Assessing the quality of qualitative research to ensure rigour in the findings is critical, especially if findings are to contribute to theory and be utilised in practice. However, teaching students concepts of rigour and how to apply them to their research is challenging. This article presents a generic framework of rigour with four critical dimensions—Trustworthiness, Auditability, Credibility and Transferability (TACT) intended to teach issues of rigour to postgraduate students and those new to qualitative research methodology. The framework enables them to explore the key dimensions necessary for assessing the rigour of qualitative research studies and checklist questions against each of the dimensions. TACT was offered through 10 workshops, attended by 64 participants. Participants positively evaluated the workshops and reported that the workshops enable them to learn the principles of qualitative research and better understanding issues of rigour. Work presented in the article is part of a large research programme investigating the pedagogy of research methods in higher education.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of quality in university governance in Indonesia. The researcher designed this study with an approach of qualitative research approach with Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method. Participants come from 25 universities throughout Indonesia. Participants are leaders of higher education ranging from the head of the study program to the rector. The result of the focus group discussion shows that the quality of higher education will decrease if there is the scarcity of qualified lecturers. Declining quality of higher education will affect the number of students. Finally, if the student decline happens continuously, then higher education can close. So quality is a top priority in university governance.

Invitation to review a manuscript for publication marks an exciting milestone in graduate and postgraduate students’ training. Yet, peer reviewing is seldom explicitly taught. First-time reviewers approaching this task often lack mentorship, guidelines, and confidence. The ongoing debate about how to judge the quality of qualitative research can further complicate the task. In this article, we introduce an innovative model for conducting group peer reviews in the context of qualitative research training. After setting out the model's principles and process, we discuss its merits and reflect on our experiences as trainees and supervisor using the approach. In addition to providing opportunities for mentorship in appraisal methods, writing strategies, and approaches for framing constructive feedback, we suggest the model has the potential to advance trainees’ development as collegial peers and their overall learning as qualitative researchers. Finally, we discuss potential ways forward to extend the model in other contexts.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that, important as reflexivity is, it does not constitute the gold standard of qualitative research. Instead the author makes a plea for the use of sociological imagination. Design/methodology/approach – The paper makes use of data from the ISI Web of Science database to demonstrate the increasing popularity of the concept of reflexivity. Findings – All researchers exercise reflexivity in as much as carrying out research alters both the subject and the object of the research. Conscious reflexivity enables researchers to question their assumptions and consequences of their work but does not guarantee high quality research. For this, creative imagination in recognizing the creative possibilities afforded by the data, are essential. Originality/value – Arguing against the emerging orthodoxy of qualitative research methodology, the original proposal of this paper lies in its plea to relax methodological strictures and judge the quality of research pragmatically in terms of its scientific value and social usefulness.

Abstract In India there are many higher education institutions and with growing population the number is incrementing day by day. Before taking admission in an institution student analyse the facilities and standard of the institution from the website and by taking peer opinions. Student contentment and feedback is gaining larger importance with mushrooming higher education institutions in India. This paper illustrates a method to analyse student feedback obtained from undergraduate and postgraduate students to assess the Student Satisfaction Index. The feedback is taken on overall infrastructure facilities, academic environment, services offered by the college, additional activities for overall development, quality of experiences and outcomes. This paper gives detailed information about the methodology, calculation and outcome of the exercise utilizing Likert scale analysis. With the recent emerging trends, this innovative method offers flexibility to integrate more parameters, group certain parameters to get feedback on a particular issue and transmute the type of questions with changing environment and structure. The analysis is done using a statistical method. The sample result directly highlights the importance and flexibility of method to evaluate overall satisfaction, satisfaction cognate to a single parameter and satisfaction for questions grouped together underlining some paramount aspects of higher education.

Összefoglaló. A kutatás fókuszában a Kárpát-medencei magyar felsőoktatási intézményeket érintő hallgatói pályák feltérképezése áll. E témakör fő kérdése, hogy milyen mértékben és milyen minőségben valósul meg a Kárpát-medencei magyar felsőoktatásban a hallgatói mobilitás. A kvalitatív kutatásaink alapján sikerült feltérképeznünk a Kárpát-medencei magyar felsőoktatási intézményeket érintő hallgatói pályákat. A kutatás keretében elemeztük a hallgatók mobilitási hajlandóságát, attitűdjét, a mobilitás lehetséges akadályait, valamint az ezekre kínálkozó megoldási alternatívákat is feltérképeztük. Summary. The focus of the research is the mapping of students’ career paths outside the Carpathian Basin and of Hungarian higher education institutions in the Carpathian Basin. The main question in this topic is the extent and quality of student mobility in Hungarian higher education in the Carpathian Basin. Through the methodology of qualitative research, we have been able to map in detail the depths of student careers in Hungarian higher education institutions in the Carpathian Basin. Within the framework of the research, we analysed the students’ willingness to move, their attitudes, the possible obstacles to mobility, and the solutions available to them.

Phenomenography is a qualitative research methodology that is often adopted by researchers to investigate people’s lived experience of the phenomena around them. Within the phenomenographic research tradition, there has been much discussion of the influence of the context on the phenomenon under study. Time and again, both phenomenographers and critics of phenomenography have stressed the importance of the researcher being mindful of the context when using phenomenography as a research methodology. In this paper, two phenomenographic studies of the learning of adults under the context of parental learning are reported. We attempt to illuminate empirically the consequences of ignoring the cautionary advice about context in the pilot study and contrast its outcomes with the quality of the research results of the subsequent main study that heeded the advice. It is important to clearly delimit the phenomenon in question by taking careful consideration of the relevant context, as this ensures that phenomenography is conducted on the same, target phenomenon, rather than on different phenomena.

At present, the issue of training highly qualified brainpower is one of priority issues while solving tasks related to forensic science reform aimed at its further development and improving the quality of forensic researches. Hon. Prof. M. S. Bokarius Kharkiv Research Institute of Forensic Examinations is one of the oldest state forensic science institutes in Ukraine having sufficient experience in staff training. However, the training of highly qualified scientific personnel directly in graduate school of the Institute was carried out only at the beginning of forensic science institutions functioning. Thus, on September 18, 1925, Sovnarkom of the Ukrainian SSR adopted a resolution "On graduate students under scientific and forensic science offices" that determined the training procedure for experts in forensic examination for needs of these offices from persons having a professional higher education. Duties for postgraduate students with a three-year training period were provided at the Kharkiv, Kiev and Odessa offices of scientific and forensic examination according to this resolution. During the Second World War the graduate school came to an end. The lack of own graduate school complicates the work performed for highly qualified specialists training that leads to development inhibition of scientific and forensic science potential in Ukraine. KhRIFE direction performs relevant activities in order to solve issues related to the training for highly qualified brainpower. So, on June 13, 2018, the Institute received a license permitting perform educational activities in the field of higher education at the third educational and scientific level (PhD training) according to the field of specialization: 081 "Law". All the necessary activities have been carried out at the Institute for creation the graduate school according to obtained license. Decent peopleware of state forensic science institutions will guarantee high quality of expert researches, new modern expert methods, development of forensic expert activities in Ukraine.
