Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate and comment on the factors used by Australian students to select their bank and the products and services they utilise, based on responses to an online questionnaire. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative methods, was used to investigate this research issue. Convenience sampling resulted in 276 completed online responses. Mean ranking and factor analysis methods were employed to identify the key factors used in selecting a bank and frequency analysis used to examine the products and services utilised by students. Findings The key factors used by students to select a bank in Australia were bank competence, recommendations and outside influences, bank costs, returns and services, and finally location. The main bank products and services used by students were automated teller machines (ATMs), savings accounts, internet and telephone banking, and debit cards. Research limitations/implications The use of an online survey which limits the pool of respondents to internet users and, the sample size limits generalisability of the findings. Practical implications Banks can better target and understand the key determinants used by students in selecting a bank and the products and services this group values. This will allow Australian banks to develop programs to better attract and retain student customers. Originality/value Provides insight to and understanding of the determinants used by students to select their bank and the products and services they utilise. Furthermore, this study fills a gap in the literature by focusing on the banking behaviour of Australian students, an important segment of bank customers previously under-researched.

Abstract

The ASEAN Economic Community was formed with the aim of achieving the perfection of economic integration in the ASEAN region which is believed to provide tangible benefits to all elements of society. Opportunities of digital economy and the pollination of each ASEAN country is very important to succeed the purpose of the establishment of The ASEAN Economic Community. This study uses quantitative methods with secondary data by panel period 2012-2016 by combining 10 ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia). T test results obtained are the effect of digital variables on the GDP of ASEAN countries ie the probability value of t-statistics obtained 0.0420. Then the statistical probability <α = 5% is 0.0420 <0.05. So it can be concluded that digital variables partially have a positive significance to GDP variables. While the influence of openness to GDP growth of ASEAN countries is the probability value of t-statistics obtained 0.6386, then the statistical probability <α = 5% is 0.6386> 0.005. So it can be concluded that the variables of disclosure partially no effect on the significance of GDP variables. While the simultaneous F test result is the effect of digital variables and openness to GDP growth of ASEAN countries obtained Adjustted R-Squere value of 0.994. This shows that the model is able to explain 99.4% of the dependent variable, while the remaining 0.52 other factors influenced beyond the regression model. Digital influence on GDP growth of ASEAN countries is good so it needs to be improved to manage internet users. Internet users are expected not only as a consumer but also create business opportunities to make a star up (entrepreneur) for economic growth in each country can be improved. While the influence of openness to the growth of GDP of ASEAN countries needs to be improved especially in producing products that can be exported and reduce the import of goods, export and import tariff are also to be re-arranged so that grow export climate in each country. It is expected that openness will increase so much investment will be present so that ultimately the purpose of establishment of ASEAN Economic Community can prosper each ASEAN country.
Keywords: Digital Economy, Openness, GDP, ASEAN

AbstractThis article seeks to stimulate thought on the philosophy behind agricultural research. Pragmatism is identified as a philosophical basis for studying environmental issues that focus on human behavior. The ways in which this approach is applicable to the study of alternative agriculture are illuminated. “Behavioral pragmatists” differ from “behavioral positivists” in their aim, focus, process, and approach to research. I describe the main goals of the pragmatic behavioral approach: accepting a systems approach to study the interrelationships between humans and the environment; gaining understanding through human experiences; viewing problems as whole complex “problematic situations”; and promoting social activism and appropriate policy formulation. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods is often most effective. Pragmatism allows for holistic analysis that incorporates numerous factors that influence human uses of the environment. A specific example shows how behavioral pragmatism is effective in research on alternative agriculture.

The current number of internet users in Indonesia has exceeded 50% of the total population, with an average expenditure of IDR 6.5 million per annum for online shopping. The value of e-commerce has reached US$ 87.8 or 52% of the e-commerce market in Southeast Asia. On the one hand, the development of digital lifestyle and digital technology-based industries has become a necessity, but on the other hand, it will become “a serious threat” for traditional and conventional businesses as a result of changes in consumer shopping characteristics, that is, fast, practical, and inexpensive. Millennial generation is very familiar with digital technology and becomes potential target to increase market share. This research is categorized as qualitative research with positive paradigm. This research uses primary data and secondary data with the focus on Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the behavior of consumers as internet (smartphone) users. The results show that there are still some problems with regulation, collaboration, and infrastructure that need to be addressed so as not to hamper the growth of the digital economy and the stability of the financial system in Indonesia.
