Objectives: There are few studies, which identify the support received by high school students in the decision making process for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The objective of the present study is to know the narratives of the students according to their interactions within their social and school environment, understanding the individual interest of the student in terms of mastery, tastes, participation, curiosity and attachment to the areas. Methodology: A focus group session was held with students of the mathematics career. From three trigger questions that assessed a total of 10 dimensions in the group, which allowed adjusting and enriching the theoretical structure through the synthetic analytical method to discover relationships and general characteristics. Contribution: The areas of interaction between friends within social roles and tutoring by teachers in the school context, are activities that strengthened decision making for people who participated in the focus group. Specific dimensions are defined for the intervention for the benefit of social inclusion in disadvantaged communities within the disciplines C.T.I.M. should be taken into account, especially by specialists in these areas.

Students drop out of schools for many reasons, and it has negative effects on the individual and society. This paper reports a study using data published in 2015 from the Educational Longitudinal Study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics to analyze the influence of parental involvement on low-achieving U.S. students’ graduation rates from high school. Findings indicate that both students and parents share the same perspective on the need for parental involvement in their academic progress. For low-achieving high school students, parental involvement in academic work is a positive factor influencing students’ graduation from high school.

It is of fundamental importance that Brazilian school institutions are concerned with financial education in people's daily lives, since this is indispensable in everyday decision-making, both school and family, because much of what is learned in the school context, is practiced at home. In this sense, the basic question raised for this work is: how to propose a financial education that favors discussions about the family budget of high school students in Brazilian schools? One of the aspects that needs to be pointed out is the problem related to the quality of students' decision-making, with regard to financial education, whether in the formal or non-formal context of teaching. The current situation points to a very significant number of people who have financial defaults, failing to meet their monetary commitments. Thus, in order to maximize studies on this theme, the work sought to collect information and trends on this theme on the national scene, through a bibliographic article, focusing on academic productions related to financial education and aimed at high school. The aim of this study was to show the importance of working on this topic with high school students, the habit since adolescence of having a healthy financial life, which later in adulthood will be put with more practice and experience.

Background Psychosocial problems are common during adolescence and can have long-lasting effects on health and on academic and social functioning. YouthCHAT, an electronic HEEADSSS (home, education, eating, activities, drugs and alcohol, suicide and depression, sexuality and safety)-aligned instrument, has recently been demonstrated to be an acceptable and effective school-based psychosocial screener for 13-year-old (Year 9) high school students. Objective This study aims to compare acceptability and detection rates with repeated YouthCHAT screenings of high school students when they are 13 years old (Year 9) and 14 years old (Year 10). Methods We invited all Year-10 students to complete a YouthCHAT screening in 2018. Rates of positively identified issues were compared between the subset of students screened in both 2017 and 2018. Student acceptability toward YouthCHAT was investigated through focus group sessions. Onward clinical referral rates in 2018 were also investigated to explore the potential referral burden following screening. Data analysis for rates of positively identified issues were conducted with the McNemar test. Chi-square, Fisher exact test, and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to analyze the focus group data. Results Of 141 eligible Year-10 students, 114 (81%) completed a YouthCHAT screening during 2018, and 97 (85%) of them completed it for a second time. Apart from depression, which increased (P=.002), and perceived life stress, which decreased (P=.04), rates of identified issues were broadly similar between 13 and 14 years of age. Repeated screenings via YouthCHAT was acceptable to students and time-efficient (mean, 6 minutes and 32 seconds) but did not reduce the overall number of individuals with identified issues. Onward clinical referrals from positive screens were mostly managed by school-based health services without the need for external referrals. Conclusions Although further evaluation is needed, our results support the value of YouthCHAT as an acceptable and effective instrument with which to achieve routine identification of psychosocial issues and early intervention within a high school environment.

This paper describes and implements an innovative model for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) that enhances the decision making process of students considering a major or a career in STEM fields. The model can also be used as a decision making tool for educators interested in stressing the importance of STEM for career enhancement and for society as a whole. The model creates analogies and metaphors for various STEM topics using the contents of popular music videos. Theories of neuroscience, the interdisciplinary study of the nervous system, are used to describe and validate our decision making model. Concepts such as, embodied cognition, mirror neurons and the connection between emotion and cognition, are used to explain how the brain processes the information and multi-modal stimuli generated by our model. The model was implemented using the topic of automated decision processes in robotics and automation with a group of university and high school students and teachers. The impact of the model was evaluated using the National Science Foundation (NSF) frameworks for evaluating informal science projects. The results indicate that the model using symbolic transformation to teach STEM can have a significant impact on students' attitude towards STEM and the decision making process about their careers.
