The study has been able to ascertain and prove beyond doubt that Das’s prose works are of no less ranking than her poems and that she has effectively employed the short story form to present the predicaments of Indian womanhood and their quest for identity and self-assertion. The exhaustive evaluation and thorough scrutiny taking up various aspects of he stories right from her themes, structure and style, narrative techniques to her portrayal of Indian women, their status in society, and identity crisis have finally led to the emergence of the New Indian woman. Das’s feminist approach and overt outlook, along with the quest for a self-determined and self-affirmed identity for Indian women, have been well established through a methodical and exhaustive contemplation of the diverse women characters. The conclusion that emerges from this study undoubtedly corroborates and attests that Kamala Das’s name stands at par with the pioneer Indian woman short story writers. Das has efficiently and effectively used the short story genre as a document of social criticism and has established herself as a feminist crusader, campaigning to acquire for the Indian womanhood an independent identity and self-dignity. Das’s short story, with its innovative style and techniques, simple language, and concise form, has been brilliantly explored in discussing the problems facing Indian womanhood, especially her search for selfhood. Das has adeptly highlighted and presented her outlooks with the help of her characters. The fact that her English fictional work has remained obscure and un-honored is a sad story and a loss to literature.

Abstrak Kritik sosial sebagai sebuah ide atau berbagai bentuk gagasan yang bertolak belakang dengan kenyataan yang tidak sesuai dengan tujuan dan harapan dari tatanan dalam masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan membahas aspek sosial yang meliputi struktur cerita, masalah sosial dan kritik sosial bermuatan lokal Bali yang tercermin dalam kumpulan cerita pendek berbahasa Bali Nguntul Tanah Nulengék Langit karya I Made Suarsa. Metode analisis yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dan teknik interpretatif. Dalam pengolahan data dilakukan tahapan klasifikasi, pendeskripsian, penerjemahan, dan penganalisisan data. Untuk mengetahui masalah sosial dan kritik sosial dalam cerpen tersebut, digunakan teori sosiologi sastra dan teori struktural untuk mengetahui struktur formal yang membangun cerita tersebut. Hasil dan pembahasan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kritik sosial yang dapat terhimpun dalam cerita tersebut adalah kritik sosial terhadap kemiskinan, kritik sosial disorganisasi keluarga dan kritik terhadap adat dan tradisi serta serta kehidupan sosial masyarakat Bali. Dengan demikian, lahirnya cerpen karya I Made Suarsa ini memperlihatkan kemegahan pariwisata, masih terdapat ketimpangan sosial dalam masyarakat Bali. Kata kunci: cerpen, kritik sosial, masalah sosial, muatan lokal Bali Abstract Social criticism as an idea or various forms of ideas that are contrary to reality is not in accordance with the goals and expectations of the order in society. This study aims to discuss the social aspects which include story structure, social issues and social criticism with local Balinese content as re ected in a collection of short stories in Balinese language “Nguntul Tanah Nulengék Langit” by I Made Suarsa. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative and note taking techniques. In data processing, the stages of classi cation, description, translation and data analysis are carried out. To nd out the social problems and social criticism in the short story, the sociology approach of Sapardi Djoko Damono’s view is used and is assisted by a structural approach to determine the formal structure that builds the story. The results of the study show that the social criticisms that can be collected in the story are social criticism of poverty, social criticism of family disorganization and criticism of customs and traditions as well as the social life of Balinese people who seem famous by tourism, but in fact there are still social inequalities in Balinese society. This article brings a reading of the short-story collection Monção [Monsoon] ( 2003) by the Goan writer Vimala Devi (1932-). The collection can be read as a short-story cycle, a group of stories related by locality, Goa, character, Goans, from all walks of life, and theme, in particular women´s milieu, among other literary categories. In her book, written from her self-imposed exile in Portugal, Devi recreates Goa, former Portuguese colony, in the 1950s, before its annexation to India. A member of the Catholic gentry, Devi portrays the four hundred years of conflictive intimacy between Catholics and Hindus. Our main argument is that Devi´s empathy for her culture becomes even more explicit in Monção when her voice becomes one with that of all her women characters. Though they might be at odds, due to differences of caste, class and religion, Devi makes a point of showing that they are all part of the same cultural identity constantly remade through their own acts of refusal and recognition. This discussion will be framed in terms of Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson’s theory of autobiography (2001) as well as the studies on Goan women by the Goan critics Propércia Correia Afonso (1928-1931), Maria Aurora Couto (2005) and Fátima da Silva Gracias (2007).

The oeuvre of Susana Wein, Mexican writer of Hungarian origins often represents the controversial quest for identity carried out by immigrants and their descendants. The author proposes to examine these dilemmas of identity in Wein's collection of short stories En tiempo mexicano... cuentos húngaros (1985) and her novel titled La abuela me encargó a sus muertos (2005), both written in Spanish. The characters of Wein's prose enable the reader to follow the evolution and change of the problematics of identity from one generation to the next. For example, while the female protagonist of the short story Draga Rocza is proud of her Hungarian identity and is determined to preserve it, the heroine of Una historia de amor has ambitions of quick assimilation, motivated by social and individual interests. The narrator figure of the short story El día en que renuncié a mi nacionalidad presents the dilemma of second-generation immigrants born into a different culture. The author argues that the characters of Wein's novel undergo the same identity crisis: the grandmother's homesickness never seems to cease, the grandchild wants to return to her roots, and Uncle Isidor symbolizes the importance of remembering. Thus, Wein's prose offers a fusion of history and literature, filling the dry historical facts with life through her characters.

<p>Eka Kurniawan's Corat-coret di Toilet short stories compilation book contains twelve short stories that tell about light stories everyday but full of social criticism. Some of the short stories that portrayed female characters presented women who were not free in their lives, one of which was titled Dongeng Sebelum Bercinta and Si Cantik yang Tak Boleh Keluar Malam. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the position of women and their resistance toward patriarchal domination. This is interesting to be studied further by using feminist theory to find the position of women in literary works written by male writers. This research will focus on the actions of female characters which shape their position in the story. The data used in this study are in the form of words, sentences or expressions from short stories that show the dominance of patriarchy towards women and their efforts to get out of domination. From research using feminist theory it was found that patriarchal domination arises in the closest male characters to female characters such as fathers, male friends and husbands. Women resistance in the story was a form of false resistance which in turn strengthened the dominance of patriarchy and the dichotomy between men and women. This was found based on the fact that every resistance made by women turned to weaken women themselves.</p><p> <em> </em></p>

Identity crisis is one of the most dominating thematic concerns in the novels of Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai. Sucked into the vortex of ascribed and achieved identities, the characters portrayed by these two authors struggle to create their personal identity and individuality. Roy has dwelt on the idea of identity on several platforms, be it on the page or stage. She has an in-depth understanding of individual and collective identities. On the other hand, Desai focuses on multiculturalism and dislocation in families that pose athreat to one’s social, civic and cultural identity. Her works offer some fresh insights into diaspora identity. This paper critically examines identity crisis suffered by the women protagonists in the novels of Roy andDesai within the comparative literature study framework by focusing on the method of thematology. Roy mulls over the significance of women in families and society. There is no dispute regarding their inevitable role, but their status is definitely a matter of debate. In her debut novel, Roy speaks freely about the concerns of women, but the issue of identity crisis outdoes in her second novel due to the polyphonic sounds of her women characters. Desai, to the contrary, presents an idealistic picture of Indian women. This paper delineates that Roy and Desai unearths various dimensions of womanhood in general and wifehood in particular. Both Roy and Desai deal with the issue of identity against the socio-cultural backdrop of India. They depict a panoramic view of identity crisis faced by women.

Bharati Mukherjee is a famous Indian born American non-fiction writer, short story writer and journalist. She is one of the well-known novelists of Indian Diaspora. Within a really short creative time, she has achieved enviable position in the field of English literature. In her works, she has very well depicted the Indian immigrant experience of her women characters both in her novels and short stories. In her works, she talks about the lives of Indian women immigrants in the U.S.A and their journey of transformation and adjustment of their lives and personalities. She tries to explore the themes of immigration as well as transformation. She portrays the various phases of her characters such as the phase of expatriation, the phase of transition and phase of immigration. She very well depicts how the cultural clash or cultural conflict between the west and the east leads to the psychological crisis in the minds of her women characters. In her novels, she has given importance to the feministic perspective of her women characters. Her women characters are the protagonist and hero of the novels. She has tried to portray how her female characters sacrifice their dreams, hopes, desires, wishes, what the various problems, fear, torture they face, and how they finally do their best to overcome from all the hurdles. She has drawn her female characters in various situations and circumstances.

Crime writings can be said to have originated in Bengal in the last decades of the 19th century with the emergence of narratives of seemingly true criminal investigations compiled by real-life darogas like Girish Chandra Bose, Priyanath Mukhopadhyay, and Bakaullah. These non-canonical accounts though rendered in simplistic narrative techniques to report cases that may appear inconsequential to present-day readership not only set the field for more complex fictional works of criminal investigation but also laid the foundations of a new genre of vernacular popular fiction favoured till date. It can be mentioned here that the criminal investigation accounts of Priyanath Mukhopadhyay were serialised as Daroga Daptor for a significant span of a decade which owing to its elements of thrill, mystery, and instruction were immensely coveted by the readers. The significance of the Daroga Daptor narratives for the purpose of the paper however lies in its reflections of the contemporary socio-legal setup comprised of responses towards sexual mores, socio-ethical strictures, and gender positions. In this context, the objective of the paper is to analyse select narratives of Daroga Daptor with females as victims or accused, namely the novel Adarini and the short story “Promoda”. Initiating the process with an overview of the office of the daroga emphasising on the popular associations of daroga with sloth and corruption, the paper will note the manner in which Daroga Daptor marked a paradigm shift in the popular imagination with regards to the intellectual abilities and sensibilities of daroga. Proceeding with the analysis of the aforesaid narratives, the paper by emphasising the 19th-century gender roles with respect to hypermasculine bhadralok norms and tenets of colonial law will situate the women characters as existing in an ambiguous position within the colluding grounds of the two apparently opposite masculine factions. The paper thus will establish the 19th-century native female body as a passive pliable vessel for various ideological experimentations reading them as perpetually incarcerated within the dynamic limits of an efficient, promptly adaptive, and multifariously hegemonic masculine order.

The focus of this research actually lies on the descriptive qualitative research model with a socialfeminist approach. By using the object collection of Parodia short stories written by Istifari Hasan, researcherstried to show the forms of feminism contained therein. From sources that have been collected in parallel,researchers found that there are feminism forms contained in a collection of Parodia short stories by IstifariHasan that are full of social values in real community life in socializing, especially for women. In this case,researchers also aim to cultivate the analysis of short stories in the area of Indonesian literature. With theshort story analysis that carries the theme of feminism, it is hoped that readers or literary connoisseurs can getcloser to understanding the meaning or message of the author. After the researcher found a form of feminismin a collection of Parodia short stories written by Istifari Hasan, the researcher tried to look back at the realitythat occurred in the life of the surrounding community which was not much different from the eventscontained in literary works, especially short stories which are indeed often the object of social criticism forwriters.

Penelitian ini berisi tentang kritik sosial dalam kumpulan cerita pendek berjudul  “Konvensi” karya A. Mustofa Bisri. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dengan teori-teori sosial dari Soerjono Soekanto dan Budi Sulistyowati. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara pengambilan dari dokumen dan catatan-catatan. Klasifikasi data dilakukan dengan mengkategorikan data-data yang ditemukan berdasarkan jenis-jenis permasalahan sosial masyarakat yang ditemukan. Analisis data dilakukan dengan tahap cara analisis isi dokumen. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam kumpulan cerpen “Konvensi” karya A. Mustofa Bisri telah ditemukan 9 macam jenis permasalahan sosial dengan 12 subbab permasalahan. Masing-masing subbab merupakan cerminan dari kondisi permasalahan sosial yang tengah dialami masyarakat pada saat karya itu ditulis. Kata kunci: kritik sosial, cerita pendek.   This research studies contains social criticism in a collection of short stories titled "Konvensi" by A. Mustofa Bisri. This research is descriptive qualitative with social theories from Soerjono Soekanto and Budi Sulistyowati. Data collection is carried out by means of retrieval from documents and records. Data classification is done by categorizing the data found based on the types of social problems that are found. Data analysis was carried out with the stage of how to document the contents of the document. The results of this study indicate that in the collection of short stories "Konvensi" by A. Mustofa Bisri have found 9 types of social problems with 12 sections of problems. Each section is a reflection of the conditions of social problems that were being experienced by the community at the time the work was written. Keywords: social criticism, short stories.

This research entitled “Social Criticism in Aud Kelor Short Story Collection by Carma Citrawati Analysis of Literary Sociology”. There are three short stories that were studied, namely the short stories entitled Wayan Kelor, Siaappp Presiden, and Keneh Pasih. The three short stories were analyzed by structural theory from Nurgiyantoro and sosiology of literature from Wellek and Warren. This research aims to describe the narative structure, the author’s background, and social criticism contained in the three short stories. Methods and techniques used in this study was divided into three stages. The stages of methods and data collection techniques used two methods, namely the simak and record technique. The stages of methods and data analysis techniques using qualitative methods supported by analytic descriptive techniques. Methods and techniques for presenting the results of data analysis using informal methods are supported by inductive techniques and deductive techniques. The result from this research is structure narative from the three short stories, namely: incidents, plot, characters and characterizations, settings, themes, and moral value of the stories. The second research result is an explanation of the author's biography. The third research result is social criticism contained in the three short stories, namely: injustice in law, education, politic, and socio-cultural. The author conveys the social criticism through characters and themes. This social criticism is conveyed specifically to readers and in general to society and the government. The author aims to make readers aware to open their mindset to their surroundings.
