Indian Small Cardamom is famous in the world over decades for its’ quality, colour and standards. However, India imports Cardamom from other countries for various reasons such as high price in the domestic market, bulk seasonal and festival demand for Cardamom from North India. Countries like Guatemala with a wide area of plantations with naturally conducive weather and climate paves the way for mass production of Cardamom at a lower cost. This has resulted in the mixing of those lesser quality cardamoms with higher quality Cardamom produce in India. Moreover, there are many illegal routes with which Guatemala Cardamom is smuggled into India. Export of Cardamom has several formalities and procedures to be followed. The State and Central Government have regulated the import and export of cardamom to various countries in the world. There are several distributing channels of Cardamom with auction centres, wholesaler, retailer and other intermediaries through which the Cardamom reaches the customers in India and abroad. The international market for Indian Cardamom is competitive as more countries try to dump their product. But there is ample scope for Indian Cardamom to rule in the Global Market.

In a dramatic example of policy diffusion, the past three decades have witnessed the spread of automobile emission standards throughout the world. Contrary to fears that global competition would produce a race to the bottom, there appears to be a race to the top, not only among rich countries but also among poor ones. Using econometric analysis of the adoption of automobile emission standards over the past twenty years for 129 countries, the author argues that this global diffusion results from countries' efforts to stay competitive in the international market. Due to the pressure from importing countries that have adopted stringent emission standards, even developing countries have rapidly moved to adopt rich country standards. The evidence shows that adoption of automobile emission standards correlates with an increase in the total value of automobile exports. Under some conditions, economic incentives in a global market can be a complement to environmental protection.

Financial crisis has always been a concern for all the countries in the world. The balance of payment crisis has significantly affected India in 1991, which was the worst situation India has ever faced. The crisis has started originating from the fiscal year 1979-80 onwards and continued rising in current account deficit, imports of oil, increased in the growth of imports of goods, decreased in exports, breaking of Soviet-bloc and fiscal indiscipline, all these headed to 1991 balance of payment crisis. However, again in 2012-2013, India’s current account deficit grasped to the lowest point as oil and gold imports were ascended. Furthermore, the increase in imports of non-oil goods caused an increase in the current account deficit, which was the highest after the 1991 crisis. Since the situations of 1991 and 2012, India reformed many policies to prevent this financial crisis in future and make stronghold in the global market. Therefore, the sustainability of cardamom comparative advantage needs to be improved.
