience to think in new ways by shifting theatrical conventions. I explore how a contemporary production of Hamlet, Pan Pan’s production of “The Rehearsal: Playing the Dane”, brings its audience to question the stability of the self and text by altering the conventions around casting and representation. This is theatre that I may not understand in a traditional way, but this gives me a way to understand a new way of thinking about the world around me. It is theatre I can use.

The clinical practice in clinical phenomenology, be it psychiatric or psychological, is based on the philosophical inspiration adopted by the clinician. In my case, I see the world ambiguously and Merleau-Ponty is my philosopher of inspiration. Through these lenses, I see the phenomenon I study as a researcher or the way I relate to my patient as a psychotherapist. I also look through these lenses to write this essay about my lived experience in the pandemic of COVID-19 in 2020. COVID-19 reminds us that we are human and vulnerable. Assuming this vulnerability in its full existential meaning can be empowering, considering vulnerability in its intrinsic sense as a place in life with its ethical and political meanings. In the case of the lived experience of the COVID-19 pandemic in northeastern Brazil, contact with vulnerability, in many situations, is confused with precariousness, which has a more social nature. I also mention that the quarantine imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic required us to communicate with our families and work at home exclusively through video and audio on our computers. Under these circumstances, it is worth reflecting on the changes that we are experiencing in our own functioning, in our lived space and lived body. On the other hand, the lack of fluidity in our existential movement in the lived time is concerning as it affects the structural core of the human being and existential continuity. In this context, I finally present some preliminary thoughts about on-online psychotherapy through phenomenological lens.

The world is shifting. The pandemic has changed paradigms, and people have reacted by trying to find solutions for problems. New challenges arise, and, more than ever, people must understand that the future depends on the way they face the present. The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the need to collectively work in accordance to our realities. Co-creation, entrepreneurship, holistic thinking, and creativity are huge contributions that can make a difference. This chapter aims to explain and share best practices of Portugal and Brazil to mitigate COVID-19 impacts. Using primary data, a presentation is made between a varied set of measures and actions carried out by the two countries, similar in language but different in cultures and realities. The results could be practical guidelines for potential implementation elsewhere. The conclusion seems to point out that solutions require involvement for all stakeholders, with innovation and critical behaviour as means to pursue the path of sustainable development.
