Using Homer Software for Cost Analysis of Stand-Alone Power Generation for Small Scale Industry in Nigeria: A Case Study Lumatec Aluminium Products

Nigeria is one of developing countries in the world that experience shortage of electricity for her economic and social development. In Nigeria, most of the small-scale industries use diesel/petrol-based systems to generate their electricity. However, due to the cost fluctuation of oil and gas fuel, an alternative power generation should be considered. This paper targets to examine the cost analysis of system for supplying electricity to LUMATEC Aluminium products shop in Mubi, Adamawa state Nigeria. Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER) is used as a tool for cost analysis. The scenario consider in this study was only stand-alone with battery system. Results revealed that the system have 10kW PV with cost of electricity (COE) of $0.312/kW. The initial capital cost and total net present cost (NPC) are $21.775 and $26.148 respectively, with payback period of 5.8years. In conclusion, this study provides the solution of power supply to the small-scale industries at cost effective and available throughout the year and it is feasible to solve the small-scale industries, rural and urban electricity supplying in this country (Nigeria). It is recommended that Nigerian Government & Law makers should promotes the use of standalone PV system for domestic and small-scale industry by providing financial assistance through soft loans, subsides and grants.

The cost of affordable rental units in Calgary is amongst the highest in Canada, despite a rental vacancy rate that is 3 percent higher than the national average (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, 2017). Nearly 1 in 5 Calgary households are struggling to pay for shelter costs and as of 2016, more than 42,000 households were spending more than 50 percent of their incomes on shelter, putting this population at a greater risk of becoming homeless due to job loss or from some other unexpected financial hardship (City of Calgary, 2017). Counter to popular belief, economically depressed communities with weak rental and housing markets such as Calgary following the 2015 collapse of the oil and gas sector can be subject to a critical lack of affordable housing. A soft housing market cannot make up for an insufficient range of affordable and non-market housing options. In other cities facing similar challenges, especially those in the United States, the formation of Community Land Trusts has proven to be a viable solution for providing both affordable rental and affordable ownership opportunities for residents who are struggling to afford the cost of housing in their area. This paper explores whether the Community Land Trust model is an appropriate tool to augment Calgary’s limited supply of affordable housing and will end with five recommendations to encourage the adoption of the Community Land Trust model in Calgary. To evaluate CO2 emission mitigation potential and cost effectiveness of rice husk utilization, Life Cycle Analysis was conducted for 9 scenarios. The results showed that, gasification is the most efficient CO2 mitigation. From cost analysis, the cost mitigation can be achieved by replacing the current fossil fuels in cooking scenarios. Among the power generation scenarios, it was found that 30MW combustion and 5MW gasification power generations were the most economically-efficient scenarios. The briquette combustion power generation appeared less cost-competitive than direct combustion, whilst the large-scale gasification scenarios and the pyrolysis scenarios give the increase in cost from the baseline. From the viewpoints of both CO2 and cost, it was indicated that the win-win scenarios can be the rice husk use for cooking, for large-scale combustion power generation, and for small-scale gasification. Để đánh giá tiềm năng giảm thiểu phát thải CO2 và hiệu quả chi phí của việc sử dụng trấu, phương pháp đánh giá vòng đời sản phẩm đã được thực hiện cho 9 kịch bản. Kết quả cho thấy, khí hóa trấu để sản xuất điện có tiềm năng giảm phát sinh khí CO2 nhiều nhất. Kết quả phân tích chi phí cho thấy việc giảm thiểu chi phí có thể đạt được khi thay thế sử dụng nhiên liệu hóa thạch trong kịch bản dùng trấu cho nấu ăn. Giữa các kịch bản về sản xuất điện, hiệu quả kinh tế cao nhất trong trường hợp đốt trực tiếp trấu để sản xuất điện ở quy mô công xuất lớn (30MW) và khí hóa ở quy mô trung bình (5MW). Trường hợp dùng củi trấu không mang lại hiệu quả kinh tế so với dùng trực tiếp trấu để phát điện. Hai trường hợp dùng trấu để sản xuất dầu sinh học và khí hóa gas công suất lớn (30MW) cho thấy chi phí tăng cao so với điều kiện biên. Kịch bản cho kết quả khả thi về hiệu quả kinh tế và giảm phát thải CO2 là dùng trấu để nấu ăn, đốt trực tiếp để phát điện công suất lớn và khí hóa công suất trung bình.

In Italy in 2020, only 15.5% of school building heritage was retrofitted from an energy and environmental point of view. In this paper, the cost-optimal method was applied to two different school buildings belonging to the same Italian cold climate zone but characterized by different structural and technological solutions. The research aims at defining the cost-effective redevelopment solution among several ones proposed to apply to this building type. At the same time, this paper provides a critical analysis of the methodology applied, highlighting deficiencies related to a not proper evaluation of environmentally friendly retrofitting measures. In a cost-effective context, the main results show that the intervention on the heating system is more convenient than the retrofitting of the envelope. The energy saving is equal to about 35% for both considered schools. Among the different proposed requalification configurations, the adoption of PV (photovoltaic) electric generation is included. In this regard, an optimization procedure was implemented in a generative design environment to maximize energy production with reference to different design parameters. As a result, a solution with south oriented PV modules with a tilt angle of 42° and arranged in 0.7 m spaced rows proved to be the most effective.

This chapter consists of two sections, ‘Analysis of a Fuel Cell Microgrid with a Small-Scale Wind Turbine Generator’ and ‘Power Characteristics of a Fuel Cell Microgrid with Wind Power Generation.’ An independent microgrid is expected to be effective in cutting greenhouse gas discharge and energy costs. Therefore, the operating conditions of an independent microgrid that supplies power with renewable power sources and fuel cells are investigated in the 1st section. In the 2nd section, the dynamic characteristics of fuel cell microgrid are investigated in numerical analysis, and the cost of fuel consumption and efficiency is also calculated. In addition, the stabilization time of the microgrid and its dynamic characteristics accompanied by wind-power-generation and fluctuation of the power load are clarified.

In this study, exergy and economic analysis were conducted to gain insight on small-scale movable LNG liquefaction considering leakage. Optimization and comparison were performed to demonstrate the quantitative results of single mixed refrigerant, dual nitrogen expansion, and the propane pre-cooling self-refrigeration processes. For the optimization, exergy efficiency was used as the objective function; the results showed that exergy efficiencies are 38.85%, 19.96%, and 13.65%, for single mixed refrigerant, dual nitrogen expansion, and propane pre-cooling self-refrigeration, respectively. Further, the cost analysis showed that the product cost of each process is 4002.3 USD/tpa, 5490.2 USD/tpa, and 9608.5 USD/tpa. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine parameters that affect exergy and cost. The SMR process is the most competitive in terms of exergy efficiency, product cost, and operability, without considering makeup facilities.

Objectives of the study are: (1) to estimate the influence of input value and labor expenditure on the output of micro and small industries in Indonesia, (2) to analyze the form of translog production function that is compatible with micro and small industries in Indonesia. The analytical method used is descriptive method and analysis of translog production functions with scenarios: linear translog function, complete second-order or quadratic linear translog function, and linear translog function with interaction. Results showed that (1) the function of linear translog production with interaction was more suitable used to estimate the production output of micro and small industries in Indonesia, (2) input value and labor expenditure had a positive and significant effect on output values, (3) micro-industry enterprises more emphasis on the allocation of larger workforce, while small-scale industry emphasizes greater allocation of input value, (4) the allocation of input value and labor expenditure are more efficient in micro-industries compared to small-scale industries.

Abstract Background: Cyclophosphamide plus G-CSF (C+G-CSF) is the most widely used stem cell (SC) mobilization regimen in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Plerixafor plus G-CSF (P+G-CSF) has demonstrated superior SC mobilization efficacy when compared to G-CSF alone in phase II and III studies and has been shown to rescue patients who fail mobilization with G-CSF with or without cyclophosphamide. Despite the proven efficacy of P+G-CSF in upfront SC mobilization, its use for this indication has been limited, mostly due to concerns of high cost of the drug. Investigators have proposed "on demand" use of plerixafor in patients identified to have inadequate SC mobilization with G-CSF with or without cyclophosphamide, with the assumption that such an approach promotes cost containment by limiting plerixafor use. However, a comprehensive comparison of the cost effectiveness of SC mobilization using C+G-CSF versus P+G-CSF has not been performed. The goal of this retrospective study was to conduct a cost analysis between these two approaches. Methods: Using the pharmacy database, we identified all MM patients treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center between 11/2008 and 6/2012 who received C+G-CSF or P+G-CSF for upfront SC mobilization. Patients collecting <5 x 106 CD34+ cells/kg were considered mobilization failures and had a second attempt at SC mobilization using an alternative approach. For salvage mobilization, patients received P+G-CSF after failing C+G-CSF-based mobilization or were re-mobilized with C+G-CSF along with plerixafor after failing upfront P+G-CSF mobilization. Mobilization costs included in the analysis were those associated with upfront mobilization, those associated with salvage mobilization in patients failing an initial mobilization, and those associated with complications directly related to the mobilization procedures. Cost calculations included the following: cost of cyclophosphamide 3000 mg/m2, plerixafor 0.24 mg/kg, and G-CSF 10 mcg/kg and their administration prior to and during pheresis sessions; pheresis sessions; laboratory tests on pheresis days; re-hospitalization occurring within 15 days of either mobilization approach and considered directly related to the mobilization procedure. All costs were calculated using the institution’s ratio of cost to charges, and were normalized and adjusted based on institutional charges and costs for 2012. Results: A total of 223 patients undergoing upfront mobilization were identified, with 111 patients receiving C+G-CSF, and 112 patients receiving P+G-CSF. Thirteen patients (12%) were re-hospitalized due to C+G-CSF-related complications, with an average hospital stay of 6.5 days. No patients in the P+G-CSF arm were hospitalized. Nineteen patients (17%) in the C+G-CSF group failed first mobilization and received P+G-CSF as salvage regimen, with four (3.6%) failing salvage collection and ultimately deemed collection failures. Seven patients (6.2%) in the P+G-CSF group failed upfront mobilization and received C+G-CSF along with plerixafor as salvage regimen, with two (1.8%) subsequently failing salvage mobilization. The average number of pheresis sessions performed was 3.29 and 2.42 in the C+G-CSF and P+G-CSF upfront groups, respectively (p=0.373). In total, the average cost of stem cell collection per patient was 1.3 times greater in the C+G-CSF group than in the P+GCSF upfront group (p=0.017). When the costs associated with salvage pheresis are discounted for the 19 patients in the C+G-CSF upfront group who failed first SC mobilization, assuming that these patients could have been salvaged by plerixafor-on-demand, the cost per patient in the C+G-CSF group remains 1.26 times greater (p=0.019) than that of the P+G-CSF group. Conclusion: The use of P+G-CSF upfront for SC mobilization is more cost effective than the more widely used approach employing C+G-CSF. This difference is likely due to several factors including: 1) higher rate of hospitalization in the C+G-CSF group due to expected complications such as febrile neutropenia and catheter-related infections; 2) higher rate of mobilization failure leading to increased need for salvage mobilization in the C+G-CSF group; 3) reduced G-CSF use in the upfront P+G-CSF group. Overall, this single institution study provides additional rationale for the standard use of P+G-CSF as upfront mobilization regimen in MM patients.
