Abstract Objective The primary objective of this study was to assess a change in the psychological states (stress, self-esteem, anxiety and depression), anthropometric measurements and physical/mental quality of life before and after diet in a sample of Lebanese subjects visiting a diet clinic. The secondary objectives included the evaluation of factors associated with body dissatisfaction, mental and physical quality of life (QOL) before the intervention of the diet program and the change in quality of life after this intervention among those participants. Methods This cross-sectional study, conducted between May and August 2018, enrolled 62 participants recruited from three diet clinics. The QOL was measured using the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) and the psychological states was measured using the following scales: The Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Results A significant reduction in body dissatisfaction, anxiety, waist, weight and body fat and a significant increase in the physical and mental quality of life was seen after diet compared to before it (p < 0.001 for all). No significant variation in perceived stress (p = 0.072), self-esteem (p = 0.885), and depression (p = 0.353) after diet were found. Higher BMI (β = 0.440) and higher anxiety (β = 0.132) were associated with higher body dissatisfaction scores, whereas higher self-esteem (β = − 0.818) was significantly associated with lower body dissatisfaction. Higher perceived stress (β = − 0.711), higher body dissatisfaction (β = − 0.480) and being a female (β = − 4.094) were associated with lower mental QOL. Higher Physical Activity Index was significantly associated with higher mental and physical QOL (β = 0.086 and β = 0.123 respectively). Conclusion The results indicate the effectiveness of diet programs in enhancing the quality of life, psychological and anthropometric measures.

Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease undergo various stages of therapeutic adaptation which involve lifestyle modifications, physical changes, and adjustment to renal replacement therapy. This process produces adaptive stress. Objective: To identify how resilience, health- related quality of life, and sociodemographic, clinical, and hemodialysis routine-related variables are related to perceived stress in patients with chronic kidney disease receiving hemodialysis for more than six months. Methods: This was a multicenter and cross-sectional study involving 144 patients from the Valencian Community (Spain). The assessment scales used for the study were the Perceived Stress Scale 10, the Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36, and the Connors–Davidson Resilience Scale. To identify variables with predictive power over Perceived Stress Scale 10 scores, multiple regression analyses were performed. Results: Employment status (p = 0.003), resilience (p < 0.001), and quality of life (p < 0.001) were shown to be significantly related to perceived stress. The regression models determined that health-related quality of life and resilience explained up to 27.1% of the variance of total PSS10 scores. Conclusions: Resilience was identified as one of the most important predictors of Perceived Stress Scale 10 scores. Thus, the development of interventions to promote resilience may have a positive impact on perceived stress in patients with chronic kidney disease.

AimsTo determine the prevalence and correlates of depression and quality of life and their relationship among primary caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in a psychiatry specialist hospital.MethodA total of 138 caregivers of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia attending the outpatient clinic of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro, Abeokuta were recruited. Sociodemographic questionnaire, Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-PLUS) (depressive module) and World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-Bref) were administered on the caregivers while Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was used to measure symptoms severity in the patients.ResultThe mean (±SD) age of respondents was 48.3 years (±14.7), 53.6% were females and 33.3% were without partners. The prevalence of depression among the caregivers who participated in the study was 13.8%. Female gender (χ2 = 5.68, df = 1, p = 0.02), hailing from a minority tribe (χ2 = 9.78 df = 1, p < 0.01), and Previous treatment for mental illness (χ2 = 8.24 df = 1, p < 0.01) were associated with depression. Female gender (ß = 1.35, OR = 3.86, p = 0.03), minority tribe (ß = 1.95, OR = 7.03, p < 0.01), and previous treatment for mental illness (ß = 3.19, OR = 24.21, p = 0.01) were independently predictive of depression in the caregivers.Independent predictors of lower quality of life (QOL) were: Parents/siblings relationship for social relationship domain (ß = −7.076, p = 0.037) and spending more than 35 hours per week for Environmental domain (ß = −5.622, p = 0.028).Finally, a significant correlation was also found between Depression and Psychological Domain of QOL (t = 3.048, p < 0.01) and Social Domain of QOL (t = 2.154, p = 0.03).ConclusionThis study shows that primary caregivers of patients with schizophrenia have high prevalence of depression and poor quality of life. There is need to pay attention to the psychological wellbeing and quality of life of caregivers who come in contact with psychiatric services, and not just the patients they accompany.

A non-randomized pretest—posttest design was used to evaluate changes in occupational performance, self-esteem, and quality of life among clients completing a substance abuse recovery program that included occupational therapy services addressing life skills. Seventy-five clients participated in intake and discharge assessment (4- to 6-month interval) that used the Occupational Performance History Interview (Version 2.0), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Quality of Life Rating scale. A limited number of follow-up interviews at 3 and 6 months were also conducted. Marked improvement with significant differences and large effect sizes were found between intake and discharge scores for all measures. Most clients scored in the range of moderate occupational dysfunction at discharge, when their highest performance level was seen. Follow-up data revealed that occupational performance declined at 3 months and improved again at 6 months. Change in occupational performance is clearly reflected in the recovery process, but recovery is challenged when clients leave the supportive halfway house environment.

Objective: Endometriosis is a condition that has a great impact on women’s life. One of the most important consequences of the disease is infertility that may exacerbate the psychological, relational and sexual consequences on patients. The aim of the present study was to examine quality of life, anxiety, sexual functioning and relationship satisfaction of women with endometriosis and infertility. Infertility is supposed to be associated with a worse clinical profile. Design and Method: Data were collected on 71 patients (39 women with endometriosis and 32 with endometriosis and infertility) aged between 20 and 50 (M=34.21, SD=8.38), recruited in the Gynecological and Obstetrics department of Policlinico Umberto I, Rome. Participants completed: a socio-demographic questionnaire, the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-Bref for quality of life, the McCoy Female Sexuality Questionnaire (MFS-Q) for sexual and relationship satisfaction, the Female Sexual Functioning Index (FSFI) for sexual functioning and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) for anxiety symptoms. Results: Women without infertility obtained worse scores: sexual functioning (F(1,69)=10.97 p<.01), sexual (F(1,69)=17.44 p<.001) and relationship satisfaction (F(1,69)=10.18 p<.001) and quality of life (F(1,69)=13.56 p<.001). Conclusions: Contrary to our hypothesis, endometriosis, with or without fertility impairment, has an impact on patients’ relationship, sexuality and quality of life. Therefore, infertility is not the main factor that explains a negative clinical profile. The present study suggests the importance of psychosexual counseling during medical treatment of the disease, and the need of involving partners in the assessment and in the health care decision making.

University study can be a life period of heightened psychological distress for many students. The development of new preventive and intervention programs to support well-being in university students is a fundamental challenge for mental health professionals. We designed an 8-week online mindfulness-based program (eMBP) combining a face-to-face approach, text, audio, video components, and support psychotherapy principles with a unique intensive reminder system using the Facebook Messenger and Slack applications in two separate runs (N = 692). We assessed the program’s effect on mindful experiencing, perceived stress, emotion regulation strategies, self-compassion, negative affect, and quality of life. The results of the presented pilot study confirmed that eMBP is a feasible and effective tool in university students’ mental health support. The students who completed the eMBP reported a reduction of perceived stress with a large effect size (pη2 = 0.42) as well as a decrease of negative affect experience frequency and intensity (pη2 = 0.31), an increase of being mindful in their life (Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire subscales:pη2 = 0.21, 0.27, 0.25, 0.28, 0.28), and a higher rate of self-compassion (pη2 = 0.28) with a medium effect size. A small effect size was found in the frequency of using a cognitive reappraisal strategy (pη2 = 0.073). One new result is the observation of an eMBP effect (pη2 = 0.27) on the decrease in attributed importance to the quality-of-life components replicated in two consecutive runs of the program. The study affirms that mindfulness-based interventions can be effectively delivered in an eHealth form to university students.
